One of the few companies that I have seen to have constantly kept the bar is Amazon. I have seen many other who have just inflated the titles to keep folks happy.
Worse, your title - and your quality of life at Amazon - is entirely dependent upon what your manager thinks of you.
It matters way more than at other companies.
