fritigern··on 'Brutal Battle' Expected as Regulators Close in on Apple Around the World
Please do ban, it tells more about you than me. I'll just open a new one.
fritigern··on Brave Search passes 2.5B queries, allows users to choose search rankings
Can you ELI5 why that is so? A quick search showed that it's mostly ex-Mozilla folks at Brave.
fritigern··on Brave Search passes 2.5B queries, allows users to choose search rankings
I don't know why, but I had a very negative impression of Brave for a long time. I still haven't tried their browser, but the search is suprisingly good! It also uses their own web index, which I find to be very impressive.

Strange. I'm on a HDPI screen (XFCE) and don't have any issues with Telegram.
fritigern··on US Sanctions Helped China Supercharge Its Chipmaking Industry
> Here is what they can’t manufacture: electronics. Or planes, or tanks, or even ordinary cars.

They'll just buy it from China. Like everyone else does.

fritigern··on What will a Chromium-only Web look like?
Not having alternatives is really bad. Chromium-only web would suck.
fritigern··on Valve’s Steam Deck makes a brilliant case against walled gardens
Android never used the Linux userspace. Steam Deck is using KDE. I'm optimistic.

Gooooood
fritigern··on Valve’s Steam Deck makes a brilliant case against walled gardens
20+ years of hard work by the Wine team has paid off!
fritigern··on US Sanctions Helped China Supercharge Its Chipmaking Industry
Russia just did.
fritigern··on US Sanctions Helped China Supercharge Its Chipmaking Industry
Russia has around 140 million people, is a one of the major exporters of oil, natural gas, wheat and fertilizer.

Thats why things like this are happening: https://www.reuters.com/world/india/russia-becomes-indias-se...

fritigern··on Cloudflare had a partial outage
Another reminder that centralized services like Cloudflare are a bad idea.
fritigern··on Sshfs Is Orphaned
I love KDE connect and it uses sshfs in the background. I hope it gets a new owner soon. Hmmm, maybe I should volunteer...
fritigern··on Tell HN: Instagram demands I send a picture of myself to prove I own my account
We should stop using Instagram or any Facebook service.

I read it. It is nonsense.
fritigern··on Facebook says Apple is too powerful – they're right
> Apple has control over your phone, your passwords, your photos, your music, your emails, your credit cards/payment methods. And you can backup nothing of it in a usable way. Without a working Apple account any iPhone is as good as a brick.

This is why no one could ever convince me to buy an Apple product.

fritigern··on Facebook says Apple is too powerful – they're right
I can't believe I'm saying this, but Facebook is right.

Apple should be given a massive punitive fine for preventing app sideloading. This is disgusting anti-competitive behaviour.

I'm sure the traffic is encrypted. But it's trivially easy for Facebook to copy your private key to their servers.
fritigern··on 700M users and Premium
Nonsense.

The app is closed source. Facebook could be copying all your private keys to their servers and you would never know.

Flatpack and Snap versions both work ok.

I'm using the distro (manjaro) build, which is also pretty good. No idea how good the AUR versions are.

fritigern··on Tell HN: My wife was banned from WhatsApp without reason or recourse

fritigern··on Bunny fonts – privacy respecting drop-in replacement for Google Fonts
Of course it does.

A country like America that has been murdering people in many wars around the world without hesitation is unlikely to take my privacy seriously. They don't respect my right to live, do you think they will respect my right to privacy?

fritigern··on 700M users and Premium
Telegram's Linux client is simply Amazing.
fritigern··on 700M users and Premium
The main thing keeping me from using Signal is that their Linux client is really really bad. In contrast Telegram has a great Linux client.
fritigern··on Bunny fonts – privacy respecting drop-in replacement for Google Fonts
Tell that to the people that were killed by American military in Iraq, Afganistan, Libya, Syria, Pakistan, Yemen and probably other places I am forgetting.

> The number of governments that have not had to deal with ethics concerns is exactly zero.

Some are worse than others. America is one of the worst. War, invasions, mass surveillance, mass incarcaration...

fritigern··on Bunny fonts – privacy respecting drop-in replacement for Google Fonts
Signal Foundation is based in the US. It takes only 1 national security letter to compromise them.
fritigern··on 700M users and Premium
Neither is WhatsApp. It's a closed source app, no one outside of Meta knows if it is actually encrypted properly.

The Syrian War was broadcast on Twitter. The Ukrainian War is broadcast on Telegram.

Not to mention the Durov brothers are exiled from Russia after Russia took VKontakte from them.
