foobaw··on First place in Tetris 99 using computer vision, classical AI, a lot of free time
yes but this aligns with the initial statement in the post that top 1 doesn't happen as much and top 15 is more common.
foobaw··on Malaysia started mandating ISPs to redirect DNS queries to local servers
Very scary...
foobaw··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
I just want Apple to release RCS already
foobaw··on Sam Altman's knack for dodging bullets with a little help from bigshot friends
You're implying that you knew how to hire and identify smart architects and provided them the right vision to build a good building.

There wouldn't be a counterfactual in your hypothetical scenario, but I'm confident that the difference between someone that got lucky and hired "smart" architects versus a visionary doing the same task would be drastic.

Money can only get you so far.

foobaw··on DALL·E 3
I wonder how comparable this will be to MidJourney and I'm excited to try it out.
foobaw··on GitHub staff are required to use Teams by Sep 1, 2023
400,000+? I don't mean to question this but that's a crazy high number assuming it's not Amazon or Walmart.
foobaw··on The Tripitaka Koreana is the most successful large data transfer over time
Amazing!
foobaw··on Dear Chess World
I'm actually curious what the Chess.com statement would be - they seem to have some bombshell that's coming soon. Also curious how Hans' will react to all of this.
foobaw··on Former Japan PM Shinzo Abe Unconscious After Shooting; Man in Custody
we should all mourn this tragedy but do not paint this guy as a good man. He is a historical revisionist.
foobaw··on Email startup Superhuman lays off 22% of staff
people said that about Honey (just a chrome app store solo dev project) and look how much they got acquired for. Don't underestimate them.
foobaw··on Uber and Lyft’s new road: Fewer drivers, thrifty riders and jittery investors
I think we need to stop comparing Uber to Lyft. To me, this is more of a Lyft problem as Uber has diversified way more.
foobaw··on Nintendo Switch prevents downgrades by irreparably blowing its own fuses (2020)
Qualcomm did the same thing on their phones back in the days (known as QFUSE). Not sure about right now.
foobaw··on Tetr.io
there is no ARE and there's also a "0ARR" handling setting - so this is actually considered 0 input delay.
foobaw··on DoorDash will require all employees to deliver goods
I think the right approach for this is to make this program voluntary - not forced. If someone wants to learn more about customers, they can CHOOSE to do this. This just shows that DD doesn't trust their employees to care and have empathy.
foobaw··on Expensify S-1
Concur is painful to set-up but once it's done, it's not too bad
foobaw··on Facebook-owned sites were down
This is taking a longer time than expected for a company like Facebook - must be serious where a rollback isn't possible or trivial.
foobaw··on Ask HN: How did Google botch messaging/video/hangouts so badly?
reminds me of Google Wave
foobaw··on Google Plans to Cut Remote Workers’ Salaries by 25%
that sounds way more rare than most jobs
foobaw··on Google Plans to Cut Remote Workers’ Salaries by 25%
x-googlers are expensive. most companies can't afford them. They'd likely need to sell with stock options and IPO prospects
foobaw··on Netflix Fires Marketing Execs for Criticizing Bosses over Slack
It's unclear if these were private messages. It's possible these were posted on public channels. AFAIK, Slack doesn't allow companies/IT access to private messages unless there are legal implications.
foobaw··on My startup journey
A lot of ex-Stripe companies are destined for success
foobaw··on Mysterious fast radio bursts come in two distinct flavours
Will we ever find out what this actually means in our lifetime?
foobaw··on How I raised a $5.1M seed as a first-time, female, solo founder for a biotech co
What an excellent write-up. So much to take notes on.
foobaw··on “About one-third of Basecamp employees accepted buyouts today”
I'm guessing more people will leave in the next few weeks.
foobaw··on Google will stop using Oracle’s finance software and adopt SAP instead
Google could probably do it if they REALLY wanted to. But to handle all the small nuances and complexities is not trivial. An example - larger companies will never use Expensify because of a lot of features that it lacks compared to Concur.
foobaw··on Google will stop using Oracle’s finance software and adopt SAP instead
Doubt it's Netsuite. Netsuite is mostly for smaller companies.
foobaw··on LG is getting out of the mobile phone business
LG should've gone out years ago. Hindsight is 20/20 but it just wasn't worth it after G6 in my opinion. Obviously, G4 was when they should've really stopped but that's much harder to predict.
foobaw··on Lambda School can't catch a break from upset students
I feel like this is a problem of not being about to please everyone. Someone will always complain about something. I'm sure there's a flip-side to this post of people finding a huge amount of success from Lambda School (that are less likely to post about their positive experience).

I don't disagree that Lambda School may have problems but they're still young and have a lot to improve. Just from my personal anecdote but I've worked with people from bootcamps (notably Hack Reactor), and they've been fantastic so I believe that they're (bootcamps) definitely capable of educating people for success.

foobaw··on Instacart raises $265M at a $39B valuation
how does this impact their IPO?
foobaw··on Samsung now updates Android for longer than Google does
As someone that worked at an OEM, updating used to be a huge hassle and required a lot of R&D work. Project Treble definitely simplified this effort and I'm glad this is enabling and making life better for users.
