firstSpeaker··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
Fun two years ahead!
firstSpeaker··on K8s Iceberg
It is very close to reality when it comes to running an actual critical workload.

The whole area out of the water and the first level under water is more like having some fun and playing with different concepts and maybe running something and showing everyone unaware of what the best is and make the say wow.

Then comes the reality of security, automation, management, governance, observability and that is when the project grind to halt or it turn into another one of the setups that leaks :).

firstSpeaker··on Show HN: Fleet – Experimental build tool for Rust that’s up to 5x faster
Not to be confused with https://www.jetbrains.com/fleet/
firstSpeaker··on Okta concludes its investigation into the January 2022 compromise
Is there any reason they do not mention who is the "globally recognized cybersecurity firm"? Also I did not find them mentioning anything about honesty :).
firstSpeaker··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
Elon Musk is The genius for manufacturing, super deep research, and science as evident with success he has.

He has no experience, or at least none that I read about. Social media is complex simply because of human element involvement and immense regulatory push and pull.

Given that, I cannot see how he can replicate the success for science, manufacturing, tech in the social scene.

firstSpeaker··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
It will be end of Twitter, or beginning of the end.
firstSpeaker··on Zim – The Zsh configuration framework
What do you use as terminal emulator? I Switches from iterm2 to kitty and omz to starship. It is for sure faster now to start the terminal, even running commands has different response time, visible to the eyes.

Could I ask How does fisher come into play if you have something like starship already?

firstSpeaker··on Atlassian services are still down, 5 days and counting
We are running out on premise JIRA and confluence. There are people Who are constantly drumming the bear of move to cloud install since the on-premise is always running behind in versions.

I guess this is going to give them something to think about.

We have a similar story with our bitbucket, which is on-premise. And everyone wants it to move to cloud because it is falling behind in the feature.

I can imagine my jira or wiki beging down, but for the source code repository it can turn into a disaster very quickly.

firstSpeaker··on Improving software supply chain security with tamper-proof builds
Supply chain protection and security is making its way into thoughtworks radar as well: https://www.thoughtworks.com/radar/techniques
firstSpeaker··on Improving software supply chain security with tamper-proof builds
Yes.
firstSpeaker··on Show HN: Warp, a Rust-based terminal
I will put a reminder for myself to come back and test this in about 6 months. I hope by then I can pick and replace iterm2, for long I have been looking for a replacement.
firstSpeaker··on Show HN: Warp, a Rust-based terminal
I pay for apps that I use once a months or once every other month, why not for something that I will use everyday for long hours. However:

- Collecting telemetry - Requiring sign up (and associating telemetry wit it)

Are flags for me.

If you want to collect feedback fast and easy, the best would have been letting it be taken for a spin by folks in HN and and you could have probably benefitted from a good deal of input on improvement or bug-hunting.

A terminal with a dedicated well funded company, I welcome and can pay for such terminal. But collecting too much data these days is at least frowned upon by almost everyone.

firstSpeaker··on Ask HN: What's the best platform for technical writing in 2022?
Also note that https://store.humon.io/ just redirect to https://humon.io/ and there is no way to shop the gear (that is if it is out)
firstSpeaker··on Ask HN: What's the best platform for technical writing in 2022?
Which Hugo theme are you using?
firstSpeaker··on Choose your status game wisely
I work in an enterprise and have loads of meeting with folks that are wearing suits while I am in the technical side of the house. I could clearly see that the approach changed when I started wearing suit pants (trousers?) and well ironed shirt and oxford into the meetings than my usual tshirt and jeans.

As someone else said in the thread, it works like a shield and also a projection of authority somehow in those meetings.

When I realised that I started building my closet up with shirts and trousers and retiring my tshirts and jeans for work outfit.

firstSpeaker··on How I operated as a Staff engineer at Heroku (2020)
Not to hijack the thread, but anyone knows any book on what a director of engineering does?
firstSpeaker··on Missing wheat from the war is less than 1% of global wheat crop
Reading this made me very happy. I was seriously scared and low thinking about 25% shortage of wheat. I hope this closer to reality than the 25% claim(short term considering fertiliser supply issue in the future?). This is the type of news I hope to read more often these days.
firstSpeaker··on Grafana Mimir – Horizontally scalable long-term storage for Prometheus
Thank you for the reply.
firstSpeaker··on Ask HN: What newsletter are you receiving that you are reading?
I know about Stratechery and it is pretty good!
firstSpeaker··on Grafana Mimir – Horizontally scalable long-term storage for Prometheus
How does it work with Rules? So far I cannot see if this can be a replacement for prometheus since I cannot see how can we re-use our prometheus rules with Mimir. Anyone knows anything around that?
firstSpeaker··on I have been terminated from Zoom for refusing to remove the following tweets
I hope to see a response from Zoom on this.
firstSpeaker··on U.S. eliminates human controls requirement for fully automated vehicles
No steering wheels or brake pedals! Feels scary but we are giving technology way more control over our lives already :-).

The amount of hatred directed toward Russians in this blog post scares me, not sure why though.

Some paragraphs...:

"Russian government is ruled by this evil precisely because of who russian people are. Their individual choices led to this. It’s the nation of slaves. Even the smartest russians I know were surprising me from time to time with imperialist, sexist, racist narratives."

"This shit is deeply rooted in the russian language too. It’s subconscious. Their tsars had been killing and raping them for centuries, and it became a part of their cultural DNA, which they learned to love."

firstSpeaker··on Documenting equipment losses during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine
Is there any hypothesis on why Russia has taken over Chernobyl so early in the war?
firstSpeaker··on Germany softens stance on curbing Russian access to SWIFT
Cutting Russia from SWIFT is not like cutting Iran off. Russia is way richer with far more reach and cutting more and more countries off of the network will give more and chance for one of the alternatives to grow.
firstSpeaker··on LinkedIn debuts its own podcast network
I can imagine part of will be that and a part will be highly technical Folks getting together and having podcasts in form of panels
firstSpeaker··on [dead]
Yes, 3 doses so far!
firstSpeaker··on Apple bans accounts of developers from Belarus
That is the case with most US/Europe sanctions. They target ordinary people more than the super rich. Iran would be an example :).
