flakyfilibuster··on Ask HN: Is it crazy to ask for team specific interview at Amazon?
At this point I'd ask myself why I'd want to work for a company whichs interview process is so misaligned with my expectations... Why not look elsewhere?
flakyfilibuster··on Thank HN: Five months ago, I was feeling like a loser, now I am opposite
The negativity is totally warranted: OPs misguided believe in thinking that simply finding a new job will get rid of all his woes is worrisome. Furthermore the fact that a high percentage of commentators are encouraging his stance is counterproductive.

This is simplifying a complex situation, which OP should definitely seek professional guidance for before he finds himself in the same situation 5 months from now...

flakyfilibuster··on Tell HN: Job interview canceled due to looming recession
so ungrateful these devs...
flakyfilibuster··on Tell HN: The loneliness of a pretty good developer
In addition to this - having people "around" you - does not negate the fact, that you still can be lonely
flakyfilibuster··on Books Become Games
some great author, can't even spell 'movement'...
flakyfilibuster··on Steam: Half-Life 2 Hardware Survey (2004)
If we're talking Half-Life2 then one could argue, that it brings in a whole other dimension compared to the two games you mentioned: physics. Something that is almost absent in DE & T2 and has (afaik) no gameplay effect.
flakyfilibuster··on Steam: Half-Life 2 Hardware Survey (2004)
Not quite following the dumbed down story part. Crysis2 had Richard Morgan responsible for the broader story beats and it explored some quite interesting topics.
flakyfilibuster··on Ask HN: Books to read when you transform from SWE into SWE Management?
Lots of good recommendations in the thread.

I found this one to be pretty valuable: https://www.amazon.de/Difficult-Conversations-Discuss-What-M... (sorry, amazon link)

Because, obviously you're going to get into situation as a manager where you have to have difficult conversations.

flakyfilibuster··on Dwarf Fortress Steam Updates – Release Roadmap
no matter your opinion about the game itself, it's valid mentioning it as a passion project though
flakyfilibuster··on Signs Your Employees Think You Suck as a Manager
Ok, two year project manager here:

wow, just wow... this article strikes me as being written by a very insecure person, trying to bedazzle his/her 'underlings' with 'authority'

>> 1. They act like you're not there Oh my... pay attention to me! I'm important! Why don't you stand up and applaud me when I walk into the office! Seriously?

Respect by deeds, not appearance!

>> 2. They Don’t Keep You in the Loop Guess what, we hire professionals to do a specific job. If I can't trust them to handle their work on their own, I already failed beforehand as a manager. I want them to notify me when they have a problem they can't resolve themselves - all other matters, I trust my team 100%!

>> 3. They Don’t Play by the Rules Again - unless you haven't inherited a bad team from a previously bad manager - you failed BEFOREhand as a manager if people don't play by the rules. Also, rather contrived examples of someone not playing by the rules...

Really? Someone coming back later from lunch is the biggest issue you encountered as a manager?

Who gives a fuck?! Did that guy have a positive impact on the product / the team / the company during that day? Great!

In addition: "didn’t ask for the necessary approval when performing certain tasks for her role." ....insecure manager working in a corporate environment comment right there.

Things I've found to be helpful during my time as a manager: > Help people 'getting to done' > Listen to teams issues and try to resolve them > Have 'character' and lead by example > Help them to grow, as a person and an employee > Don't bullshit them, then they won't bullshit you > Be 'true'! Put your money where your mouth is

The rest will follow, even if you aren't the big 'Kahuna'.

PS: sorry, long comment and a lot of '' use :)
