frodo8sam··on Scripts I wrote that I use all the time
I have these kind of scripts live as functions in my .bashrc, kind of a noob, is there a reason beyond convension to store them individually in bin?
frodo8sam··on Bots are getting good at mimicking engagement
It's worse, you're paying them so your competitor isn't standing in front of your store convincing them not to be your costumer.

You can either buy the top spot on queries that are looking for you or google will sell it to your competitor.

frodo8sam··on New lab-grown human embryo model produces blood cells
Perfect blood doping.

Kind of sad that that's the first thing that comes to mind...

frodo8sam··on Immunotherapy drug clinical trial results: half of tumors shrink or disappear
That's pretty much what happens when you get a stemcell transplant. Luckily there is steady improvement in the survival rate. This is a very old therapy by now of course. But let's hope the various form of immuno therapy take the same trajectory, getting a little better every year.
frodo8sam··on Europe enters the exascale supercomputing league with Jupiter
Who exactly were you going to buy equipment from? AMD/Nvidia/Intel are the only players in town.
frodo8sam··on Kenvue stock drops on report RFK Jr will link autism to Tylenol during pregnancy
Taking one gram every 5-6 hours for a maximum of 4 gram/day IS entirely reasonable.

I don't know how you jumped from "it's dangerous to take in to high amounts, even 4 times the recommended dose is dangerous" to "the recommened dose is dangerous".

When taken correctly it is very safe and had fewer side effects then NSAIDs like ibuprofen.

