fooblaster··on Writing Efficient C++ Code (2013)
How? you can write exactly the same low level code today.
fooblaster··on On caring for user data: NeoVim caused Vim undo files to be deleted
Talk about poor duty of care to users... been using him for 20 years and I have to enable it in my vimrc to take effect. So stupid. Why would I want this to be off?

Such amazing design...

" Enable persistent undo set undofile

fooblaster··on On caring for user data: NeoVim caused Vim undo files to be deleted
How does one use persistent undo in vim?
fooblaster··on Show HN: Agentic CUDA Kernel Optimizer
Can someone explain why this isn't better accomplished through a single prompt to Claude code or codex? I don't think I understand.
fooblaster··on Anthropic classifiers prohibit kernel development
Has anyone hit this? the language is so vague I'm concerned this is going to stop my non-LLM cuda work.
fooblaster··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
It's open ended to solicit the advice of anyone who cares. But, given it didn't work, 80 gallon capacity / 2 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms
fooblaster··on We Must Pace the Frontier
The outcome is the same!
fooblaster··on We must pace the frontier
He's working on the monster slime mold! He's head monster slime mold grower! how can you take these people seriously?
fooblaster··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
can anyone recommend the best heat pump water heater for the us market?
fooblaster··on Tesla killing Solar Roof is leaving installers with six-figure losses
The entire premise is stupid. Panels need to be large to have reduced install costs and wiring costs. Install costs dominate solar install pricing in the United states. It is far far cheaper to install a new roof and giant solar installation than to go with a solar roof. It's just a broken concept at the very start.
fooblaster··on GPT-6 Astra
please tell us why
fooblaster··on Mark Zuckerberg's Social Reckoning
Unfortunately, it really depends who you consider a journalist. With internet advertising destroying journalism as a revenue source, as anyone can really say anything about who they are
fooblaster··on AI Can Now Design Functional Viruses. Should We Worry?
Nukes also cannot kill everyone. Nuclear winter was proven to not be based on solid evidence, the earth remains very habitable after all nukes have gone off.
fooblaster··on Auto-research with codex: How I achieved a 232x Faster Kernel
You can't exceed roofline performance on hardware. There is an performance cap you can hit. This recursive self improvement stuff lets you be closer to the pareto frontier, but the idea that it is leading to some exponential growth is a total pipe dream.
fooblaster··on DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813
is there a standard pattern for this? Like spawn an agent for each technique to try?
fooblaster··on DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813
Can you explain how you used 12 billion tokens to do useful work?
fooblaster··on Plug-In Solar Panels Starting to Sprout in U.S. Backyards
Is is actively done at scale? I suspect not given the amounts of batteries being installed.
fooblaster··on Plug-In Solar Panels Starting to Sprout in U.S. Backyards
well, California currently is guaranteeing that benefit to nem 1 people for twenty years. I would much rather penalize those people than make everyone else pay a subsidy to them, as we are currently doing. They should bare the risk of their investment and get paid market rate.

My issue today is .. I cannot be paid market rate for giving back to the grid, even in hours when California needs the power.

fooblaster··on Plug-In Solar Panels Starting to Sprout in U.S. Backyards
this seems like it makes sense. how do you keep the dispensed water from being too hot? is there such a mechanism?
fooblaster··on Plug-In Solar Panels Starting to Sprout in U.S. Backyards
I think you had me until you mentioned long term storage. How do you store significant amounts of energy across seasons? I'm just not aware of anything other than pumped hydro power that has anywhere near the cap as capacity to do such a thing.
fooblaster··on Plug-In Solar Panels Starting to Sprout in U.S. Backyards
related tangent: install costs of batteries and solar in California are insane. I recently had battery and solar installed, and labor and permitting were 60% the cost of the system. Systems without either of those markedly bring down the cost.
fooblaster··on Plug-In Solar Panels Starting to Sprout in U.S. Backyards
Yes, I think the key thing here to to not guarantee that pricing like they did in California over decades. Yes, the benefit will eventually be reduced. But that is considered success is it not?
fooblaster··on Plug-In Solar Panels Starting to Sprout in U.S. Backyards
The thing we should be incentivizing people to use here are batteries, in the exact same configuration. We do not in many places, need more solar power generation, but we need devices that slurp down power at 2pm and dump it out in the three hours after sundown. Utilities should be paying anyone who dumps power to the grid at peak post-sundown demand hours, so that it is a no-brainer to install such a thing.
fooblaster··on Apple says more ex-employees may have taken confidential data to OpenAI
It is comical to think that AI has developed enough to replace the phone. This project is doomed without a protracted legal battle.
fooblaster··on Darktable
Do any of the tools other than Lightroom produce hdr photo formats, like jpeg or avif with hdr gain maps
fooblaster··on The Kimi K3 Moment
Yes, anthropic and openai have really been brought to their knees and ipos cancelled because of the legal consequences of obtaining their training data.
fooblaster··on The early History of the Singular Value Decomposition (1993) [pdf]
What sort of algorithms do you run on SAR images?
fooblaster··on The early History of the Singular Value Decomposition (1993) [pdf]
classic! Used the same thing to solve for the rigid transform of an April tag for a calibration problem years ago.
fooblaster··on The early History of the Singular Value Decomposition (1993) [pdf]
what work are you doing in computer vision that isn't entirely ML these days?
fooblaster··on The bottleneck might be the air in the room
This is kind of a bummer. I have a nice co2 meter. another reason to be skeptical of everything.
