fhbdukfrh··on I turned my interview task for Google into a startup
This implies some sort of standardized assessment, which is seldom true. All sorts of bias is at play under the guise of culture, personality and team fit.
fhbdukfrh··on I turned my interview task for Google into a startup
Our current assessment is about 4 hours and i think that's too long. When i was hired I remember multiple points where i seriously considered giving up. O can't help but think how many good people we lose to an excessive applicant process
fhbdukfrh··on I turned my interview task for Google into a startup
Yes, because the only limiting for for super qualified engineers is they don't get paid for coding in their copious amounts of free time.

If you want to limit your pool of potential hires to rock stars who don't have jobs (pool size of approx. zero) this is a great approach.

fhbdukfrh··on Walmart announces next-day delivery, firing back at Amazon
Funny thing is ordering out of the USA to Canada is way better with usps because they turn the package over to Canada post, which if anything only charges gst. Everyone else rips you off with huge brokerage fees
fhbdukfrh··on Why do you grab your bag when running off a burning plane?
"there's a limit to what I'm willing to do to mitigate risk..."

This is a troll right? Plan for a plane crash but not willing to use proper waterproof storage?

fhbdukfrh··on Why do you grab your bag when running off a burning plane?
Carrying your passport on your person has nothing to do with planning for a plane crash. You probably carry your phone in your pocket walking down the street just in case of... meteor strike? Godzilla attack?
fhbdukfrh··on Why do you grab your bag when running off a burning plane?
You're kidding right? Plane crash? Over water?

You'd be lucky to survive, who cares about your hard drive.

fhbdukfrh··on I was curious if a nonsense LinkedIn account would get job offers. It does!
When a recruiter sends you unsolicited job postings it's not a job offer, it's advertising for the supply side of their business. This response is not surprising.
fhbdukfrh··on Three great startups I could build if Google would give me access to their data
I really don't understand what the op is suggesting, asking for or complaining about. He's happy trading his privacy for services, but mad(?) that they don't give him arbitrary access in the form he wants, but understands that its their product, but wishes they would anyway, but knows that a business never would, but wouldn't it be cool?

Plus the awesomeness of these ideas is debatable (trade even more data, tracking and privacy for neat feature) and by his own admission the product idea is the easy part of building a business, thus not really startups.

fhbdukfrh··on Canada Border Services seizes lawyer's phone, laptop for not sharing passwords
I would think most offenses are for improper entry, visa, etc. If you were entering to work on a tourism visa I think it would be very easy to find proof in a simple email, text or document.
fhbdukfrh··on Vancouver Airport blocking ads with information on travellers’ privacy rights
Agree, but unfortunately all your suggestion of taking the high road does is disqualify you from ever obtaining elected office...
fhbdukfrh··on Vancouver Airport blocking ads with information on travellers’ privacy rights
But you just answered the GP's concern, safe from what?

Also, just my phone? What about my laptop? Safe from searches? Pickpockets? Malware?

There's a big difference between raising awareness of issues(ex know your rights - check out xyz.com for more info) vs big brother is, watching; trust no one, followed by a border security queue

fhbdukfrh··on Ask HN: As managers, how do you make sure your distributed team is aligned?
I think some touch on this but you cannot possibly align 40+ people directly. If these are all devs, at this scale you need 3-4 engineering managers or 5+ leads. That's were you should be focusing and empower them to carry your message outward.

Looking for a tool to do this is wishful thinking

fhbdukfrh··on 48% of Canadians on brink of insolvency, online survey says
Well.MNP are licensed insolvency consultants so regardless of the sample size the entire survey smacks of bias.

There are way better indicators of insolvency than this opinion poll. We'd expect a related tick up in actual bankruptcies, or their precursors like auto loan and mortgage defaults.

fhbdukfrh··on At Colorado, a Breach in Football’s Wall
The big question is field or box lacrosse? There is far less head on head contact in lacrosse, but box lacrosse has the same problem with hits from behind into the boards as hockey.

Somewhat surprising, soccer also has huge concussion issues, so probably CTE as well. They'll try and argue no proven linkage, but to me that doesn't make sense.

