fraudsyndrome··on $39 Cooler Master case turns your old Framework Laptop parts into a tiny PC
Instead of a case, I have a couple old laptops which broken screens but everything else is okay. Could I not just detach the screen (hinge and all) and just have the base case with the default laptop keyboard? Then just plug in a hdmi cable in the port and use that as my new screen?

In this case, there would be no need for a universal case because I'm repurposing everything in the laptop "as is" except the screen.

fraudsyndrome··on Ask HN: My Samsung phone suddenly stopped accepting my password, any ideas why?
I should buy a lottery ticket.
fraudsyndrome··on Ask HN: My Samsung phone suddenly stopped accepting my password, any ideas why?
I'm also quite certain that a factory reset would fix it but it's a last resort because I'm a fool who doesn't backup their phone regularly.

Maybe I'll have this phone as an expensive paperweight and hopefully if technology advances enough in the future to be able to pull data from it or find out what's wrong, I can grab my sentimental data on there.

fraudsyndrome··on You will ask many, many questions
Reading this makes me feel like a super slow learner. I've experienced the "15 minute rule" before and for me, 15 minutes goes by so quick.

I might have a question, try to find the answer, find several answers and have to dig into them to understand the answer to determine which is likely the better one etc. But this in no way takes 15 minutes, could be 30 45 60 or more. It's like I get a step closer and each "phase" is a new 15 minutes and so a new question to ask.

fraudsyndrome··on Triple-dip La Niña confirmed as BoM makes declaration
Hasn't there been multiple variations/iterations of "validity of climate change"? As in, some form of "climate change isn't real" to "climate change is real but it's normal and not man made" to "climate change is real and man made but it's not that bad" so on so forth.

I wonder if the opposite exists. People in climate change denier groups that exaggerate just how normal it is which as you said only causes more doubts and recruits for the opposition.

I admit I haven't delved into the "opposition" - in this case assuming that "deniers" are a loud minority and the main agreed viewpoint is some form of climate is going to be bad for everyone regardless of the source. But given the rigorous process in science and how much evidence is available (whether deniers are skeptical of ALL of the evidence or not) - is there any research with a similar process against it? Regarding what you said about how the "irreversible collapse is also quite unlikely"?

fraudsyndrome··on Git log is not a changelog
Doesn't mean others are in the same boat as you. The team I work on frequently write detailed commits to the point where I can (and have several times) successfully searched information from years ago on a block of code with the ticket number and the developers (even myself) reasoning at the time.

Maybe it depends on the project but I've found myself doing this so often that I won't stop, it's such a small task that has given me so much benefit. If it doesn't help anyone then nothing was lost.

fraudsyndrome··on FalsiScan: Make it look like a PDF has been hand signed and scanned
I used to use tools like these but then I wondered - why do I "need" to make an image look scanned? Why do I have to add all this noise to the image before sending it over? Why can't I just take a photo of whatever I need to send and leave it at that?
fraudsyndrome··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
I've had this issue before. If you're on Firefox, open up the history sidebar with ctrl + h,then in the top left corner click on the word History to open the dropdown and select Bitwarden. You'll be able to have it "open" without clicking the extension popup.
fraudsyndrome··on Why Can’t I Sleep?
> a recent study found a physical cause for this - something about a genetic mutation that causes our sleep-signaling hormones to be created without the tails they usually have to navigate to the correct spots in the brain

I know someone who is currently going through the diagnosing phase, could you please link that study? Their GP mentioned that you could take medication to "work" through it in order to match societies "normal" times.

I don't know what a hormone "tail" means but if they have trouble navigating to the correct spots in the brain, how does it eventually find the correct spot? That reads to me like the hormone won't be able to navigate to the correct spot or it'll have trouble every time but from what I read those with DSPD do have a typical, consistent sleep time, it's just delayed (relative to the majority of people)

fraudsyndrome··on LG is getting out of the mobile phone business
I would speculate that for some people, while the feature that they removed was preferable for the consumer, it wasn't necessarily a deal breaker. So in the same vein, if they included that feature, it wouldn't be a deal maker either.

With all these features they are removing, I personally can't ever see myself buying a device solely based off of that one feature and so I compromise.

I'm not happy with having to compromise but it's not a perfect world and I'm not so set in my opinion that I would consider not buying it based off of X feature (to an extent)

fraudsyndrome··on Spy pixels in emails 'have become endemic'
> Since people are already weary of clicking the unsubscribe link

Can you please elaborate on this? Do you mean people intentionally avoid this because it leads to the advertisers marking that as "read" and therefore a live user?

Asking because I recently purged my old emails which had thousands of emails, they obviously never stopped sending even with zero interaction.

