frandroid··on Intel Issues Updates to Protect Systems from Security Exploits
I don't know why you're being downvoted; it's crucial that Intel patches this deficiency for all CPU models which are currently in use, which is pretty much all of them, since some systems work nearly forever. We're talking about going back 15 years or so?

I mean this is like the Y2K bug, in that every system needs to have its CPU verified to ensure that it's covered by the patches, otherwise the system should be shut down and a new CPU provided. Since many of these CPUs have sockets for which CPUs are not produced anymore, whole new systems will have to be purchased.

Of course this might the result Intel wants to achieve.

That's your good mental health right there. That's worth a fortune. I'd never threaten to walk out on a job like that. This is where the article's advice is more useful than the commenters' :)

And that's those caught. From those rapes where women decided to report and get a rape kit done.
frandroid··on Gabriel García Márquez’s Archive Freely Available Online
I've been told that the translation of Bulgakov's Master and Margarita that I'm currently reading (along with its copious translators' contextual footnotes) makes the novel eminently more reading than previous translation, which was apparently much more stilted.
frandroid··on We’re sorry, and we’re not rolling out the fees change
Patreon have built a kind micropayments platform, but suddenly they decided they weren't happy with being a micropayments platform anymore, charging PayPal-level fees on transactions, and many more artifically inflated transactions at that. We already have PayPal, we don't need Patreon as a second one which isn't competitive.
frandroid··on We’re sorry, and we’re not rolling out the fees change
I think a major issue that many commentators here don't touch is the idea that Patreon plainly lied to its users. They said "more money will go to creators" when the real action was "we're charging more money to users with barely any more benefit to creators". Everyone understands that $1 going to $1.37 is "more money going to Patreon" and the stated benefit was spin. It didn't make me change my pledges but I was shocked by the dishonesty.

> TLDR: Aggregate on a single day, but pro-rate the second month, not the first, so there isn't a "runt" payment up-front.

That was my immediate thought reading this text. Of course it'll confuse some users, but since it's the fairest way, it should be the way to go. Also, just don't charge for the prorated period if the feed is going to be as big as the contribution (e.g. for a couple days for someone contributing $2 a month)

frandroid··on Cinema’s greatest scene: ‘Casablanca’ and ‘La Marseillaise’
Awesome.

My only and excellent experience of the Castro theatre is watching Hitchcock's Vertigo there, just days after my brother-in-law had given me the tour of city, of which I was a visitor. Suddenly you realize how central to the movie the city is. There's what's now a good joke about the Mission, too.

frandroid··on The Cost Savings Of Netflix's Internal Spot Market
Their capacity keeps growing so the savings would be over the same amount of computing, but overall the total amount of computing they do keeps going up as shows move from being shot in 4K to 8K, and they acquire more and more shows to broadcast.

> It’s a bit like the way everyone gravitates towards the kitchen at a house party.

I've solved this problem by dimming or turning off the lights in all the rooms I don't want people to hang out in and having brighter lighting in the room I want people to stay in. It works wonders.

They really should be asking on the second visit. I've enabled them for some sites (actually, this reminds me I haven't seen notifications for one in a while) but popping up before I've had time to assess the content is rude.
frandroid··on Facebook users in Romania see content related to street protests reviewed
Facebook and Twitter routinely censor on behalf of repressive governments. But the joke is on Facebook and Twitter, as it is them which pay this price as the cost of doing business in these countries.
frandroid··on Facebook users in Romania see content related to street protests reviewed
Facebook does this every day. For example, they regularly close Kurdish-related groups and pages at the behest of the Turkish government, and not just Turkish ones; recently there were Kurdish FB groups based in Canada closed as well.
frandroid··on Bitcoin Isn’t Tulips, It’s Open Source Money
> A) Bitcoin is congested with transactions and takes hours to process some of them

frandroid··on Cortana is really bad
Back when I was at MSN everything become oriented at delivering Bing searches at all costs, so whoever did this probably boosted their stats, got a 4.5 on their review, and now nobody dares improving the behaviour lest they have to justify the millions of lost Bing queries per day.
