fillskills··on Turn your backyard into a biodiversity hotspot
I am cofounder of a startup called HealingGardens.co. We are trying to help biodiverse urban gardens make revenue with an airbnb like model.

If anyone here has an urban garden and would like to list it on our marketplace, we would be glad to review or help.

If you have questions or want to work on something with us please feel free to reach out at abhi at healinggardens.co

fillskills··on Ask HN: What's your favorite illustration in computer science?
Ahmazing...
fillskills··on Show HN: I spent 2 years building Tablane as a 17-year-old
An additional tip: College is not too hard, specially in colleges where you can choose to pursue easier subjects or less number of subjects in a semester when needed. This might give OP the flexibility to purse the startup/project in parallel with college if they want.
fillskills··on Scientists have discovered the first virovore – an organism that eats viruses
So is it fair to say that the bug is in the cell replicator system that doesn’t recognize the difference between a virus and a regular useful protein?
fillskills··on Scientists have discovered the first virovore – an organism that eats viruses
Very silly beginner question: Arent viruses non-alive? Arent virsus just DNA strands that if they fall into the right place in a cell mechanism, the cell mechanism will replicate them by mistake.
fillskills··on Update: Stripe is holding over $400k of mine with no explanation [resolved]
Reading between the lines, it looks like: 0. Stripe for some legal reason cannot explain in detail why some transaction is 'flagged' 1. The information Stripe asked for was not enough to reach a decision. 2. Stripe team members dont know how or what to communicate when they dont have a clear decision. 3. Customer is stuck in limbo.

fillskills··on Ask HN: Parents: Best screen-time limiting software?
You might want to consider something like the Purple Firewalla device that allows to have parental control across your home network. Though kids can always turn off wifi and get around. Link: https://firewalla.com/products/firewalla-purple
fillskills··on Disassembling an Amazon Blink Mini camera
I use a Blink Camera in an semi active zone (backyard) and it lasted 1.5 years without battery change. Blew my mind since it offered almost the same functionality with better performance thank top of the market competitors.
fillskills··on Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've built?
Ah good old Silverlight. I once wrote a Drag and Drop library in SL. Good times. I miss XAML.
fillskills··on An animated introduction to Elixir
Its really fast. Their site used to be really slow. Big change
fillskills··on Idea Inbox (2021)
One things I want in my idea tracker is the abilities to a) Add context over time b) Grade my ideas, probably simply from 1 to 10 based on how much depth I think they have. Most of my ideas start out unverified and without context and when I share my idea or do more research about it or even think more about it, I always find some nuances, additional context, modifications or the best is that even better ideas come out.

So I am building what I call "Idea percolator" : https://github.com/abhihub/IdeasPercolator_react_frontend

fillskills··on Show HN: Open-Sourcing InboxSDK (YC S11) – Build Apps in Gmail
Will it be possible to create a 'allow/disallow list'? I have been dreaming of an inbox where I can block all incoming emails by default. A separate page shows tags of incoming domains and people (highlighting how much you have communicated with them previously). Then I can whitelist whose communication I actually want to see in my inbox.

Looking at the docs this isnt possible so far but happy to be corrected. Great product and also very nice of you to OSS it.

fillskills··on Ask HN: Co-Founder? Seeking Co-Founder?
SEEKING CO-FOUNDER | Wellness+Climate+Nature | Full-Stack Developer | Worldwide | Seed

HealingGardens.co Healing Gardens — an AirBnb of gardens. We are a platform that allows users to safely reap the benefits of the Great Outdoors by reserving time at a nearby private garden and/or farm. Farms/Gardens on our platform have been offering very interesting things for guests such as birthday parties, wine tastings, gardening classes, micro weddings, sound baths, reptile rescue trainings and so many more things. Our reason to exist is two fold - to enable access to nature for people in cities. And secondly to make money for urban farmers. We started 2 years ago when I used nature to recover from acute anxiety attacks. That and a few other events made me realize the difference access to nature could make to the mental health of people. So with the help of my cofounder who is an urban gardener for 8+ years, we started to think of ways we can help. So far we have helped 40 gardens make $100K+. And guests continously give the gardens amazing reviews. You can read some of them on google.

We are looking for help in continuously improving our tech specially our backend. Currently the backend is an .Net API on a Postgres DB. To connect, you can email: abhi@healinggardens.co

fillskills··on “Privacy”.com–Yeah Right
You are right - current notary system may not be optimal for this use case. What I meant to say was that in my understanding, my main issue with 3rd parties such as OnFido etc is my lack in trusting them with my information and secondly storing that info in a central repository. If a bad entity gets access to that database, they now have very detailed information about me.

I would rather prefer a decentralized & secure way that can be accesses via an API by companies such as privacy.com etc. The distributed piece is solved by Notaries. Could we learn something from how the notary system works that can be leveraged to build out a modern distributed ID verification system.

fillskills··on “Privacy”.com–Yeah Right
If you think about it, there is a way this is done already in the real world - using Notaries. Notaries verify your ‘documents’. Not that’s they are experts at sensitive data storage, but there could be something to learn from the ‘distributed’ system of notaries.
fillskills··on “Privacy”.com–Yeah Right
What makes you think OnFido is sketchy? It’s a pretty popular platform for ID verification.

3rd party verification has become a standard in the fintech/insuretech industries since its very hard and risky to do KYC on your own. Also personally I don’t trust having all the random companies I transact with maintain my KYC info. At least in theory, the experts at ID verification have strong enough incentives, motivation and expertise to keep my data safe, reducing the attack surface area.

Not affiliated with either party.

fillskills··on Stripe has decided to nuke my entire business
Emailing now. Was trying to resolve it with support. For a while they sent non templated emails. Now its back to templates.
fillskills··on Stripe has decided to nuke my entire business
Hi, we are facing the same story for one of our CONNECT customers. This customer is simply a garden that sells tickets to visit the garden. Somehow Stripe connected that with cannabis sales. There is no cannabis anywhere on their garden. Now sure what kicked off this account closer.

Worst part is not that the account was closed. Worst part is that Stripe is not asking or giving any proofs/comments/data. They are simply sending templated replies. Its like talking to a robot while someones livelihood may be connected to this being resolved.

Also overall our dispute ratio is almost Zero. People visiting gardens dont dispute their visits. So frustrating.

fillskills··on Ask HN: YC misses that went on to do well (like veed.io)
YC reject here. Created a B2C company doing 5M/month revenue in 4 years. Exited. Applied with second company to YC (B2B), rejected again. Hoping to grow it bigger than last time.

fillskills··on Man overcharged 20 rupees for India train ticket wins 22-year legal battle
Yes, sadly this is true and one of the biggest bottlenecks in India. There are many ways (bribing and legal) to delay a case. I have known cases to last 20-30 years because more time will benefit one of the parties. For example if a rich person sues a poor person, lets say for an inherited property, the rich person benefits from making the case go longer. They dont even have to have a valid case, just after enough delays, the poor person is going to move on. Replace 'poor' above with any disadvantaged group.

Edit: The rich/powerful people give a return of their "winnings" to the judges/court-employees. This is one of the main reasons for delays on cases that can be easily closed.

fillskills··on Scratch is a big deal
Maybe one of the reasons for sudden increase in the projects are companies such as Whitehat Jr. Whitehat incorporates and leverages Scratch in their lesson plans. For each lesson kids may be creating 1-3 Scratch programs. You can read more about Whitehat Jr, their approach to sales etc by doing a little googling. And am sure there are other companies who follow the same practice of leveraging Scratch in tutorials. (edit) Not condoning this, just adding more information.