But my method was to click the unsubscribe link which I was afraid might give them more information about them and doing the opposite of what I wanted. I know some didn't even respect the unsubscribe, I took note of which ones I explicitly clicked and they're still sending spam to me.

fraudsyndrome··on Microbial ecosystems in the mouth and gut are linked to many ills
I took this when I was a teenager too, acne was horrible even with a proper skincare routine. Getting access to Accutane was easy, only took 1 session with a Dermatologist who asked me basic questions on what my routine was. In hindsight I wonder if this should have been harder to access.

Of course it worked and I feel like I gotboff relatively lucky with the side-effects. One benefit was dry(er) skin/hair, which sounds bad but oily skin/hair was relatively worse to live with. I also never knew how bad some side-effects could have been which is why I said I was lucky.

However what I'll never know is - whether I'd be different if I never took it. Some side-effects are so out of the ordinary that even if I have it, I'll never effectively be able to say "yes, that was because I took Accutane when I was younger". Even being lucky, I still wished I just let the hormonal acne play out.

Edit: I just had a quick glance on the list of side-effects and for example, I've had back pain since I was a teen, and I thought it was just my form that was the cause even though I'd watch tens of hours of videos on proper form, people I know would use way worse form and never suffer an injury. Minor anxiety and even being susceptible to being sick. Some of these apply but they are also very common in those taking Isotretinoin (besides the anxiety; 1/1000-10000) but sadly I can't ever know whether the cause was due to the medication.

fraudsyndrome··on Bitwarden releases “emergency access” feature
This is what I figured out by accident that helped me overcome the memory issue. Ctrl + H on Firefox, click the top-left dropdown for Bitwarden.

> 2. If you open up bitwarden before the page is loaded, it says it can't find the password box to fill in. This is probably an extension limitation, but still annoying.

The sidebar trick above also helps this issue. When it can't find the password box you just click the "refresh" icon on the Bitwarden sidebar and it'll fill it in. This limitation may be by design so it doesn't have constant access to everything you browse, only allows a "snapshot" of the HTML to fill in when loaded (or refreshed) - complete guess though.

fraudsyndrome··on Workaholism leads to health problems, work addiction risk depends on occupation
I'd add that there is some kind of toxic behaviour from men in my CS class. Think the typical 4channer type people. Obviously not all but when I had a chat with a couple of women from my class, they mentioned it was common to get hit on all the time during group projects when they were there to study and get talked down on as if they don't know what's going on.

I see similar behaviours to how men sometimes "gatekeep" games or even anything computer related. It's quite common to hear of stories women face on online games when they open their mic.

Is there a chance they'd avoid it based on the type of people they might face? Maybe.

fraudsyndrome··on The Strange Case of Dr. Ho Man Kwok (2019)
Absolutely not, in fact I didn't mention USA anywhere in my post. I was curious on what constitutes racism in the east vs. the west and I don't have experience in the east. I'm also not disregarding anywhere in between the countries of the east and west.

I know of the historical factors but that's like saying Germans are still racist because they have a history of being Nazis - I was more interested in what kind of experiences of racism between Asia are happening in modern times which I've seen you've written so thanks for that. I was also curious whether there were any parallels in one of the bigger issues like police brutality of minorities in Asia.

There is a whole other discussion when talking about true hate vs. stereotyping.

fraudsyndrome··on The Strange Case of Dr. Ho Man Kwok (2019)
What kind of (racist) actions are taken in the east due to this prejudice they have? And how does that compare (or how is it way higher) to how western racism is towards those minorities in the western countries? Thinking they are better doesn't really compare.
fraudsyndrome··on The Strange Case of Dr. Ho Man Kwok (2019)
I've heard this repeated so many times but I don't actually understand what that means - can you elaborate? Mentioning racism causes more racism? Doesn't that make sense?

Sort of sounds like the same thing as "the more you test for COVID the more cases there will be"

I've read your sentence like 10 times and it makes no sense to me. How would one exploit someone calling out (false by your definition) racism to cause more racism?

fraudsyndrome··on The Strange Case of Dr. Ho Man Kwok (2019)
Are they for different reasons? What is the reason Koreans think it's bad for health? As I haven't read about that.

Given that in the west it was also dubbed "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome" I would think some form of prejudice played a part.

fraudsyndrome··on I now have an Oculus paperweight
Recently tried to delete multiple old accounts on FB and they have this thing where they lock your account and won't allow you to do anything until you verify yourself through identification.

I've decided to just leave them "open" forever instead of giving them my info.

fraudsyndrome··on iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro
Then people will but the USB-C adapter but in 2-3 years Apple will be removing the charging port altogether and introduce wireless charging only!

I actually don't like that they removed the accessories from the box, unless they can prove that they reduced the cost of the phone's overall price.

