Especially when it comes to dual-language support... Swype was excellent at determining which language you meant to use.
frandroid··on Google Acquires North
Swype. I really miss my swype keyboard. I kept it installed for the longest time after it got acquihired, until they shut down one of the remote servers or something, and then it would crash. Why could they not move that code over to Gboard? It was so good.

Internal tools are always what takes the longest to get the greenlight to rewrite... Don't take shortcuts you don't want to live with forever :)
frandroid··on Why the US military usually punishes misconduct but police often close ranks
It's amazing that this writer is based in New York and didn't mention NYC's $200M+ annual police settlement payments. It's completely insane.
frandroid··on Why the US military usually punishes misconduct but police often close ranks
We have a version of that in Ontario: The SIU, the Special Investigations Unit, which investigates every incident of police action that involves injury or worse in the province. It rarely finds anything wrong and can't really punish people. It's mostly staffed by former cops (because who else does investigative work? lawyers maybe? but would they work at their rates?)

There needs to be consequences for bad behaviour, but I think beyond that the solutions are further down the roots, in terms of the institutional culture that attracts and protects bullies, brutalizers.

frandroid··on The value of Tor and anonymous contributions to Wikipedia
Huh, Wikipedia is already free and useful?

Anyway, Wikipedia raises TONS of money but it goes to staff of dubious purpose with regards to its goals.

frandroid··on What I learned from writing for The Onion for a month (2015)
Man, that's a gruelling release schedule, even if it's basically "once a week per person". Most podcasts don't do the weekly thing, and those that do, it's either their full-time job AND/OR have a whole team working on it... I suspect that you guys could have benefitted from cutting back on the rhythm and working more as a team on more episodes.

What I find amusing is that all of today's SPA frameworks/views are kind of descended from Angular, which Google built internally after learning the lessons of how to build such a thing while putting the Gmail front-end together. We 15 years of SPA usage in email applications demonstrating their superiority. We have things like Facebook, the one true SPA which rules them all. And yet. Turbolinks.

(And I say that as a big RoR fan!)

frandroid··on On Liberty (1859) [pdf]
Scarcely. IANA(C)L, but you would have to find an area of law that is not very well legislated, and then you would have to exhaust existing areas of national and international law, comparable laws from other countries, constitutional law, jurisprudence, still finding yourself wanting, and even then you would do much better to use contemporary philosophers, some of which might be descended from Mill in their philosophical outlook.
frandroid··on Air conditioning's original purpose was to enable factory processes
The closer you get to the equator, the more you're likely to see these. When I was visiting Turkey, I didn't notice them in Istanbul because most rooftops are not visible from the street, but then I visited Safranbolu, a small tourist town, and there almost every century home had this recently-made metallic hot water tank on top which completely destroyed the bucolic architectural character of the town.

One of my uncles here in Canada built a passive system by just putting a giant 1" PVC tube coil on the backside of his roottop to heat up water for the swimming pool, since the swimmable season is pretty short anyway.

> hydro

Okay, the power company is named Toronto Hydro, but it buys electricity from whatever is available on the grid, be it hydro, gas, nuclear (Darlington wasn't built to power Ottawa...), wind (hello Chatham farmland!) or solar.

frandroid··on DuckDuckGo, Google, and Android choice screens
If Apple really invested in OSX it could be a threat to windows, unfortunately, combined with the high cost of the hardware, OSX's downslide means it's stuck to its current pro market...

1) search results need to be dynamic over time

2) MSFT has clauses in its contract to address this. If a commenter on HN thinks of this one minute after reading the article, you can be sure that their legal team has thought about it too.

> I find it difficult to justify

The U.S. is the hegemon. It's going to use its weight to push people around, especially if it has a chance to push China around. It did.

When the 2008 financial crisis happened, some Swiss banks were in crisis and the FBI managed to finally break through Swiss bank secrecy in exchange for bailout funds (for U.S. operations). Suddenly tons of Americans hiding money in Switzerland had to make "voluntary disclosures" and pay tax. That's what being a hegemon allows you to do.

frandroid··on How does the Gmail unsubscribe button work?
Because people like the GP and the GGP click "Spam" instead of the unsubscribe link/process for these services. (I do the same if I can't unsubscribe easily.) Any service that requires me to login to unsubscribe, rather than provide a tokenized unsubscribe link in the email, can suck it.

frandroid··on Americans, it turns out, would rather visit a store than buy food online
I used to live 20 floors above a supermarket. I could see quite clearly when they'd bring in a large garbage container and dump hundreds of pounds of produce into it, pêle-mêle, and then it getting carted away.

I've spent almost the entire 3 weeks of my vacation in Turkey in 2015 visiting Roman archeological sites... From the Library of Celsus in Ephesus, to the entire hilltop in Bergama, to the cemetary and fantastic amphitheatre in Pamukkale, to the caves in Cappadocia (okay, those are post-Roman, but they're Christian)... Then there's the mind-blowing Hittite and Akkadian stuff at the Museum of Anatolian civilizations in Ankara... Walking along the Lycian way...

There are very few false news actors on the left. Most fake news is either corporate or state-sponsored, and /somehow/ that heavily skews very right.

frandroid··on A day using money in Cuba
Basically the United States will attempt to seriously penalize companies which trade with Cuba, though considering that large hotel chains like Melia can fully operate them and seemingly not face consequences, there must be some good workarounds or corporate firewalling...
frandroid··on A day using money in Cuba
I have a friend who had befriended a Cuban guy and she was visiting him every year or two... On her last two visits he was detained multiple days for hanging out with her. He has now left Cuba for Russia.
