frangolino··on Beyond the Numbers: A Closer Look at Renting by Choice
Some of these (availability of places for sale vs. for rent; difficulty of actually getting the rental even if you're financially capable...) depend completely on your location.

But I agree with the general sentiment, that the numbers are an oversimplification: it's not only a matter of finance; the two products are different.

You'd have made the PM look like an utter fool, so he shut you down. Classic office politics. What's good for (i) the company, (ii) you, (iii) your boss... often are not the same things... sometimes in direct contradiction.

The interests of the involved parties must always be taken into account.

Contact (photo)lithography and this nanoimprint lithography are not the same thing.

The 2nd is like embossing, the 1st is like stencil (like other types of photolithography, but the photomask touches the wafer).

frangolino··on Artist trained rats to take selfies to make a point about social media
> That said, it's really more of an art project than anything to do with science as the article makes it clear the rats were trained to push buttons to get sugar, the selfies were just artistic flourish to make a (fairly overt) point.

according to the article, this was just to get them hooked at first, but they kept doing it later:

> After the rats were trained to push the level for sugar, Lignier changed the experiment's parameters. Sometimes taking a picture would yield a piece of sugar, and sometimes would not.

> Nevertheless, the rats kept on jamming the button, taking dozens of selfies. After awhile, he says they largely stopped bothering to eat the sugar, even when it came out.

frangolino··on The Enchippening
yeah. i am optimistic about it though. i mean just look at falstad's circuit simulator; it's not that far behind LTSpice. this is a (former) professional piece of software compared to a dude's pet project. imagine what we could do if we got some serious work into it.
frangolino··on What kind of bubble is AI?
> ... semi structured problems.

i think i agree with this,

> I think "everywhere all the time" AI for chat, driving, coding, or medical image analysis etc is a pipe dream absolutely.

but i'm not sure i'd put medical image analysis in this group. i mean, aren't there already several examples of software outperforming humans in this domain?
