firstSpeaker··on Apache NetBeans 15
Around NetBeans 5 and 6 it was becoming pretty good to be a competitor to IntelliJ...
firstSpeaker··on What makes a senior engineer? Writing software vs. building systems
One of the few companies that I have seen to have constantly kept the bar is Amazon. I have seen many other who have just inflated the titles to keep folks happy.
firstSpeaker··on ErgodoxE EZ – an ergonomic keyboard with open source firmware
I very much like the UHK v1, but the trackball module wasnt good enough for me. It is sitting in a drawer.

firstSpeaker··on Apple Introduces Apple Watch Ultra
I think this is a the first act from apple entering into active lifestyle market for the endurance/outback/mountain and outgoing folks.

It is definitely not for me this year, it does not have the battery life I need during an excursion and there is no possibility of charge on the go (like good old Garmin watches that you can charge while using during an activity).

But in few years it will advance the same way apple watch has advanced :-).

firstSpeaker··on Apple Introduces Apple Watch Ultra
It depends how many photos you take!
firstSpeaker··on Apple Introduces Apple Watch Ultra
Good question.
firstSpeaker··on Apple Introduces Apple Watch Ultra
I have Garmin fenix 6s now. I do long runs and thus switched to Garmin from Apple watch way back then. With the Watch Ultra I am thinking in few iteration it might become a fair choice for me.

What I really hope is that Apple somehow allow battery extensions. E.g. a battery extension strap or something along that line. Then it will for sure be a choice for me.

Imagine on back of the wrist is the watch and a battery on the other side that connects to the watch and extends the battery life for days.

firstSpeaker··on Ask HN: What subscription services are worth paying for IT professional
https://pragmaticengineer.com/ newsletter for me was a fun investment. another thing that I do, which is not a subscription for products, is putting money into opensource projects that I use. E.g. the terminal emulator, cli tools and some such. If they have patron or something I try and sign up or send one time sums.

I do not believe any shithead should be given a pass. My comment was mostly about who decides who is a shithead. If tomorrow someone famous/outreaching enough on twitter/etc. decides that I am a shithead, should google close my account?
firstSpeaker··on Kiwi Farms has been removed from the Internet Archive
Or it can be neither. My comment was for general state of things and more particular for Cloudflare. Apologies for lack of clarity in the comment.

I hope in 10 years we could compare the state of the internet with today and see what else has slowly became the norm. It feels like we are moving toward a tech tyranny bit by bit. Every day we wake up and things are change a very little bit and we assume this is how it has always been or it is supposed to be.

Note that I do not defend any ill action that anyone on KF has done. What I am trying to point out is how the Internet is becoming a playground for few big tech to do as they see fit. Maybe our regulation/laws didn't catch up, or that they are inefficient, and that opens the space for tech staff/CEOs to make judgement calls and execute the judgment.

firstSpeaker··on Kiwi Farms has been removed from the Internet Archive
Absolutely. When there is a due process and it is done with the accordance of law that we are all supposed to abide. Not by unilateral decision of a tech CEO/Staff.
firstSpeaker··on Kiwi Farms has been removed from the Internet Archive
Whenever I read stories of big tech making decision to destroy some digital asset by taking decisions like this or banning people from their accounts (read gmail, google drive, etc.) It makes me shiver. They can put a brick wall in front of anyone's life/business.
firstSpeaker··on GitHub Actions Degraded Performance
Whichever team of SRE is on rotation hopefully will get some extra cool-off time.
firstSpeaker··on I spent a year designing a low profile, minimal mechanical keyboard
Any future plan to launch a split version of this?
firstSpeaker··on I spent a year designing a low profile, minimal mechanical keyboard
Thank you for sharing this. It looks interesting and I will wait to hear more. I wish that you had a few high res photos of the keyboard from different angle that I could just go through. The spinning graphic and different slice cuts are a bit hart for me to mentally place and imagine the keyboard.
firstSpeaker··on Philippines orders fraud probe after paying MacBook prices for Celeron laptops
I wonder if the seller is also part the problem.
firstSpeaker··on Amazon to acquire maker of Roomba vacuum for roughly $1.7B
Could you elaborate more on "We already know Amazon has a service to sell data to police" statement?
firstSpeaker··on Amazon to acquire maker of Roomba vacuum for roughly $1.7B
I have had super poor experience with iRobot to the point that we discarded the vacuume+mop unit we had.
firstSpeaker··on What’s going on with Google and Facebook hiring freezes?
I wonder what is going on with Amazon. They seem to be going strong with hiring.
firstSpeaker··on What’s going on with Google and Facebook hiring freezes?
My process with Google just stopped. No further update form the recruiter. It just went on silence. Sometimes it feels like I made the right choice not changing to Klarna early this year and staying at my current work.
firstSpeaker··on Leaked documents reveal Amazon’s process to review employees’ worth to Amazon
Anyone with experience about SDM L8 and SDE L7 and how the whole rating works for these levels?
firstSpeaker··on Leaked documents reveal Amazon’s process to review employees’ worth to Amazon
So, would an L7 engineer report to an L7 manager? Or there is a sort of limit on what levels would be direct or what levels?
firstSpeaker··on Leaked documents reveal Amazon’s process to review employees’ worth to Amazon
What levels of SDE usually have hire for fire at Amazon? SDE I? II?
firstSpeaker··on Leaked documents reveal Amazon’s process to review employees’ worth to Amazon
I wonder if the leaked documents is real and exist in this case.

firstSpeaker··on Trilium Notes: note taking application for large personal knowledge bases
So much reminds me of Obsidian.
firstSpeaker··on Ask HN: Are you using visual note taking (Sketchnoting) techniques?
The whole idea is about adding graphical notations to the notes to make it more visual. Visual notes supposedly are absorbed faster and have higher retention. I updated the ASK's description with a link to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sketchnoting

There are plenty of blogs and courses about it and I thought to check with the community before diving deeper.
