fortran77··on A Crisis comes to Wordle: Reusing old words
I start with the same word every day. I hate to change it, because I want the joy of getting the wordle in 1 someday.
fortran77··on Two kinds of AI users are emerging
I know it's fun to bash Microsoft, but--while Claude is better, Microsoft's Copilot is far from "awful". I've used it productively with the VS Code integration for some esoteric projects: PIC PIO programming and Verilog.

fortran77··on Waymo robotaxi hits a child near an elementary school in Santa Monica
I'm a big fan of Waymo and have enjoyed my Waymo rides. And I don't think Waymno did anything "bad" here.

> The young pedestrian “suddenly entered the roadway from behind a tall SUV, moving directly into our vehicle’s path,” the company said in its blog post. Waymo said its vehicle “immediately detected the individual as soon as they began to emerge from behind the stopped vehicle.”

BUT! As a human driver, I avoid driving near the schools when school's letting out. There's a high school on my way home and kids saunter and jaywalk across the street, and they're all 'too cool' to press the button that turns on the blinking crosswalk. So I go a block out of my way to bypass the whole school area when I'm heading home that way.

Waymos should use the same rationale. If you can avoid going past a school zone when kids are likely to be there, do it!

But the 3 isn’t comparable. It’s cheap, looks cheap and feels cheap.
fortran77··on Tesla to Stop Production of Models S and X
From the article:

> Musk also announced the end of production for its Model S and Model X higher end vehicles, which have seen sluggish sales compared with its other EVs. Tesla will use the Model S and X factory space in Fremont, Calif., to manufacture Optimus robots, Musk said.

Most likely they spoofed the reporting API to "FlightAware" or other ADSB crowd-data-sourced sites and didn't spoof "ADSB Signals"
fortran77··on Windows 11's Patch Tuesday nightmare gets worse
Interesting. I bought a brand new Windows Arm machine the other day that was DOA: It booted with the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME message. I brought it back to Microcenter and exchanged it and the replacement works fine. I wonder if that machine was just updated at the factory before it shipped...

I'm a longtime Microsoft fanboy, but even I wait a couple of weeks before updating anything, unless there's an actual problem I need the fix for.

It's not your fault. It's California's fault for tolerating a culture of criminality.

fortran77··on Tesla kills Autopilot, locks lane-keeping behind $99/month fee
> Cameras wired into an internet connected car is the #1 reason why I will never buy a car like a Tesla.

Well then, this isn't the car for you. For many other people the safety features are important. I wouldn't mind if every car had a camera that made sure the driver was paying attention and didn't fall asleep.

fortran77··on Tesla kills Autopilot, locks lane-keeping behind $99/month fee
The latest version of FSD is amazing. We have it on our Plaids (2024 and 2026 models) and I probably only actually "drive" 5% of the time. There's a camera to see if you're paying attention to the road, so no longer any need to keep your hands on the wheel. It'll start from a parking space and go all the way into my house and back into the garage.

Of course, I don't trust it as much as I trust Waymo's system, and I'm very careful when using it in rain or fog...

fortran77··on Ask HN: COBOL devs, how are AI coding affecting your work?
Very little. A lot of Fortran today is converting old Fortran to Python+Numpy or Matlab. I've tried Claude and Copilot and it's pretty sketchy on this. I do use it for "print" statement formatting, etc.
