fwungy··on Why I recommended ECS instead of Kubernetes to my latest customer
ECS is hardly perfect, but I'd use it before EKS for a client who wasn't ready for that.

fwungy··on Reddit Laying Off About 90 Employees and Slowing Hiring Amid Restructuring
I've heard anecdotally from people I trust that social media is dying. Content is struggling for views and shares.

Reddit isn't completely social media, but if people aren't responding to SM like they were it will hurt Reddit. If you're an insider it's probably the best opportunity you're going to get to juke the stats and max your IPO. Only going to go down from here.

fwungy··on Over 70% of US household Covid spread started with a child
See here's one of my problems with the pro-hard response side: they often seem to be a solution seeking a problem.

If you only look at the first year of the `sweden-vs-nordic-covid` link it looks pretty bad for Sweden, but if you extend it out, Finland and Norway traded early reduced mortality for later increased mortality.

This suggests Covid is highly transmissible, and restrictive policies just shift mortality out a little bit, not reduce it. Sure it's great to save lives, but at what cost to society? You need to balance mental health, the needs of children for social and educational development, and the economy.

You can't stop the world because people who are old or very sick are dying, that's nature, we're all subject to the same rules. You always need to balance the societal harm potential against the benefit, and with Covid our leaders seem to have forgotten that in many places.

fwungy··on Universal basic income of nearly $2000/mo to be trialed in UK for the first time
Exactly. Government preferences should be given to people raising children, regardless of race, sexuality, or gender. Much of the social services network is about supporting children. If parents were given job preference over other identity categories it would be a) fair and b) protect children without creating social service costs.

Because they need to pay people to stay in Alaska, also becaues they have oil money.

I'm running a political party that will give everyone $2000/month at a minimum.

If another party promises more money we will beat it by 15%. We will always give the people more money than any other party.

If your argument is proven with statistics you're on weak ground.

- my statistics professor

What did she mean? That if the impact of a treatment is so difficult to discern that you're looking at some statistic to judge it the treatment probably is not effective.

The fact that Sweden doesn't stand out as a horror show relative to everyone else is indicative, as well as places with strict enforcement of lockdown rules. Nobody stands out

fwungy··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
Sure, but let's make sure we can feed and house everyone, and most importantly that oppressed populations in the US are not backstabbed with the needs of new immigrants taking precedent. It is not ethical to ask African Americans and others to wait more generations for justice.
fwungy··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
It's based on points, but certain groups like refugees and family of immigrants take high priority.

Compared to previous years. The 2022–2024 Immigration Levels Plan continues to build on the 2021–2023 Immigration Levels Plan with higher admissions targets to address pandemic related shortfalls. As outlined in the 2022–2024 Immigration Levels Plan, Canada aims to welcome from 360,000 to 445,000 new permanent residents in 2022, from 380,000 to 465,000 in 2023, and 390,000 to 475,000 in 2024. The 2022–2024 Immigration Levels Plan includes targets that build on the ambitious targets set in previous years. In 2022–23, it is anticipated that as border restrictions gradually ease and travel levels regain momentum, clients residing overseas will increasingly be able to land in Canada and be processed, which will support efforts to meet the objectives of the 2022–2024 Immigration Levels Plan. Furthermore, the Department’s efforts to reduce overall inventories of applications, including paper-based permanent resident inventories, as well as further digitization of services, will contribute to achieving the ambitious levels targets set out in the 2022–2024 Immigration Levels Plan. The Department will continue to monitor immigration levels and work with other federal departments and agencies to continue protecting the health and safety of Canadians as newcomers are welcomed to Canada.

Very interesting document.

Housing prices in Canada are ridiculously high now and locals cannot afford to get into the housing market in major cities.

Canada has started to ban outside investors from buying homes in certain areas[0].

Canada is also experiencing record high inflation[1].

Low skilled immigrants require major government assistance. The government will simply print money to handle their housing and services as needed. Trudeau is not popular, and most Canadians are not happy with the direction of the government, but if you're a poor immigrant it's an amazing deal if you can get there.

You cannot have a welfare state and a liberal immigration policy.

Sure, if you do nice things for poor people their lives improve, and so does society, not only because we are kinder, but also because their problems don't become problems for unrelated people.

But, if you do nice things for poor people as a government and open the door we have the objective truth that there are billions of poor people in the world who would love to be taken care of too. You will attract them and, like the Tragedy of the Commons, everyone will be poorer and less happy.

Before anyone says "this isn't the right topic" I must point out that the population of the US has doubled since the 1950's, but the infrastructure has not. The rise in population is immigration, not native. There is a cost of immigration that is borne by the local population outside of the government for immigration if the housing stock does not keep pace with population, and if immigration is used to attack prevailing wages. What happens is that housing costs increase and income goes down, i.e. the native population gets poorer.

fwungy··on Automatic emergency braking should become mandatory, feds say
The point is to gradually remove private automobiles from the transit system by incrementally nudging out their availability, either through expense or added bureaucratic hassle.

The WEF has discussed the need for this repeatedly: don't forget, you'll own nothing and be happy AND safe!

fwungy··on Ask HN: Is it just me or GPT-4's quality has significantly deteriorated lately?
I recently asked Bing chat to write a Rust function for me. It used to do that well.

This time it wrote the function. I could see it for a second, and then changed it to the message something like "I can't talk about this right now." I don't remember exactly, but the interesting thing was that it flashed an answer and then withdrew it.

Its Rust abilities seem to have deteriorated over the past couple weeks

Its a CV brag. It means you're a big shot if you're giving the keynote at a top conference. Most people never do that so it's a big deal.

It grants high credibility in the outside world which gets you invited to additional opportunities.

How many of <T> ethnicity are in the community?

What is the average level of commitment and capability of <T> in the overall community?

If that is low relative to the community distribution members of <T> may not feel comfortable seeking speaker slots simply because they understand their relative ranking and do not want to potentially disrespect the group or humiliate themselves.

This is completely normal behavior for all <T>. Even in large subgroup most people do not consider themselves worthy of speaking at top conferences.

fwungy··on Why I Left Rust
As someone learning the language on production code I must agree that the error handling of Rust is terrible. Exceptions have never been a struggle point for me with other languages, but Rust error handling has literally given me headaches.
fwungy··on Printing Money: The Absolute Privilege of U.S. Dollars
You can't print bitcoin. You can't print natural resources. You can't print manufacturing capabilities.

Trade will work on verifiable assets in the future. If Bircoin picks up even a small percentage of foreign exchange it will be worth orders of magnitude more than it is now. A block chain with international trust is a valuable invention.

Why do the Paris police carry military rifles?

Even in the US your kids are not likely to get shot unless they're involved with youth drug gangs, that's where most of the child gun deaths come from. In France they trade the mass shooting incidents in for truck or bomb attacks.

Internal destabilization by manipulating group fractures is a known specialty of US foreign policy.

China has valid reasons to be concerned about such methods given explicit admissions from the US government at the highest levels, that they are considered an enemy.

I'm in Thailand right now. The US is attempting to destabilize Thailand with the coming elections in order to break its strong ties to China, ties that are quite reasonable and rational given the cultural and economic ties between the countries. The Americans are seeking to get rid of the Thai monarchy, which the average Thai is not particularly interested in doing.

fwungy··on Ask HN: What did you do when a employer rejected a raise?
The executives don't either. They're all passing through on their way to bigger and better gigs. If they can get more out of the employees for less money it just makes them look better. They don't care if they burn down the team long term because they'll be somewhere else.
fwungy··on How to quit cars