I sell my accessories to other people which reduces the phones overall cost by a non-insignificant amount. People will happily pay $5 less for a 2nd hand (but brand new and unused) Apple accessory like earpods/adapter if it's genuine since there are so many fakes out there.

fraudsyndrome··on Tech firms face growing resentment of parent employees during Covid-19
> 3. I'm not sure if "children are our future" is our future. This model might not be viable forever as the world population keeps growing. This is a whole other can of worms.

I think you bring up some good points and also I can sympathise with the parents in my workplace that had this issue thrust upon them due to covid. I won't comment on them nor does it personally affect my work much, if at all - barely anyone on my team are parents and those that are are making it work so I'm not picking up any extra work because of their kids.

But I have never heard of any parent ever say that they are having kids because children are the future so it's odd for me to see so many people say that in this thread. I don't need parents to justify to me why it's harder for them, I already agree with that but the future thing is a very interesting viewpoint I've never personally come across before.

fraudsyndrome··on Secret gyms and the economics of prohibition
Possibly.. but even this thread I was felt like there were more mentions to just purely stats of IFR by age group as if that was all that matters and they were very active in this thread.

It's good to know it's being brought up when people mention IFR of age groups as if that "proves" we shouldn't worry about it.

fraudsyndrome··on Secret gyms and the economics of prohibition
> Now, which number applies to the vast majority of us? And this is not even controlled for anything but age.

How about instead of focusing solely on the IFR of young people - bring into the conversation how those same young people may not 100% recover.

What about discussing how those same infected young(er) people may not die but they may pass it to other people that aren't so lucky?

fraudsyndrome··on Secret gyms and the economics of prohibition
I think people need to dial back a bit and mention that just because you didn't die from infection - doesn't mean you are 100% the way you were pre-infection.

I rarely see mentions too that just because the mortality rate is lower for younger/healthy people - why does that exclude them potentially transmitting it to older folk?

fraudsyndrome··on Feds say Yale discriminates against Asian, white applicants
Not sure what assumptions are to be made by comparing this with US population by ethnicity except that they should be match up - which I don't agree with.

Also are Jewish people considered White in this case? I simultaneously see that they are referred to as minorities but also don't see them represented in statistics such as these when comparing ethnicity in X with ethnic population in the US.

fraudsyndrome··on Apple reports Q3 results
Similar story although I haven't purchased a macbook yet. Used to purchase laptops within the 500AUD range which would break or die within a year, decided to spend 1000AUD on a Asus zenbook and it's held up quite nicely over 3 years - only issue being the battery but that's expected.

Haven't spent anything close to a MBP but I know people still using the 2015 model and holding up nicely. I guess price sort of correlates to build quality? Although same can't be said for resale value.

fraudsyndrome··on The NBA bans customers from putting ‘freehongkong’ on customized league jerseys
But you were an ethnic minority too when you were in China right?

I never understood this line of thinking though - the way you describe it sounds like it was out of pure curiosity rather than racism. It's interesting seeing the difference of how people define racism based on who they are and where they grew up.

For example - racism in Australia can be seen through racial slurs and physical violence from the moment they start interacting with others (preschool) up to adulthood. Or it can come in many subvert forms in the professional workspace. Contrast this to where I hear of racial minorities coming into Asia who for the most part get treated at best above everyone and at worst out of curiosity (e.g. staring)

fraudsyndrome··on Our Self-Isolating Future: How working from home could reshape society
Not sure if this counts but I like working from home because I have a dog that I feel guilty leaving for 11 hours out of the day every weekday - especially if it's going to be a particularly rainy or hot day and he has to stay outdoors. He's pretty easy going so I don't have to play with him all the time but just give him company.

Also after getting into full time work I realise I have no time for anything, my schedule after I get home is pretty much cook dinner, dog responsibilities, and 1 hour of spare time before I have to sleep (otherwise I'm yawning throughout the next day). I've just made an extra 3 hours free in my day because I'm not commuting to work.

It definitely takes more discipline to work from home because I get easily distracted. And I think I wouldn't mind it being on an on/off schedule as opposed to 100% WFH. I usually like being alone but I can see it starting to creep up on me. Our team recently did a virtual lunch and it worked better than I expected!

fraudsyndrome··on The state of the restaurant industry
> A better way would be to suspend all debt collection and rent collection for x months.

I know this would help for people I personally know in this industry.

Dine in has been reduced almost entirely but takeaway orders hasn't deviated too much from the standard.

The reality here is that a lot of small hospitality businesses don't actually make much profit at all so it's unlikely that they'd survive too long with this forced reduced business. And it's always unhelpful to hear (in general not from you) comments like "maybe they should have saved up more earlier" or "they shouldn't be opening up a restaurant then" because a lot of times they can't work in any other industry - this is all they know.

Imagine having reduced business through no fault of your own yet you're still liable for paying the commercial rent of $1.2k per week. You can't sell the business because no one is buying. You can't sell it because you lose all the goodwill which is bad especially if you've spent any money renovating the place up to standard.
