firic··on Major Climate Report Describes a Strong Risk of Crisis as Early as 2040
I've always wondered how that works. Is there a standard that is enforced or is like a charity that you have to trust?
firic··on Zuckerberg Faces Anger Over Facebook Executive’s Kavanaugh Support
Did Kavanaugh rape someone? I don't know. Are you 100% sure that he did? If not, lets assume that he didn't. Your statement is now wrong since he is worrying about that.
firic··on Reddit Hits 1B Views per Month 1 Year After Launching Native Video Player
imgur is terrible for mobile users
firic··on Gaza: Coding in a conflict zone
What would you recommend Israel do when Hamas's charter literally says that they what to destroy Israel and the Jews? Hamas is Gaza's elected party and letting them import weapons is very bad for Israeli civilians.
firic··on Vote.org needs your help increasing voter turnout this year
> The obvious solution would be to move Election Day to Saturday, but that’s not going to happen anytime soon.

This "obvious" solution would prevent all observant Jews from voting.

Not every individuals, but there are people that are trustworthy. Institutions rarely are because they are only as trustworthy as the people on top who change every once in a while

Why is python 2.7 faster than 3? I thought one of the big reasons to switch to 3 was because of performance
firic··on Canada MPs vote to strip Aung San Suu Kyi of honorary citizenship
British Muslims would seem to be one of the least radical Muslims. After all, they don't kill gays like Muslims in Iran, Afghanistan, Yemen etc.

I never claimed that radical Muslims don't want to kill other Muslims. In fact the Sunni and Shiite conflict probably killed more Muslims than non-Muslims.

firic··on Canada MPs vote to strip Aung San Suu Kyi of honorary citizenship
This survey makes it seem like more Muslims are radicalized than you seem to think based on what you wrote

firic··on What happens when you register a domain?
> When you register a domain, you become the owner

So what happened to the daily stormer? How can something you own be taken away?

firic··on Payday loans are coming for everyone
That $68 earning is either going to the employee or the employer. If law forces it to go to the employees then the employers could try to hire people for $68 less salary.
firic··on ProtonMail Hits 5M Accounts
Hmm, looks like you locked that thread. That looks suspiciously like there was some information you didn't want to get out. After all, trolls spamming will just get downvoted.
firic··on The strength of a monopoly can be guessed at by calling customer support
Don't just look at first world countries. Even though the USSR had high taxes I doubt that their tax authority had good customer service.
firic··on The strength of a monopoly can be guessed at by calling customer support
Good customer support doesn't cost much more than bad customer support. They are people earning close to minimum wage who provide good customer support. The problem is that the IRS doesn't care to provide good customer support because they have no need to.
firic··on Let’s bring back the Sabbath as an act against ‘total work’
You asked this question when it was shabbat for most people but shabbat recently ended for me.

There are many things you can do on Shabbat. You can go on a walk, have a family meal, play board games (I only play board games on Shabbat), take a nap, read a book, etc. There are some gray areas, such as if you can carry something outside. Most people figured out a way to do it. No computing and telecommunication is universal with exception for life critical activities like with doctors and fire fighters.

firic··on Let’s bring back the Sabbath as an act against ‘total work’
God is not tricked. There is no restriction against cooking on Shabbat. There are restrictions against eg. making a fire and building. If you can somehow cook without doing any of those things, then there is nothing wrong with it.
firic··on Why Is College in America So Expensive?
Then colleges would have to be in the business of risk management. That would be like charging a hospital based on the recovery rate.
firic··on A military technique for falling asleep in two minutes

firic··on A military technique for falling asleep in two minutes
> A secret military technique that is said to help anyone fall asleep in just two minutes has recently been revealed.

and

> The secret is detailed in the book Relax and Win: Championship Performance, which although first published in 1981

I guess 37 years is "just" for the author.

firic··on OSM condemns recent anti-semitic vandalism
That is what I thought, but you replied saying that he made other edits ... What happened? Did he just change the title (not so bad) or did he do something worse?
firic··on OSM condemns recent anti-semitic vandalism
Oh, well then that might change my opinion. I will try to find a better source when I have some time. I find it stage that the osm letter didn't mention exactly what happened.
firic··on OSM condemns recent anti-semitic vandalism
I'm Jewish so I can give you my point of view, but there are many other people who may feel differently. For me this is simply a troll doing something that he thinks is funny and slightly inconveniences the mods at osm. Calling certain areas "Jewish" is not antisemitic in the way that is in any way dangerous. Here is a joke from Jews about how Teaneck is Jewish [1], nothing antisemitic about that. Here is a joke about Israel being Jewish [2] .

But lets just say that this was antisemitic. So what? Trolls do offensive things online all the time. OSM was properly alerted to it and quickly reverted it.

firic··on California governor signs overhaul of bail system
you should have written this in your opening post. In your op I thought that you were suggesting for some sort of whipping boy. Your clarification makes more sense. some things that should be pointed out is that your collateral can refuse, and that skipping bail is still a crime, so if you ditch, you will be hunted and be revoked bail rights for the rest of your life.
firic··on California governor signs overhaul of bail system
If judges risk themselves politically if they release people on bail then that means that the will of the people is to rarely release people on bail. I know it may sound weird to you and me but apparently there are a lot of people in California who feel that someone accused of a crime should suffer in prison until they are proven innocent. That is the disadvantage of democracy, people with different opinions get to vote. The solution is to educate voters why you think that they should vote differently or to move to another place.
firic··on California governor signs overhaul of bail system
What does this have to do with one party? How is a primary system in one party different than a general election amongst two parties?
firic··on Y Combinator Learns Basic Income Is Not So Basic After All
"Good" land is scarce. If you were to propose price control only in unwanted land then that law wouldn't do anything because the price there is already low. I was referring to wanted land, ie. land where price control would do something
firic··on Y Combinator Learns Basic Income Is Not So Basic After All
Price control for a scarce resource (eg. land) will lower the price for people who are better connected (friends of the seller, same religion as the seller, etc) but will make the cost impossible for others. The solution to the housing problem is to build more houses.
firic··on Cigarette butts are the single greatest source of ocean trash
The idea is to make a pack cost 0.2*num_of_cigs_in_pack more dollars and then when someone returns butts, they can receive that money back. It will not be a subsidy and even if the butts were thrown in the trash afterwards, it would at least lower litter.
firic··on National prison strike launches over underpaid labor and prison conditions
Killing all prisoners will make recidivism 0. I think you can understand that just as I can. But I assume that we both agree that that is not a good solution.