My 10 yr old plays football and lacrosse, but next year we will probably switch him to flag football and basketball exclusively. It's just not worth the risks.

fhbdukfrh··on How to Track Your Kids (and Other People's Kids) with the TicTocTrack Watch
So you think SIDS can be effectively addressed by continuous visual monitoring? Do you remotely monitor their vitals as well?

I debate your point that you are not running their future; you're setting up the foundation for both parent and child that this is normal and to be expected. Also the assumption of privacy is tenuous given this experience and all the other terrible IoT implementations that have come to light

fhbdukfrh··on Increasingly Competitive College Admissions: Much More Than You Wanted to Know
Specific programs also tend to set their own prices. Even in Canada with all public schools tuition for business, medical, veterinary, etc. Are all higher
fhbdukfrh··on College Kids Are Living Like Kings in Vancouver’s Empty Mansions
Renter laws in Canada sound very different than Texas. The tenant acts tend to favor the renter I've the landlord in almost all cases. You can debate if this is good or bad, but being a residential landlord is not the same as commercial property
fhbdukfrh··on Firefox Beta for Windows 10 on Qualcomm Snapdragon Now Available
You had your chance with Windows 10 phones loaded with resources and continuum.
fhbdukfrh··on Norway Is Walking Away from Billions of Barrels of Oil
The combination of people fighting oil production in their own countries while making very few meaningful changes to their consumption patterns is a massive example of NIMBYism
fhbdukfrh··on Norway Is Walking Away from Billions of Barrels of Oil
There are actually far more practical reasons for public management of oil and gas resources. The reservoirs are huge and span more than a single owners private property. In order to harvest efficiently you may require coordination or non local maxima decisions to improve overall production. Otherwise you'll leave the majority of the resources in the ground with no way to get them out
fhbdukfrh··on Electronic music reduces host attack and mating success in dengue mosquitoes
Not from a noise pollution perspective :)
fhbdukfrh··on Looking for a new CEO
Well, to be blunt is say you've been a consumer of SO. There's nothing wrong with this but I'd argue that if you don't have 15 rep after 4 years you've been paid back with the knowledge you've gained.

If you can't find a way to get 50 rep on SO get 200 on any other exchange site and that will credit you 100

fhbdukfrh··on Interviews with developers who became managers
I don't think a manager should be grabbing tough bugs unless there is no time sensitivity (so why are you addressing them?) as they never have enough time to complete them and become a blocker.

I think your best bet is to do strategic technical spikes and as an output identify deeper areas for your engineers to pursue.

fhbdukfrh··on Interviews with developers who became managers
Perhaps, but i love to share a favorite book, movie or album with others and it feels similar.

When you kindle the start of the same feeling in someone else that you got from learning or experiencing something new is the best

fhbdukfrh··on Interviews with developers who became managers
I'm a solid coder and have lots of experience in the non technical aspects of our business from consulting and running a startup, but I'm moving into management because it's the best way for me to apply a multiplier to my skills.

Plus I've complained about poor managers long enough that its time for me to step up

fhbdukfrh··on Interviews with developers who became managers
Work themselves out of a job, not necessarily delegate. The former could mean solving a problem once and for all, or putting process in place, or eliminating a task. The latter means having someone else do it.
fhbdukfrh··on My Salary Progression in Tech
I'd have liked to read this but the giant popup ad literally covered the entire screen of my phone. Guess you still get my click for monetization...
fhbdukfrh··on SingleSpot: meet singles in bars and cafés around you
Lots of social clubs are built around sports, pseudo-sports and activities. You get to have fun doing something you like and also meet someone you've already got something in common
fhbdukfrh··on SingleSpot: meet singles in bars and cafés around you
Really? Cause I'm a forty something and i still see all the same places as when i was in your situation: School, work, coffee shops, sports, social clubs, activities, pretty much every place i go has opportunity to casually talk to someone. Funny enough night life locations are probably the worst: Loud, dark, competitive and everyone has their guard up.

My suggestion: Seek out interesting conversation with people, don't target a potential mate. You'll greatly increase your potential pool of both friends and romantics, plus improve your standing within it
