foolfoolz··on We Write Code by Hand
if you write a prompt, and see the code and edit it by writing another prompt, you the human wrote that code. you may not have typed the keyboard for each character in the code. but the llm did not write it all for you. this is the same as a pair programmer, 2 authors

foolfoolz··on A Cop Searched 19,000 Flock Cameras Across 1,558 Cities. His Reason: 'LMAO'
flock isn’t going away. this feels like the 1990s web that grew into a more regulated system with safeguards. flock or a (more advanced) replacement are going to be part of policing in the us forever
foolfoolz··on Java 27
java is a great language for server side projects. it is actively maintained, the biggest issues with it have JEPs, and it’s very friendly to AI authors
foolfoolz··on Mistral raises €3B
not the good jobs. not the jobs that were comparing to mistral level equivalents in the US. i haven’t had metered PTO since 2015 and everyone i know is the same
foolfoolz··on Mistral raises €3B
unlimited does not mean unlimited because then you would take 365 days off each year. it means you don’t accrue or worry about a balance. i work at an “unlimited” company i see most engineers taking 25-30 days of PTO. it’s a bell curve and there’s outliers on either side but 4-5 weeks/year is quite reasonable
foolfoolz··on Mistral raises €3B
pto/vacation, healthcare, and unemployment differences between US and EU mean nothing to high skilled tech workers in the US

1. all good tech jobs in the US have unlimited pto

2. all good tech jobs in the US have good healthcare plans that will continue after being let go until you get a new job

3. you will be able to claim unemployment, but a good tech company in the US will also give you a severance

foolfoolz··on I co-founded Burning Man. The festival has lost its soul
it’s still the city. the org might be run in a lame way but any time you get too involved in something you see another layer of politics and favoritism and helping friends out that just seems wrong. most people going aren’t at that level and it’s fine. you’ll still have a good time (if you want to)
foolfoolz··on Students prefer Gemini over ChatGPT and Claude for AI essays in blind tests
when i use gemini i ask it to stop asking me questions, to stop showing me media and just use text, and be concise in output. with these directions it’s pretty useful
foolfoolz··on 50k Boat Names
i don’t think this changes much. ownership is most common for the middle class. which makes perfect sense.

- if you’re rich you don’t need to own a boat, you can spend more per day to rent if you want to use one.

- the cost optimization of owning makes each day using it cheaper, even if it takes more time or space to store it. so those with less money that want to use a boat will buy it

for example renting a boat all day for use on lake tahoe might run you $2,000 to rent. it might cost you $300 in gas if you own the boat. you can tell yourself youre a boat owner now and get 10 days on the lake each year for $3,000 instead of $20,000

totally agree. gaming is a passion industry, the fans are vocal and passionate, but also fleeting. and the vast majority of gamers today are digital only anyway
foolfoolz··on Costco is the anti-Amazon
“costco delivery” is basically amazon with a higher minimum spend and no perishables. “costco same day” is delivery costco via instacart, with adjusted prices. i use costco delivery a lot because a good portion of what i buy there can be delivered with it
foolfoolz··on Beyond All Reason (Free Total Annihilation Inspired RTS)
FAF has a good community. it’s clear some people are better than others and you won’t get yelled at for not knowing what to do and can ask for help. the problem with FAF isn’t community, it’s technical. the game and connectivity are so painful that it might take you an hour to get into a game. and then you play 30 mins, get to the core part of the game, and someone drops. it’s a 10/10 experience when it’s good but it might be good 10% of the time. you’ll frequently see comments that it’s a lobby simulator

unfortunately FAF is an evolved TA with better mechanics than BAR. BAR is just modern graphics TA. which just feels old and outdated to me after spending so much time playing FAF which is better across every angle

one bedroom (and living alone) is a luxury and always has been
foolfoolz··on What even is food authenticity? Why we guard carbonara, and flatten chicken rice
i think there’s another component to this that most food sucked. your daily food was probably bad because it had few seasonings. it was likely starch (rice/bread), and stew. you don’t need a recipe for soup, it’s boil water and throw in whatever vegetables you have on hand. maybe meat if you had it
foolfoolz··on Noise infusion banned from statistical products published by Census Bureau
i have such a hard time reconciling stuff like this:

> The census bureau decided to adopt differential privacy for the 2020 Census

and:

> The consequences will be dire for utility or for privacy, and possibly both. It's hard to understate this point: future statistical releases will either be useless compared to past ones, or they will be incredibly unsafe

so we took the census for centuries before this point, and it was “ok.” and for the last census only we added some privacy items. but if we remove just one of those filters, we are in “dire” circumstances? but there were no privacy features before. so we’re actually still much better off than we were for hundreds of years before this.

this makes it feel like an emotional overblown problem

foolfoolz··on My Students Can't Read
we have a school system that rewards graduation and punishes punishment. our public school especially is geared around progressing the lowest common denominator forward at all costs. private schools can run how they want, public schools are paid to do 2 things: 1. get butts in seats 2. have kids move up when the year is over

foolfoolz··on Claude Platform on AWS
there’s a top level feature in aws for investors to give out credits of like $120k of AWS spend during funding rounds. there’s min commits of spend for cheaper prices (RI). funneling costs and invoicing though aws has real benefits. aws spend monitoring is literally a sub industry with billion dollar players
foolfoolz··on The map that keeps Burning Man honest
there’s an interesting side to this that better cell coverage, starlink, and others have made burning man more phone friendly. purists will say don’t bring a phone. or the event only works because no one has phones that work

but the event isn’t possible to run without internet. DPW has wifi at every station. internet has become a core planning and organization tool
