firstSpeaker··on Daylight Computer – New 60fps e-paper tablet
Is there any video/comparison for the software functionality with the likes of Kindle Scribeb, ReMarkable, etc. for note taking?
firstSpeaker··on The race to replace Redis
I wonder if there is a qualitative analysis of the commits. Aka, it changed a line of comment vs it introduced a new feature or refactored and increased long term viability, etc.
firstSpeaker··on eBay is laying off 9 percent of its workforce
I think it was expected after Musk let go of so many people and technically speaking twitter is still functioning as it was with a bunch of extra features (half baked some might be).
firstSpeaker··on I'm sorry but I cannot fulfill this request it goes against OpenAI use policy
They all seem to be 3rd party products and not stuff sold by Amazon. Some 3rd party seller is doing some doo doo
firstSpeaker··on Twitch to Cut 500 Employees, About 35% of Staff
> single biggest AWS

I think that has always been Amazon.com since it runs on AWS.

firstSpeaker··on LinkedIn ad prices up as X plummets
> subscribe to such dark patterns

Could you elaborate on few of the patterns you mentioned?

firstSpeaker··on Reminiscing CGI Scripts
I think the last time I wrote CGI was with Delphi 6 maybe. This article just brought up memories of old times.
firstSpeaker··on Programmers: Occupational Outlook Handbook: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
>>Employment of computer programmers is projected to decline 11 percent from 2022 to 2032.

Is this organization accurate in their predictions? (aka, do they have a proven record of predicting correctly?)

firstSpeaker··on I worked in Amazon HR and was disgusted at what I was seeing with PIP plans
How about L7->L8?

firstSpeaker··on One of the most intense El NiñOS ever observed could be forming
Is there any resource to read what is the impact on each country?
firstSpeaker··on Amazon Andy Jassy shouldn’t make RTO decisions in echo chamber of CEOs feelings
This is one of the primary contributors to the decision, not only the free time/etc. contribute to the higher retention but also the sense of beloning, and friendships that are made in workplaces.
firstSpeaker··on Pushing the Generative AI Far
I am not sure if people who go and play this game are actually helping further training the model that is generating this pictures.
firstSpeaker··on Amazon acquires Fig
very likely this will become part of AWS CodeWhisperer. I wouldnt be surprised if MSFT or GOOG going after WARP for example to counter balance.
firstSpeaker··on TikTok is the most popular news source for 12 to 15-year-olds
The main issue with TikTok that I am very much concerned about the portray of life in a way that is not matching the reality. Aka, it changes expectations of people so much that reality looks very disappointing or dull to them and that has a lot of downsides short and long term for mental health, career growth, personal growth and one's role in the society.
firstSpeaker··on Leaked Google Salary Data Shows How Much Thousands of Employees Make

firstSpeaker··on Stability AI CEO: There Will Be No (Human) Programmers in Five Years
I can imagine far in the future we will have multi purpose AI models generating models that are narrowed to a specific task, for example a model trained on the entire corpus of text available to humanity (legal cases/libraries/blogs/debate ToS/the trash on the internet/etc.) to generate a model that is faster and more accurate to do inference work for legal cases.

Replacing all human programmers in 5 years is a bit too far fetched even for a CEO who is trying to do fundraising.

For programming, I can imagine in 5 years we will have AI trained on massive codebases that enterprises have (+10m lines of code) and the machine would detect duplicates/crossing boundaries, etc. but to replace those who develop creative solution to problems in mere 5 years... :D

firstSpeaker··on Google's updated privacy policy states it can use public data to train its AI
Likely true. Previously it was any attribution data that was the most valuable since advertising benefit from that. With the LLM and what comes next I imagine every bit of data, structured or unstructured, accurate or not, is going to have some value to someone somewhere.

firstSpeaker··on The FTC plans to slap companies with hefty fines for using fake reviews
>Explicitly, the FTC aims to ban "businesses from writing or selling consumer reviews or testimonials by someone who does not exist, who did not have experience with the product or service, or who misrepresented their experiences." Similarly, companies won't be allowed to obtain or disseminate reviews and testimonials that they "knew or should have known that they were fake or false."

The part about should have known is going to become an open ended debate over if e.g. Amazon should have known or not.

firstSpeaker··on SEC asks for emergency order to freeze Binance US assets anywhere in the world
I wished to see some analysis by smart people on HN if this is a lawful request, can they do it and what are the local/global consequences. So far not that much discourse in that regard.
firstSpeaker··on Preparing for the Incoming Computer Shopper Tsunami
Sometime I feel sad that younger generations won’t have the excitements of early days of PC and sometimes I feel they might be better off spending their time on something that is more productive. One thing for sure, that era is gone and all The most of the enablers of that era are also history now.

Amount of time I spend reading and researching which motherboard and RAM would best fit together makes me smile from time to time. Or the amount of time I spend searching for extra memory chips for my trident card…

firstSpeaker··on Oracle Cloud is having a major outage
They need SVP+ level approval to mark disruption/unavailability.
firstSpeaker··on Meta tells staff to return to office three days a week
If all companies workers that can work remote work remotely there will be a reduction in doom scroll during commutes, and that has all kind of implications :).
