forlorn_mammoth··on New Mexico court orders Meta to pay $567m over harms to children’s mental health
It is very interesting to compare tiktok in China to the US.

> In an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes,” a tech expert stated that the U.S. version of TikTok — a Chinese-owned social media platform — is different than the Chinese version of the app, comparing the two experiences to opium and spinach.

This sounds a bit more advanced than

> They just figured out what you like to watch and showed you more similar stuff.

forlorn_mammoth··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
question is _why_ are you bringing it on your run?

the OP says they want their run to be time away from the phone. Not just because it is too difficult to carry physically.

Ok, you don't want to fork out for another device just for running, but why do you need a device at all? And what if it is those "needs" that the OP is trying to get away from.

To have a small window of time when you are free from all the damn devices.

forlorn_mammoth··on U.S. economy lost 23,000 jobs in July, a sudden reversal

forlorn_mammoth··on Cops Used Flock to Track a Man Across State Lines for a Pretextual Weed Search
The two hang together. You campaign in your state to legalize something. Some other state, where you have very little influence, goes the other way.

It isn't just cannabis.

what if the law categorizes abortion as felony/murder?

what if the law categorized certain types of sexual behavior as felony?

> I don't think a few years is enough to erase all trace of human intervention

Appreciate you stating your assumptions.

you might be interested in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World_Without_Us

> The World Without Us is a 2007 non-fiction book about what would happen to the natural and built environment if humans suddenly disappeared... it outlines, for example, how cities and houses would deteriorate, how long man-made artifacts would last, and how remaining lifeforms would evolve. Weisman concludes that residential neighborhoods would become forests within 500 years

forlorn_mammoth··on That time when I failed the Microsoft interview
> an interviewer can't confirm basic knowledge of data structures and algorithms

agreed. However, as I read the parent's post, they did not immediately see that DFS was an acronym for a basic algorithm. Given their implied background in computer security, a field littered with thousands of abbreviations (very few of which are basic algorithms) it is understandable that they needed a minute to see what DFS meant.

I could alternately ask a number of python developers if they were familiar with Javascript object notation, and cause a panic because they aren't familiar with javascript. Interviews are stressful. If your field always call it 'json' or 'a dict', you might not immediately make the connection.

forlorn_mammoth··on So you want to use plants to reduce CO₂
wholesale destruction of almost every biome. Overfishing (where 'fish' means anything that swims) with methods that destroy both the fish and the ecosystem-- have you ever considered what a trawler net destroys as it is dragged over the bottom of the seabed?

And now deep-sea mining.

Didn't we also create a very large internal jobs program to 'enforce immigration law'?

instead of creating a very large internal jobs program to build/repair fundamental infrastructure?

Such a waste. The ROI from 'better roads' is massive.

forlorn_mammoth··on 2x, not 10x: coding with LLMs in 2026
Wait, how about an infinite speedup? A friend of mine couldn't code, and now he can. So he is infinity-x better at coding thanks to LLMS!

Take that, you mere 10x-ers! Your days are toast!

Scholarly work, not preachy.

by "Doug Metzger finished his Ph.D. in literature in 2011. His chief scholarly interest, following his dissertation work, continues to be 19th-century realism and postbellum American philosophy."

forlorn_mammoth··on It's getting harder to focus every day
I read the metaphor differently. Doesn't invalidate your view, and I see that your view better captures the day to day experience.

I read the author as saying that his mind is being fracked, with all the implicit destruction that operation can cause, so that others can extract something from him. Yeah, I see that the analogy breaks down, because the extractors are after attention not dopamine (we're the ones who get the dopamine).

forlorn_mammoth··on Patreon laying off 20% of staff
From the article

> Graduates take an average of 5.6 months to land a job in the UK. This is almost 2 months longer than the national average

> breed much more easily.

Humans seem to be forgetting this step. Birthrates are down

forlorn_mammoth··on Why do you suck at juggling now?
sorry you experience it as demotivating. I think this is because your expectation of who has what responsibility is not aligned with workplace expectations.

The thing is, your manager has to fill in some paperwork and other admin processes to get you that raise. The manager is probably willing to do that work for you.

You can make this easier for them by helping them fill in that template. Making your manager's job easier IS part of your job, especially making it easier for them to get you a raise.

So yes, the main part of your job is to do the work explicitly assigned to you. And another part of your job is making sure that the work you've done is easily legible to the company.

family/friends relationships have other 'rules'/courtesies.

1 minute < 99 seconds.

forlorn_mammoth··on Show HN: Analog Watch
> Technology has advanced enough that analog clocks have joined polaroid cameras and vinyl records

assumption digital 'more advanced' than analog.

unclear. How digital more 'advanced'? Is regression, not advance.

Analog watch. See gap between minute hand and start of meeting. See gap get smaller. Instant.

Colleague in different time zone? See hour hand -3 steps, faster than "14 - 3 is 11". If digital even have 24 hr time, many no.

Teach kids. Analog visible, easy to read, child can see. Child can turn hands on wooden clock, manipulate. Now plus 1 hour, now plus 1.5 hours. Move long hand forward 1 rotation, 1.5 rotations.

Digital? Teach kids "now plus 90 minutes" digital? Hard math. now plus 90 is now (hour) plus 1 and now (minute) plus 30. Teach kids "now minus 10". Does hour change? Why hour change? why now hour different from now minute? daddy daddy what about now seconds? All abstract, cannot touch. Daddy why move hour number first?

Digital. 1 on microwave less than 99. Where else in world 1 < 99 makes sense? Digital time math crazy.

I appreciate you being upfront about the depth of your knowledge.

Regenerative farming and/or permaculture offer ways to run industrial-scale agriculture without the monoculture. See i.e. https://peercommunityjournal.org/articles/10.24072/pcjournal...

Another innovation I see is the use of "crop tunnels" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polytunnel) to greatly extend the growing season in colder climates (another poster mentioned "Ohio"), and/or better control evaporation.

forlorn_mammoth··on Meta loses bid to dismiss US states' claims that FB, Instagram addict children
Wait, you seriously believe the point of all entertainment is addiction?

As in, the only form of entertainment that society should (or does) offer should be specifically designed to trigger as much addictive behavior as possible?

I can see why a person, looking at our current world, might think that. Hello Dopamine Fracking.

But is that the world we want? It certainly is not the world that existed before modern extractive capitalism started turning to extracting from the people it is supposed to serve.

Fortunately, capitalism is more efficient that state/centralized planning, so capitalism is doing a better job of turning us into their farm animals than lords ever could do for their serfs.

forlorn_mammoth··on Mag 7 starting to underperform [pdf]
I respect your humility, and agree that you have an insight.

what I am curious about is how you would think about valuing these companies? Let's take it for a given that they are data and capital flywheels, and that this flywheel driven growth will continue for the next 100 years.

And say the valuation based on this measure says the company should be worth X today and X_y = X(growth rate per year)(y years) in y years (yes, I know we should use exponents not multiplication, but that's hard to render in this text editor).

and the price today is P.

What is the ratio of P to X? What is the ratio of P to X_y?

If P today is greater than X_y in 5 years, do you still buy it?