frodo8sam··on Review of Anti-Aging Drugs
Melatonin is just for jetlag/otherwise shifted sleeping schedule, are people using it as an anti aging drug?
frodo8sam··on Dutch Parliament: Time to ditch US tech for homegrown options
I don't vote for this party but you sre totally straw manning them with respect to data centres. The whole reason those became controversial is because American big tech companies would come in and negotiate deals with municipalities to consume all the energy of newly built green energy projects so they could claim they would make their green goals withouth making any investments themselves. Also you can question if the Netherlands is the right place being so densly populated resulting in issues with both the electricity grid and general land shortage.
frodo8sam··on Natural occurring molecule rivals Ozempic in weight loss, sidesteps side effects
The extraction problem has been solved for a long time to make recombinant insuline. Before that it had to be extracted from an animals pancreas. These days peptides are often improved using non-natural amino acids to make them more stable and thus longer acting. Semaglutide is a good example. These are synthesized using solid-phase synthesis.
frodo8sam··on Renault Is Giving Away Its Proprietary Tech to Stop EV Fires Quickly
I guess cooling is more important than keeping away oxidizers in this case and it's hard to beat water in that regard.
frodo8sam··on The FFT Strikes Back: An Efficient Alternative to Self-Attention
I would guess that the FFT scales better as you increase the number of tokens in the context window. Interesting Google's models outperform their competitors on context size.
frodo8sam··on BYD has already produced its first solid-state cells
Shorting is often a bad strategy due to the hight cost if you plan to hold for the long term. And with these companies with irrational evaluations you gave no idea when the stock price will correct. Better to exlude stocks that you can't price accurately from your portefolio.
frodo8sam··on What's Going on at the FBI?
Depends on your perspective. Many people would consider someone like Fauci non-partisan and more of a competent career expert, but Trumps people think he is very political and purge people like that. At the FBI they purge people who are probably quite competent and not particularly partisan but happened to work on Trumps case, which is mostly about sending a message I think not do much about finding the right employees to work at the FBI. This is very un American in my view.
frodo8sam··on The U.S. needs a shipbuilding revolution
The nation doesn’t just need a shipbuilding revolution—it needs a broader industrial revitalization. Strengthening semiconductor manufacturing, modernizing military and civilian aviation, reinvigorating automotive innovation, and more are all critical. Tackling this alone would be overwhelming, but collaboration with trusted neighbors and reliable allies could make these ambitions achievable. Luckily we have a real bridge builder in cha...
frodo8sam··on When AI Promises Speed but Delivers Debugging Hell
For me ai has been pretty useful. Difference is I'm not a software engineer, I just write scripts to help me do my job. If I wrote bigger applications I doubt llms could help me.
frodo8sam··on Dutch Align with US Export Controls on Some ASML Chip Tools
I fully expect people like Tim Cook and Elon Musk to appease the Chinese government if it benefits their business and doesn’t make them appear cozy with the CCP to the U.S. public.
frodo8sam··on Dutch Align with US Export Controls on Some ASML Chip Tools
The supply chain for these machines is heavily dependent on the US and the Netherlands is heavily dependent on US security guarantees, just like the rest of Europe.
frodo8sam··on After a 24-second test of its engines, the New Glenn rocket is ready to fly
Not pure luck though, they tried 15 different baffle configurations. Would of course be easier to filter configuration in simulations.
frodo8sam··on Nvidia Warp: Python framework for high-performance simulation and graphics code
Python? Are you sure? Maybe hardcore hpc types don't use python but it's still the bread and butter of most academics. Especially anyone doing data science/machine learning. If anything it has gotten more popular as R is slowly being displaced.
frodo8sam··on I've stopped using box plots (2021)
I'll take a plain histogram/kde plot every day of the week over those damn violin plots. I think box plots are quite usefull as they are easy to read but only if you trust the author has actually looked at the histogram. And you can typically not trust the author to have done that.
frodo8sam··on The exponential growth of solar power will change the world
It probably would have been nice to have one build now or even better 10 years ago. It's a good base of stable green energy to have during the transition. But planning to build a new one now seems purely political. It doesn't make sense when it takes 10 years to build at best. Every recent plant build in the west has had huge cost and time overruns. But then to make those costs back the plant has to compete with solar/wind/batteries for a good 20 years, STARTING IN 2035-2040. That's never going to work out financially. Solar is already cheaper and you will have to make those investments in the grid either way before the nuclear plant comes online.
frodo8sam··on First randomized trial of Ozempic for alcoholism shows big drops in drinking
The problem is also that this class of drugs (modified peptides) is produced in a very different way from most drugs (small molecules). When small molecule GLP-1 receptor agonists hit the market the shortage will be over very quickly. There is a lot of capacity to produce small molecules in place already. Many companies are currently racing to bring small molecules to market.
frodo8sam··on First randomized trial of Ozempic for alcoholism shows big drops in drinking
Yeah, other GLP-1 receptor agonists are expected to have similar effects. One of the effects of GLP-1 receptor activation is a reduction in the rate of gastric emptying. So it slows down digestion and gives you a full, satiated feeling. Guess the urge for some drugs is related to the urge for food and that's how it supresses drug use. But the last bit is speculation on my part.
frodo8sam··on Will better superconductors transform the world?
Running cables over a long distance in the sky between balloons and planes sounds a lot more challenging than cooling cables on earth. Also High voltage DC is already quite good.
frodo8sam··on Viking 7B: open LLM for the Nordic languages trained on AMD GPUs
I understand, not saying they did something wrong just pointing out the selection of languages was not because of them belonging to the same family but rather to serve a certain region.
frodo8sam··on Viking 7B: open LLM for the Nordic languages trained on AMD GPUs
I don't think they decided that, they included Finish which is completely unrelated to the other nordic languages. If they just picked languages that are related for cross learning including Dutch or German would have made more sense indeed.
frodo8sam··on People with gas and propane stoves breathe more unhealthy nitrogen dioxide
I found my induction stove to actually be more responsive than gas. The main issue with induction is the noise in my experience, but a more expensive stove might not have that problem.
frodo8sam··on Cost of developing new drugs may be lower than industry claims: trial
No the EU has the EMA which approves drugs for all European countries in collaboration with national drug agencies. And the EMA FDA and japanese agency are pretty well aligned. So approval by one will typically mean you also meet the requirements for the others. Notable exceptions are the recent Alzheimer drugs.
frodo8sam··on Why dentists say you shouldn't rinse after brushing
I wouldn't trust this based on some online reviews. i would want to see clinical trails. Reviewers, if not straight up bought, will probably be very sensitive to placebo effects.
frodo8sam··on Boeing chief must have engineering background, Emirates boss says
The long time CEO of ASML, probably one of the most successful engineering companies of the last two decades, is an accountant by training. But if you hear him speak it's all about the quality of the product and delivering value to the customer. The CEO of Boeing should have his priorities right and be willing to listen to his engineers instead of maximizing profits by reducing cost. What he did in college is not that important in my opinion.
