fineIllregister··on Florida man arrested after trying to cross Atlantic in hamster wheel vessel
> I'd guess that injuries as a result of accidental gun discharge and/or fireworks easily 10x-100x yearly spend on search and rescue.

Fireworks are illegal in many states. Guns are regulated and there's widespread efforts for more.

fineIllregister··on Why Socialism? (1949)
Labor doesn't operate like that. If we wake up one day and suddenly need a ton of labor, we don't need idle worker. We can reassign active labor, like in World War II.

Also, it's weird to casually call people becoming homeless and starving and dying due to lack of work "slack". I'm sure the people desperate for money see that as a crisis more important than whatever abstract system crisis you are imagining.

fineIllregister··on New York’s crackdown on Airbnb began Tuesday
The government's obligations to its residents is far higher than tourists with very specific needs. There is no tourism if the area can't support workers to serve tourists due to inflated housing costs.
fineIllregister··on Who’s Afraid of Lorne Michaels?
SNL hires a lot of people with improv background because that's where comedy makers are. They hire just as many people from stand-up backgrounds, because that's the other place comedians are. Last year's new four were all stand-up, like Pete Davidson.

Improv players are in a good position because being able to create comedy in the moment (improv) is a good proxy for being able to create comedy over a week (SNL). Writing is so important to SNL that players must either write themselves or partner with a writer to get airtime.

Some of the best moments were improvised, for sure, but they're not planning on it (obviously) and they're not depending on it. The sibling comment said enough about that.

> The writers change up the script until the last second, anyway, so the players are usually just as surprised at their lines as anyone.

Yeah, it's written. They're reading the lines. Not improvised. Obviously they're bringing creativity to it in their acting, but they've heard it in pitch meeting, they've contributed to writing it, they've heard it at table read, they've heard it at dress rehearsal, maybe a line on the cue card has changed.

There are moments of improvisation, but SNL is emphatically not improv.

fineIllregister··on Canonical’s recruitment process is long and complex
> What violence occurred during the transition of power? Who tried to stop the political processes?

There wasn't supposed to be a transition of power. A violent initiation to the transfer of power when transfer of power was not supposed to occur is a non-peaceful transfer of power.

fineIllregister··on Who’s Afraid of Lorne Michaels?
> I still don’t understand what he was doing on SNL. It was like they just pulled “that guy” from the friend group who said, “pffft I could do that.” Improv...

SNL isn't improvised. Also I've never heard anyone claim Pete Davidson has improv ability.

fineIllregister··on Canonical’s recruitment process is long and complex
VPOTUS assuming the presidency absolutely is a new administration. Hard to see how anyone could claim otherwise.

Consider Andrew Johnson, who wasn't even the same party as Lincoln. He was impeached by Republicans and in his run for presidency got his votes mostly from Southern whites. He pardoned basically all confederates. The murder of Lincoln definitely was a violent transfer of power from an abolitionist to a Southern apologist.

fineIllregister··on Source code for Quake 2 rerelease
I remember in one if Carmack's last Quakecon keynotes, after the acquisition, he was talking about future source code releases. He didn't say anything definitive, but he did tell a story where he spoke with a Zenimax lawyer, and they told him how important the GPL releases were.
fineIllregister··on Canonical’s recruitment process is long and complex
> our first non-peaceful transition of power

I know what you mean, but the phrasing seems odd given that the US has gone through multiple transfers of power because POTUS was murdered.

Costco doesn't sell counterfeits of the third-party items they are competing against. Amazon's co-mingling practice is anti-competitive.
fineIllregister··on How the Cheesecake Factory defied the restaurant industry’s rules of success
Not at Cheesecake factory. That's one of their selling points.

> Candidate supply is high quality is low.

And that's before we discuss the supply of Hacker News comments.

fineIllregister··on TSA wants to expand facial recognition to hundreds of airports within a decade
> If I owned a grocery store would it be illegal for me to use facial recognition to identify undercover cops trying to bring in under-age people to buy cigarettes to bust the sales clerks for failing to properly check ID?

How is facial recognition easier than just checking ID?

fineIllregister··on What I’ve learned from 35 years of wearing computerized eyewear (2013)
Seems more likely you would see ads for those donuts, then gym memberships and diet books and weight-loss apps. The goggles would steer you towards the more expensive yogurt because they paid for promotion.
fineIllregister··on Why Does Google Kill So Many Products?
I did miss that. Thanks for the info.
fineIllregister··on Noam Chomsky on language, left libertarianism, and progress
> If West reacted in 2008 how they react now - we could have saved 100s of thousand of people AND avoided 2 wars and billions in military and humanitarian spending.

I don't think this true. The successful resistance to Russia is due to the current strength of Ukraine's military. They have been improving rapidly in response to 2014. Georgia is nowhere near as strong or easy for us to supply.

fineIllregister··on Full Interview: Reddit CEO Steve Huffman Isn’t Backing Down
> But Apollo can offer a better experience because they don't have to sell ads...

Reddit could require serving their ads as a requirement for API access. Right now there is no way for Apollo to serve reddit ads even if they wanted to.

fineIllregister··on Hacker News needs a Dark Mode
This is a reason third-party apps are useful. I use a random app I got off f-droid and it has a dark mode.
fineIllregister··on McDonald's just dropped a brand new Game Boy game

Every source I can find says that secularism/atheism is growing worldwide. Not sure what you're talking about.

Even if "most" people don't "defect", you have to make up the remainder by people going the other way, for which there doesn't seem to be any evidence.

fineIllregister··on Do high interest rates fix high inflation?
I'll chime in because everyone is replying to complain about price controls. There is an alternative: windfall profit taxes. These have been proposed (by one political party) and blocked (by the other political party).
fineIllregister··on Dating, education, and sex ratios
This doesn't pass the eye test. If it's true that religious people will outbreed non-religious people, why is religiosity declining?

The simple answer is that religion is not hereditary. Children of religious parents do not necessarily follow their parents' beliefs.

My family is an example. Several children taught that evolution is fake, and none of us agree with our parents. Only one of us have any religious beliefs at all.

fineIllregister··on SF's Millennium Tower tilting more than ever to the West after early recovery
I agree. It is impressive there aren't more readily available examples.
fineIllregister··on Reddit subs with millions of followers plan to extend the blackout indefinitely
Depends on what you consider "top tier". 26 subs with over 20 million subscribers are private or restricted. 86 subs with over 5 million subscribers. I was too lazy to count, but there's several dozen more over 1 million subscribers and a ton over half a million.

I'm skeptical they can afford to lose all those subs or replace their mods.

fineIllregister··on I applied to McDonald's and other fast food jobs but chatbots made it impossible
GP said the person jumped through the hoops to submit the resume online. They have the candidate's information; they're actively choosing not to hire.

The most likely explanation is that understaffing hasn't reduced revenue more than the additional staff would cost. That's not what I would call "incompetence".

> It’s frustrating because the stores are understaffed and always ask for applicants during checkout.

If they wanted to hire more, they would. Understaffing is intentional.
