fumar··on The Final Speech from The Great Dictator (1940)
This could help balance Amazon’s leadership principles.
fumar··on Minnesota middle school students 'seem happy' after cellphone ban
Smartphones. I like to think they snuck in as a communication device more so than pocket computer. As in, kids and parents wanted to stay connected for emergencies but the software grossly exceeded text or phone call capabilities. I had a Nokia 9930 to reach my folks and rarely used it outside of making calls.
fumar··on Salad Fingers and the dawn of ‘weird YouTube’
The fly in the eye is forever burned in my memory.
fumar··on To the Board of Directors of OpenAI from former employees
Do you think this account is acting in earnest? They claim, that they (reddit user) and the board acted jointly and voiced concerns to Sam. The Reddit user makes it sound as if they are in direct contact with OpenAI leadership. Their word choice however comes off as junior and not senior like using “dude” or “bs.”
fumar··on New models and developer products
Do you build on AWS AI services then? Or any other cloud provider? The outcome is the same, right? Technical lock in, cost risks, integration maintenance, etc.
fumar··on Lenovo PC boss: 4 in 5 of our devices will be repairable by 2025
Too bad the hackintosh days are nearing an end. One of my favorite computers ever was an x230 with IPS screen running MacOS. It had a great keyboard, sensible small size, and swappable batteries.
fumar··on Every single Onewheel is being recalled after four deaths
I bought one, thought I mastered it, ended up in the ER, sold it. Onewheels require a full face helmet and pads. Even under ideal conditions, the device can fail of function different than expected causing the rider harm. I was riding mine off a 2-3 inch curb, which was on a familiar path I took daily, when the nose slammed and I flew off fracturing my rest. The sensation of a OW is amazing at low and high speeds, but the risk isn't worth the reward.
fumar··on NASA clears the air: No evidence that UFOs are aliens
He should write hard sci-fi. I would read it. I am fine with any hypothesis but doesn't mean we have tangible evidence.
fumar··on Amazon starting to track and penalize workers who work from home too much
Importantly, the Amazonians who follow the toxic promotion path know it is morally wrong. They will tell you and explain to you in a few minutes how it is the only way to operate at Amazon. If you want to be an L8 or higher, then you sacrifice yourself and everyone around you. Source: I work there. Also actively searching for new roles.
fumar··on Tell HN: Airbnb’s transparent pricing is a lie
I typically see AirBnB's as the more expensive option. I travel frequently and have shifted back towards hotels. They are easier to book, peace of mind, points or rewards, concierge services, the list goes on. The main reason for an AirBnB is larger spaces, unique designs, and areas with low hotel density.
fumar··on NotebookLM: An AI Notebook
How is it not a fact?
fumar··on NotebookLM: An AI Notebook
Why would I use any google service with a death countdown on its forehead? I have migrated away from Google almost completely. I can’t imagine being a product team there and having to defend product’s existence for more than a year.
fumar··on North Korean market prices suggest serious food shortages
Is that cause and effect defensible? I haven’t heard any Americans civilians or politicians claim overtly or subtly that the US should be more like China.
fumar··on Developer tools to create spatial experiences for Apple Vision Pro
Perhaps it is not the next iPhone but the next Mac. It is a better at home or at work general computing device. I am a cynic and I see it as the next iPad.
fumar··on Comparing Adobe Firefly, Dalle-2, and OpenJourney
MidJourney produces more consistent and usable results. I am running SD and also pay for MJ. I've tried several checkpoint and loras, but the output is often disappointing or incorrectly using the prompts.
fumar··on Goodbye, San Francisco
Thinking of Singapore?
fumar··on How to Delete Your Reddit Account and All Data Under GDPR/CCPA
Is there a way to increase density on Lemmy? I want it closer to old.Reddit.
fumar··on Native JSON Output from GPT-4
It is “good enough”. Where I struggle is maintaining its memory through a longer request where multiple iterations fail or succeed and then all of a sudden its memory is exceeded and starts fresh. I wish I could store “learnings” that it could revisit.
fumar··on Reddit.com appears to be having an outage
10% drops in overall comments so average pre and post or 10% in comment rates? I only ask out pure curiosity. I don't expect Reddit will ever publish engagement impacts during this period.
fumar··on Reddit.com appears to be having an outage
You saw 10% comment drops in subreddits still available or are you saying 10% of comments overall on all of reddit including the privacy subreddits?
fumar··on Inside the Wuhan lab weeks before Covid
> No it is not normal. Even post 9/11 no conversation was censored in US media

No true. 9/11 was a nearly perfect military industrial play and no one could publicly question the US actions post the event. It felt like a lockstep war machine with vengeance at an all time high. You must’ve not lived through it.

fumar··on ‘The Force has left Lucasfilm’: how Disney can salvage its $4B investment
Andor was good. It didn't need Star Was as its universe, but it is perhaps the best Star Wars anything in the last two decades.
fumar··on Apollo will close down on June 30th
Apollo saved my Reddit usage years ago. It has too many nice to have features to list. I suppose off to Discord I go. Most subreddits have a discord parallel. More than ever it feels like all of the major platforms are ripe for disruption. They are filled with aggressive hostile ads, algorithms set to engagement, and closed experiences.
fumar··on Apollo will close down on June 30th
Did you read his post? He recorded the calls which were misconstrued publicly. [1] https://old.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_w...
fumar··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
Fair comparison, I felt the same about the AirPods. What these three devices have in common? They are not pro devices and their physicality is portable and easily accessible. Is the same true for the Vision Pro? I am purposefully excluding price.
fumar··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
What about of distance and and field of view? I haven’t seen any metrics to complete the picture.
fumar··on Third-party Reddit apps are being crushed by price increases
What is an alternative?
fumar··on Google “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI”
Agreed. I pay for MJ and have several SD versions running on my PC. I like the ability to fine tune the SD models and my Pc with a 4090 is plenty fast, but I can't match MJ's output on artistic quality. SD allows for 4k sized outputs which is great but I can't use the art like I would like. FWIW the SD NSFW community is large but that is not where I invest my time with AI art.
fumar··on Europeans drain billions from banks, fed up with shrinking savings
What if the cash loses its value?
fumar··on Bed Bath and Beyond files for bankruptcy
Does this mark an end for our society's principles? Are we do for a dark age? Are we in it or will there be an enlightenment or renaissance?
