flinmaster··on Ask HN: Would you hire someone who thinks work-life balance is important?
I wouldn't hire someone who didn't think it was important.
flinmaster··on Why Would Anyone Bundle Cable Again?
Sports. I want to watch my local MLB team. Almost every game is broadcast locally, but just a few on Steaming. Other than that I can't think of a reason.
flinmaster··on Ask HN: Help me understand if my site is secure
Nice. Two features I miss. 1) I often need to make just lower or upper case passwords. 2) I also need hex passwords (0-9, A-Z).
flinmaster··on [dead]
100% agree.
flinmaster··on Ask HN: About to Be Acquired by MSFT
I didn't sell my company to MSFT but I imagine it is the same. There will be a period where everything is great and you feel like you have freedom then that will end and you will be at their whims.

My advice is: day-one stop thinking about it as your company and stop caring. Do what needs to be done to help your employees and to make the transition to MSFT a good one and then leave. I lost a great deal of money because I cared and stay around. If I had sold my stock at the first chance I could and left I'd be a millionaire many time over. I lost it all because I made dumb decisions that involved caring about my company when it wasn't mine anymore..

flinmaster··on My tech lead is an idiot
When I'm interviewing people, if they start to bad mouth a past employer I immediately write them off. There are ways to bring up issues with a past employer that isn't bad mouthing. If a candidate doesn't say anything about a past employer, I know that it wasn't good and respect they don't bad mouth.
flinmaster··on Ask HN: It's 2018 – why aren't all text messages delivered over the internet?
Travel to rural or out of the way places in the US and you will see why. Internet is not as common as you think. Also, at large events (sports, conventions, concerts) Internet can be next to impossible, but TXT messages get through.
flinmaster··on Why hasn't renting home as office space have not taken off in U.S?
Because most homes are not zoned for office space. Working at home is one thing, renting your house as an office is another. You'd quickly piss off your neighbors and draw the attention of the city.
flinmaster··on Ask HN: Who still develops in C++
Anyone who needs performance. Although, if you really need performance, you're using C, not C++. Game engines are all written in C/C++. All those languages like Python and Javascript are all written in C/C++.
flinmaster··on Ask HN: I've constantly changed companies. Would I be considered unreliable?
As someone that has run a company (several hundred employees) and hired a lot of people, I would say "yes". If you were someone I was interested in, I would certainly ask you about your job switching. If you told me you got bored and moved on, I'd be very reluctant to invest time in you, only to have you leave. If you're constantly bored, maybe you're looking for the wrong jobs.
