funkaster··on Launch HN: H3X (YC W21) – High power density electric aircraft motors
this is super interesting! are you planning on working with an experimental manufacturer? would love to see this running on an Sling TSi or RV-10 similar GA airplane.

funkaster··on New report on Apple’s VR headset: 8K in each eye, potential $3k price tag
If anything, what I’m mostly looking forward here is mac support for VR. If I was able to use current Quest 2 with link to a mac, that would make me very happy.
funkaster··on A network analysis on cloud gaming: Stadia, GeForce Now and PSNow
I’ve been playing Watchdogs: Legion on geforce now for over a month and I’m extremely happy with it. I play from my ipad with a wireless xbox one controller. Quality is really good and I only see some stutters very rarely. I’ve played other games with the same experience. I would love to see SFV but I imagine the lag might make it a bad experience. all the games I tried were single player first/3rd person view and lag was not noticeable, I’m assuming there’s a lot of input prediction happening, but even in menus things were instantaneous.
funkaster··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
I’m building a privacy-first app data (configuration) and feature flagging service. supporting user segmentation and % rollout without storing persona le identifiable data and a super simple api.

The app configuration/feature flags are expected to be kept in yaml/json files that you pass to the api, so you’re in full control and can check them in your VCS, accept pull requests and keep the same dev flow for configuration changes.

funkaster··on FPGA dev board that's cheap, simple and supported by OSS toolchain
if you're more comfortable with the CLI, you should take a look at the apio project (https://github.com/FPGAwars/apio). It neatly bundles all the required tools. Regarding HDLs, I'm still learning so can't offer any good advice on that.
funkaster··on FPGA dev board that's cheap, simple and supported by OSS toolchain
yes. Even one of the examples is a RISC-V core. However, your expectation should be around a RISC core that can be used as a microcontroller rather than a RISC CPU for running linux.
funkaster··on FPGA dev board that's cheap, simple and supported by OSS toolchain
I was looking for a cheap (< $30) board to start playing with FPGAs and found this one. It's a good improvement over the v2 that had some signal issues[0]. The examples also include a RISC-V core.

funkaster··on Simple Bank Is Closing
I'm also moving to Schwab mostly because my previous and current employer have stocks linked to that platform. TBH seems good enough for my use case (long term investing, mostly ETF)
funkaster··on Emacs Symbolic Integration
thanks for the reference! love the final acknowledgement in there:

> Final thanks go to Richard Stallman, without whose fine implementations of the Emacs editor, language, and environment, Calc would have been finished in two weeks.

:D

funkaster··on Show HN: Ctrl-Pedal, a one-key keyboard for typing 'Ctrl'
oh, I wanted to have a way to keep the feather board attached to the pedal. And 3D printing a base sounded like a good approach.
funkaster··on Show HN: Ctrl-Pedal, a one-key keyboard for typing 'Ctrl'
A few weeks ago, over the Thanksgiving break I made this quick hack to aid with the ergonomics when programming in my iPad (my mobile setup is an iPad pro with Blink Shell and an AMD PC that I mosh into). My default keyboard layout is programmer dvorak with caps lock mapped to ctrl key. I can't get that on the iPad, but I can map the keyboard to Dvorak layout (close enough). However, mapping caps lock to ctrl is really flaky and some times works, some times it doesn't (IIRC Apple broke it a few releases ago). Tired and starting to develop a pain in the wrist, I decided to quickly hack a pedal to type ctrl. I thought it was going to take a lot to get used to it, but I was wrong. It's super intuitive and fun :) If you want to repro, I uploaded the STL and OBJ to 3D print the base, the firmware and other instructions. Enjoy!
funkaster··on Salesforce to Buy Slack
$17 billion for a bloated chat app, but that has proved it can (somehow) sustain a business model. IMO salesforce is just buying the missing piece of the b2b puzzle, and they believe 17billion is worth the market
funkaster··on My daughter was a creative genius, and then we bought her an iPhone
phones/tech are of course a problem if you don't set limits. But to me the biggest issue is not being able to connect to your kid. I have a 4yo and he loves to play on his tablet, and he even plays some videogames with me. But I try super hard to do other things with him as well, and try hard to enjoy them as much as I can. We play (non-digital) games he wants to play. We build legos. We also started playing some tabletop RPGs that are super simple for kids and he loves them. He asks me at least once a week to play (we actually always play the same scenario and he doesn't care, he still has tons of fun).

