foobaw··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2019)
AppZen | Santa Clara| Full-time | ONSITE https://jobs.lever.co/appzen/

Roles Open: - Product Managers - Machine Learning - Data Science - Software Engineers

Feel free to contact me directly to for any questions at appzenmanager at gmail.com and I can refer you directly so I can help your application get more visibility!

We are growing fast and have a lot of challenges in machine learning, NLP, data science, engineering, infrastructure and more! We're hiring across multiple roles (even non-engineering).

foobaw··on South Korea and Sweden are the most innovative countries in the world
I feel like the exclusion of the US is the norm in a lot of these rankings just to have that shock factor.
foobaw··on Amazon has forced attrition rates (someone has to go every year)
Netflix and Facebook definitely have something similar too especially for newer grads (although the former rarely hires new grads). Amazon just does it in the worst way possible.
foobaw··on FaceTime bug lets you hear audio of person you are calling before they pick up
Agreed - looks like something very simple to add as a test-case. If not manual, an automated QA process could've easily caught this if it was even remotely robust enough.

The steps to reproduce is trivial so I'm shocked.

foobaw··on US shutdown: Flight delays caused by staff shortages
What an embarrassment as a country.
foobaw··on Snap CFO Tim Stone Is Resigning
Is Snap actually dying? I recall there were similar news for Apple, Facebook(debatable on their current state) etc, but they rebounded back up.

Maybe this is the time to buy low and make it big (when everyone is doubting them). It'll be interesting to see.

foobaw··on Analyzing the chords of 1300 popular songs for patterns
Surprised to not see more jazz chords like #9#5.
foobaw··on Samsung Phone Users Perturbed to Find They Can't Delete Facebook
This is fear-mongering. The app is a stub and it doesn't do any tracking. I used to work at an OEM - this is just an agreement that Samsung and Facebook signed.
foobaw··on Facebook says new bug allowed apps access to private photos of up to 6.8M users
Where are the technical details on what the bug was and how it was possible? Shouldn't this be disclosed?
foobaw··on Global, U.S. Growth in Smartphone Growth Starts to Decline
I doubt this will make it. hardware certifications are absurdly difficult and costly.
foobaw··on Alphazero crushes Stockfish in 1,000 game match
How did AlphaZero lose 6 games? Do we have an analysis of those? I'd love to see what happened.
foobaw··on Samsung used my DSLR photo to fake their phone’s “portrait mode”
This definitely requires someone that was lazy independently doing this. This definitely does not reflect a common practice that Samsung does. Someone high up will be heavily punished for this.
foobaw··on Why is 2 * (i * i) faster than 2 * i * i in Java?
truly full-stack!
foobaw··on Chess World Championship: Stockfish live-analyzing game 7
Another nail-biting draw!
foobaw··on Suneung: The day silence falls over South Korea
You need to understand this is ingrained into their culture. There's no reason for them to step back and think "we should be ashamed" because it's part of your life. It sucks but change will no be easy.
foobaw··on Suneung: The day silence falls over South Korea
The difficulty is because most of the sentences are written in the passive voice. Readability is also a skillset and this one is very low.
foobaw··on Uber’s Restaurant Empire
In my area, a lot of them are either free or $1.99, $2.99. (It will vary by demand though).

I think my threshold is $2.99 - in some scenarios when I'm extremely sick.

foobaw··on Teenager beats Tetris game older than he is to become world champion [video]
I consider them two different games and I've been a member of Hard Drop for a long time.

I used to have Top 100 records on both Sprint (sub 50 seconds) and Ultra, and one day, confidently challenged a top-Classic player to a classic game and got crushed. So much respect to classic players.

foobaw··on UBeam CEO Meredith Perry steps aside amidst B2B pivot
I used to have friends that worked here and told me horror stories about the CEO. I hope this technology works in the future in a reasonable amount of time without such a horrendous leader because it is quite an awesome concept if done properly.
foobaw··on The highest paid workers in Silicon Valley are product managers (2016)
Considering PMs are considered mini-CEOs (which I actually don't agree with), this has some reasoning behind it. As a startup founder, knowing what to build is one of the hardest things ever and having a knack at this is valuable.
foobaw··on Hire by Google: Applicant tracking system and recruiting software (2017)
Given that there are dominating ATS products like Lever, Greenhouse, etc, this will likely just quietly shut-down in a few years.
foobaw··on GoogleMeetRoulette: Joining random meetings
how much was the bounty for something like this?
foobaw··on Bytedance said to be valued at over $75B in new round
I read once that they pay over 2M+ USD as an annual salary to entry level employees. I'm sure they're exceptional and talented, but still crazy to think about.
foobaw··on 'Super Mario Bros.' speedrunner hits nearly inhuman 4:55 world record
Can't wait until I see new exploits!
foobaw··on Android Studio 3.2
Do the emulator and compiler still require SSDs and 16GB+ RAM to be usable? I love Android Studio but it used to always feel very heavy-weight.
foobaw··on Google’s revamped Cloud Source Repositories in beta
Similar to OpenGrok, I'm assuming?
foobaw··on FanDuel not honoring bet that would have paid over $82,000 due to line error
Eat the cost? Why doesn't Bill Gates just donate a few million dollars to every charity? Based on his net worth, that's not a lot. I think it's about setting the precedent.
foobaw··on Stripe Terminal – Programmable point of sale
how much fee is collected like this? Stripe Connect takes a fee, Stripe Terminal takes a fee, etc.
foobaw··on Subject: Airbnb (2011)
Love his passion. I know it's possible PG himself missed out on a startups by convincing people not to invest in a simialr way, but the fact that he's not afraid to express his opinion is just as useful.
foobaw··on Stripe Terminal – Programmable point of sale
Competition is good I guess...
