fylham··on Why Are There No Empires in Age of Empires? (2019)
For those who aren’t aware, AOE2 is thriving today with a huge player base, fan base, ongoing development and large international tournaments (recent Red Bull Wololo tournament in London, for example). I play this game regularly with friends and love it.
fylham··on A better way to tie your gym shorts. (Or any drawstring) [video]
Bowline, truckee’s hitch (the better alternative to a truckers hitch), prussick come to mind
fylham··on Show HN: Turn voice messages to beautiful journals
How private is this?
fylham··on Ask HN: Why do you use Apple products?
Things are worth what people are willing to pay for them, generally.
fylham··on Sunlight and Vitamin D (2013)
Sure, it is vital, but he claims that lack of vitamin D underlies nearly all diseases of modernity, which isn’t well-established. Meanwhile he was making money selling vitamin D and not disclosing it, which makes his motivation seem suspect. It’s very easy for bias to obliterate the validity of research.
fylham··on Sunlight and Vitamin D (2013)
The author of this paper, Michael Holick, was a professor of mine and is highly controversial due to his industry conflicts of interest that he didn't disclose (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/18/business/vitamin-d-michae...) and his seemingly perverse testimony in child-abuse cases (https://www.propublica.org/article/michael-holick-ehlers-dan...). I regard his research with high suspicion.
fylham··on The Future of Mental Health Is Here with This AI App
Has there been any sort of validation that it helps? A comparison to human-based psychotherapy?
fylham··on Anger is eliminated with the disposal of a paper written because of provocation
Cool result! But does it replicate?
fylham··on Posting on X gets 26,000x more views than a blog
They didn’t address the possibility that some of those views on X come from bots. It depends on your goals, but I’d much rather have a post read closely by fewer humans who are really engaging with it, versus lots of fleeting engagement including from bots.
fylham··on Ask HN: How to stay up to date with advances in Alzheimer's research?
I just learned about undermind.ai which could be useful for this task!
fylham··on You Don't Feel Jet-Lagged When You Run a Fever (2016)
Click bait-y title, for a study about mice. I’m fundamentally skeptical about both click bait-y titles and studies about mice (and the inferences made about humans).
fylham··on Asimov, I. (1955): The radioactivity of the human body [pdf]
Huh! I went to Boston University school of Medicine, and somehow didn’t realize that Isaac Asimov used to teach there – cool!
fylham··on Asimov, I. (1955): The radioactivity of the human body [pdf]
Worked for me.
fylham··on H4ck1ng.google
I don’t understand what’s going on here.
fylham··on Ask HN: How do I acquire an overachiever personality like the typical HN user?
Two paths to the relaxed lifestyle: 1) only work about as much as needed and keep a low-key, relaxed lifestyle; 2) work crazy hard for 15-20 years and then if everything works out perfectly, slow down and keep a low-key, relaxed lifestyle. All of my life experience suggests that option two is often a trap that keeps one away from relaxation.

Also, sounds like you could benefit from an existential psychotherapist, if you could find one.

Kind of random movie suggestion, but this all makes me think of the lovely movie I Heart Huckabees.

fylham··on Ask HN: How do I acquire an overachiever personality like the typical HN user?
I agree with the above comment, you seem to be idealizing these mysterious others on the internet and assuming all are paragons of productivity. Meanwhile, this site is largely a locus of procrastination for me, as it is for many, many others, I suspect. My gentle suggestion: find peace with who you are and what you really value. Maybe through meditation, or through therapy?
fylham··on Is the Sun Conscious? (2021) [pdf]

fylham··on Is the Sun Conscious? (2021) [pdf]
The hard problem of consciousness wonders why we seem to have consciousness when we could instead be input/output automata. You could imagine such a ‘zombie’ with our same social, emotional, and intellectual behavior (even pretending to have inner experiences) that doesn’t actually have Qualia. The existence of consciousness is not clearly causal, which is part of the mystery of why we seem to have it.
fylham··on Golf, and other men's hobbies, drive an increase in ALS risk
I think it’s worth putting the scary-sounding 300% into context: the CDC says prevalence is 9/100,000. Even tripled, it is a very unlikely outcome for a given man. Which means I’m probably not going to give up woodworking over this (however I will redouble my existing efforts on dust collection).
fylham··on The day I canceled my Spotify subscription
I’ve felt similarly for many years, but remain trapped using Spotify due to a lack of decent alternatives. Tried Tidal, but it wasn’t really any better. Would love to hear what leavers migrate to.
fylham··on D1 receptors may be a more important target than D2 for antipsychotic drugs
I would even add “Based on studies in mice, D1 receptors might make for better targets than D2 receptors”
fylham··on D1 receptors may be a more important target than D2 for antipsychotic drugs
Well given how complex the brain is, and how young neuroscience is, it’s no surprise that we haven’t unlocked deep knowledge about why psychopharmacological agents work. But granted the above, it isn’t prudent to wait decades for the brain to be understood before we try to help people struggling with mental health. If we can demonstrate that something is reasonably safe and makes a decent difference in helping someone’s life, shouldn’t we offer it to them (even if we don’t know on a deep level how it works)?