The parent in this article is struggling with too many things at the same time: kid becoming a teenager, tech, and lack of connection with your kid. Having kids and growing them to healthy human beings is super hard. I wouldn't blame the daughter's behavior to any single thing, it looks more like a combination of multiple issues. Hopefully they both can find a good path moving forward.

funkaster··on ReMarkable tablet open source tools and hacks
Of course direct feedback is good. But it's not scalable and you risk of running a very real case of bias towards whoever you're asking. Running telemetry on your software is not "evil" or "stampedes over civil liberties". You can most certainly run telemetry in a way that protects people's privacy and gives you insightful data on how your users operate and interact with your software. I know this, I've worked on an analytics service serving hundreds of millions of users. I'm building right now a feature-flagging/configuration/core metrics service that does exactly that: preserve user privacy and allow developers to learn about their users (not easy and there are some trade offs, like accuracy).
funkaster··on iFixit tools in Apple's lab
this is most certainly just a studio and not a real lab.
funkaster··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2020)

funkaster··on Bullet Train: Open-source feature flagging
I’m curious, what everyone wants to see in a feature flagging service? privacy? (gdpr, caap) %rollout? flexibility on rules?

from my perspective the most important thing would be privacy and ideally no sdk, but I acknowledge that I might be bias...

funkaster··on Bullet Train: Open-source feature flagging
feature flagging allows you to separate code deployment from feature releases. It’s a change in dev methodology/mentally and usually goes hand-in-hand with “trunk-based development” (trunk/master is always stable and you should avoid long lived branches).

a good feature flag service should also allow you to do % rollout to try to de-risk the release of a new feature, some times even auto-closing the feature if some specific metric passes a certain threshold (e.g. dau dropped 10%, number of errors increased x%, etc)

funkaster··on AWS forked my project and launched it as its own service
This is what people don't get when arguing against GPL: "oh, it's such a restrictive license! so viral, blah blah blah". In this case, it would've probable not changed the outcome, but could give the author some leverage for either compensation or mention. IANAL, but my understanding is that GPL would require you to keep the same terms and mention explicitly the original source.
funkaster··on Dockerfile Security Best Practices
I use docker secrets[0] and a script like this[1] to inject them in the ENV hashmap in my app.

funkaster··on The IRS Sets a Trap for Cryptocurrency Tax Cheats
I got a letter from the IRS a few months ago and the text said something along the lines of “we know you have accounts on cryptocurrency trading services. Please be aware that crypto trading is taxable and you can face severe penalties and even jail if you don’t report them”. I do have accounts but I have not traded with them... My guess the account they’re referring to is the one in coinbase, which I have not used since they announced the service.
funkaster··on Getting Fiber to My Town [video]
If you’re in the sunset you’re in luck: pretty much everywhere in there has Sonic coverage (iirc by renting at&t fiber, but could be wrong).
funkaster··on Ham radio is not dying, it's evolving
Not necessarily HAM, but I just bought a pair of T800s[0] to use when I go camping with my 4yo son and friends. I'm trying to get him to understand how radios work so we have been having fun talking and learning how to use call signals, etc. What I really liked about the T800 is the Bluetooth modem that you can use to send extra data between radios (like chat and geo coords).

funkaster··on One Year with ThinkPad and Linux (From MacBook Pro)
how can you be an open source advocate and still work with adobe & friends? - no question on the quality/productivity of those, just on your argument.

A more consistent argument would’ve been: “open source advocate, Gimp, Inkscape and others run even better on my mac than on linux” (would disagree on that, but at least it would be a more consistent argument)

funkaster··on ReMarkable 2.0 – A digital notebook that feels like paper
I purchased the original one during the crowdfunding campaing, and paid a really low price (iirc less than $300). It’s a great device, I used it for a few years. Pen latency was really good, paper feeling is true, battery was awesome. The handwriting->text conversion was poor, but my handwriting is horrible. I changed to an iPad Pro 6 months ago and have not looked back, but mostly because I went back to orgmode as my main note taking and using a keyboard is much easier.

Having said that, I’m actually considering getting this upgrade just to focus on taking notes and brainstorming.

funkaster··on Pathological Lying: Theoretical and Empirical Support for a Diagnostic Entity
why? I have no data either, but I’mnot seeing how you’re connecting the two. One is about personal values (saying the truth) the other one you’re concerned about is how to question the outside world. Two completely different things IMO (and things I’m currently trying to teach my 4yo kid)
