forgotAgain··on Humanoid construction robot installs drywall
Ha, ha and sand it smooth.
forgotAgain··on Ask HN: What was the best decision you made in your career?
I was working for a company that was doing fantastically well but my salary increases and % bonus were in the low single digits. I negotiated a 50% raise. The extra money allowed me to save and invest for the future.
forgotAgain··on The Cost of Developers
My experience is that developers are hardcore in their opinion on Microsoft: they are either all in or have no interest in dealing with them.

I don't see Microsoft being able to move developers with this purchase.

forgotAgain··on America’s Teens Are Choosing YouTube Over Facebook
FB was cool to teens when it was limited to college students. Scarcity is gone and coolness left with it.
forgotAgain··on America’s Teens Are Choosing YouTube Over Facebook
Events would be a nice service for Twitter to move into.
forgotAgain··on Ask HN: Have you successfully done a career do-over, and how did you do it?
I interviewed at a Fortune 100 tech company when I was 35. The head of the development center declared to me that "people don't come here to retire". I was hired because they needed a niche skill that I possessed.
forgotAgain··on Altered Carbon – All the DNA of great science-fiction with some missing links
Meh. Too often falls back on nudity to make up for failure to develop a more immersive environment. Said in another way, they used nudity to make up for a small CGI budget.
forgotAgain··on Visual Studio Live Share
Just wondering if there are any plans to make this available to management for viewing workers surreptitiously?

I would expect this to be an enterprise request almost immediately.

forgotAgain··on Google is building an anti-Amazon alliance, and Target is the latest to join
What a difference a word can make:

This post heading:

Google is building an anti-Amazon alliance, and Target is the latest to join

and the source article:

Google is essentially building an anti-Amazon alliance, and Target is the latest to join

The one word changes the article from providing an interpretation of a set of facts to a declaration of a proven fact. Since Recode has some gravitas the difference is even greater than if it was a blog mill churning out click bait.

forgotAgain··on Gluon – Deep Learning API from AWS and Microsoft
Partnerships between tech companies is not that unusual. Now if it happens to amount to anything significant that would be odd.
forgotAgain··on Disabling the Intel Management Engine
They don't have a need to spy on everyone, just a compulsion to.
forgotAgain··on The U.S. is risking an academic brain drain
Seems more like the tub is overflowing rather than draining.
forgotAgain··on Robocalls Flooding Your Cellphone? Here’s How to Stop Them
The only way this stops is for the FCC to direct backbone providers to block non-US IP addresses that flood people with these calls.
forgotAgain··on 300M Freely Downloadable Pwned Passwords
Send it in a certified letter. Address it to the CEO and send certified CC's to the FDIC, CIO, and a reporter for a local or national tech newspaper column.

It may sound archaic but you have to raise the visibility if you're concerned about changing the banks behavior.

forgotAgain··on Gollvm from Google
Or Precious: the go llvm compiler.
forgotAgain··on New Bridges Rise in New York
Probably a few million people who would love to push that button. Myself included. One of those places in the city where you're guaranteed to sit in traffic no matter what time of day on night you approach it.
forgotAgain··on H-1B visas mainly go to Indian outsourcing firms
A constant theme for support of H-1B's is that they supply the US with an irreplaceable resource for starting new technical companies.

Despite this I have not heard reference of any individual who came to this country on a H-1B visa to work for an Indian outsourcing company who later participated in a significant successful startup. Honest question, does anyone know an example of this having occurred?

forgotAgain··on Space Buckets: DIY Indoor Gardening with LED and Arduinos
The science has come a long way from the incandescent light in my dorm closet.
forgotAgain··on Safari 10.1
I don't know about that. I see Tim Cook as being closer to Steve Ballmer than Steve Jobs. Operations vs Vision.
forgotAgain··on Google AMP Is Not a Good Thing
This is a classic embrace, extend, extinguish.
forgotAgain··on Renewing Medium’s focus
Maybe it's not focus but quality of content.

When I see that a story is from medium I don't bother with it. History has taught me that once in a while something there might be of value but mostly it's very light reading and not worth the time to explore.

forgotAgain··on Wazer introduces the first desktop water-jet cutter
Since the product doesn't actually exist yet they should perhaps say Plans rather than Introduces.
forgotAgain··on Microsoft Teams, the new chat-based workspace in Office 365
Most of Microsoft's income comes from businesses. They already use a subscription service called Software Assurance. That's the income they will need to replace.
forgotAgain··on Microsoft Teams, the new chat-based workspace in Office 365
For now it is. If service income is to replace on premise licenses the price will have to go up.
forgotAgain··on Microsoft Teams, the new chat-based workspace in Office 365
If they offered it a la carte I would be a lot more interested. Our company is just getting over Microsoft hegemony. I'll never be part of getting back into that by buying Microsoft services that are intertwined.
forgotAgain··on Health Law Tax Penalty? I’ll Take It, Millions Say
Twenty to fifty years from now historians are going to reference the ACA as a case study of early 21st century American government:

1) hyper partisan political process

2) special interest control of the content of laws

3) release of information by the government used as a method to manage the electorate rather than inform

4) front loaded benefits with back-ended payments

5) political class taking credit for the good stuff and leaving if for others to clean up the mess

Generally speaking, all aspects of American government in this place and time are reflected in the ACA. All aspects share the same sustainability issues.

forgotAgain··on Response from Google Tech Lead, Re: “Google May Be Stealing Your Mobile Traffic”
If it was Verizon or AT&T or some other ISP doing this there would be outrage. But I guess it's cool if it's Google.
forgotAgain··on Introducing .NET Standard
From the OP: ".NET Standard is a set of APIs that all .NET platforms have to implement. This unifies the .NET platforms and prevents future fragmentation.

Sounds like baseline API that will be present on all .Net <foo>.

forgotAgain··on How to build a robot that “sees” with $100 and TensorFlow
Sorry for the off topic but is anyone else getting very high cpu usage from O'Reilly websites? Any known resolution or work around?

With Chrome developer tools I see one error: "Uncaught SecurityError: Failed to read the 'localStorage' property from 'Window': Access is denied for this document."

forgotAgain··on Win32 and .NET desktop apps can now be published in the Windows Store
So then UWP is basically dead for 99+% of it's use cases.

For mobile: use Xamarin.

For desktop: use win32/.net so you can support pre August 2016 versions of Windows.

For Xbox and ARM where you also need support for desktop and mobile devices: use UWP.
