Urgent? Not for you. This is like that old joke “If you owe a bank thousands, you have a problem; owe a bank a billion, the bank has a problem”
fnordfnordfnord··on Police Have Used License Plate Readers at Least 14x to Stalk Romantic Interests

They're huge. Also, it's never a secret where they're being sent. That's the whole point of an aircraft carrier.
fnordfnordfnord··on A new California law says all operating systems need to have age verification
I'm just catching up on the subject myself but, here's a news article:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-07-11/age-verification-sear...

It appears that the Australian and UK versions don't go as far as what seems to have been proposed in the US.

fnordfnordfnord··on A new California law says all operating systems need to have age verification
There’s a concerted global effort to push this legislation. It’s also been proposed in Colorado and, some version of it’s been passed in the UK and Australia.
fnordfnordfnord··on Breaking down a record-setting day on the Texas grid
Austin Energy? There aren't many providers that I am aware of in Texas that have variable rates.

fnordfnordfnord··on Stuck at sea for years, a sailor's plight highlights a surge in ship abandonment
At the time of abandonment, the ship may not be seaworthy. If it requires more repairs or fuel than the crew can afford from their own resources, then they cannot move the ship.
fnordfnordfnord··on FDA Designates MM120 (LSD) Breakthrough Therapy for Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Same as Ketamine. Ketamine therapy is available now but, the cost very high so, it is practically unavailable to most.
fnordfnordfnord··on Solar Storm Rendering
Reminds me of a game that I played on Apple II a very long time ago. Can't remember the name but, it was a very basic two player shoot artillery at each other game and I loved it.
fnordfnordfnord··on LoRA from scratch: implementation for LLM finetuning
I thought this was going to be some neat software defined radio stuff. Still quite interesting though.
fnordfnordfnord··on US lawyer who put Big Tobacco on trial takes aim at sports betting
I notice that you don't have a response for 1. I understand, because, it's very challenging to solve real problems like preventing all gambling over the internet. In which case, it's easier to regulate it for fairness than to have it remain underground and completely unregulated; that's not good enough for some people though.
fnordfnordfnord··on US lawyer who put Big Tobacco on trial takes aim at sports betting
1. How do you propose to prevent it? 2. Do you want to live in a free society, or do you want a lot of regulation over your behavior?

If you start letting moralizers regulate everyone's behavior "for their own good" where do you stop?

fnordfnordfnord··on FBI director admits they rarely have probable cause for using NSA collections
I don't believe it. I've been scolded so many times, including by users here, that the FBI would never. There must be some misunderstanding!
fnordfnordfnord··on The boy who stole Half-Life 2 (2011)
>Then, he stole and published the hl2 source

Do you disagree with the article or did you just not believe it? Because, Gembe denied publishing the source code and there was no evidence that Gembe is the one who published it.

fnordfnordfnord··on RFC 9446 Reflections on Ten Years Past the Snowden Revelations
>The vast, vast majority of collected data is discarded without having ever been read.

Notably, you're omitting anything about the role that intelligence collection and Parallel Construction play in prosecuting Americans for crimes which have nothing at all to do with national security, and which they have no possible way to defend themselves against the use of that information.

Can't wait to rid myself of Autodesk dependency.
fnordfnordfnord··on Twitter now requires an account to view tweets
I've been rate limited all morning and all I do is casually browse and occasionally retweet, with infrequent replies. Something is wrong over there.
fnordfnordfnord··on Radioactive spill near Richland WA worse than expected
Sr90 emits 1MeV beta. Very very bad if you ingest it but easy to protect yourself if you're near it.

The Cs137 is a lot harder to be around.

And we don't want either in the water or food chain.

fnordfnordfnord··on CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg
20 years ago was kind of a sweet spot for diesel automobile fuel efficiency. Emissions were terrible though. Then they tried to clean up the tail pipe emissions and lost most of the efficiency gains.
fnordfnordfnord··on Xanax and Adderall Access Is Being Blocked by Secret Drug Limits
Pharmacists and pharmacy techs are given "training" on how to identify supposed fraudulent sales. e.g. if your hair is long or you otherwise look like a person who would manufacturer amphetamines (whatever that looks like) they won't sell it to you.

So, congrats to you for looking like a fine upstanding person and not like a clandestine drugs manufacturer.
