fhackenberger··on Dots: Always-on agents
I was quite successful with docker compose on a cheap hetzner host. I've built (aka vibe coded) a whole workflow around agent boxes, that I can spin up with one command, and git with a quick cloned 'warm' checkout.

I currently communicate with the agents through Claude RC, but I'll consider adding support for messaging them through other channels.

fhackenberger··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
Well if you look at how much prisons cost per day (median of 167$ / day in the US), it's quite obvious that therapy combined with confinement at home would be magnitudes cheaper... My personal guess: it's got to do with the fixation on reward / punishment that's so present in our societies.
fhackenberger··on Air Conditioning Is Not a Luxury, It Is a Necessity
Run on solar (sun usually shines when it's hot) and use geothermic energy. The ground below your house is significantly cooler than the surrounding air.

I'd still favour the fan, I've lived in India for longer periods with consistently around 32-36 C and a fan is perfectly enough after a little while of adapting.

fhackenberger··on A graph that should be front-page news
Hmmm, I remember what happened when we all got more 'free time' by using computers to do things that took us long doing manually.

Making electricity more 'green' is of course necessary but on the backdrop of the current capitalistic system, it will simply lead to more electricity being consumed. See current uptake by LLM data centers.

fhackenberger··on Help Keep Thunderbird Alive
As a user from Germany, it would help a lot if you could provide an IBAN to send you money in EUR directly. These payment providers all take a cut and what ends up being used for recurring donations is SEPA direct debit, which costs me about 10€ if my account ever happens do be too low to take the charge. Please make a way around supporting this ecosystem of banking with every donation!
fhackenberger··on Gitana 18: the new flying Ultim trimaran
The underlying dynamic is always the same: competition kills the game / fun ...
fhackenberger··on Rockstar employee shares account of the company's union-busting efforts
I'd strongly disagree, as there are examples of societies that don't exhibit these traits. See the Kogi from Colombia for example. A necessity environmental condition seems to be that social groups size stays within certain limits (around 120 as I remember).
fhackenberger··on I switched from Htmx to Datastar
Funny, the next cycle is starting ;-) I remember Vaadin which was a great framework just before angularJS took off. Now Datastar seems to give it another try and bring everyone back to server calls...
fhackenberger··on Show HN: Patio – Rent tools, learn DIY, reduce waste
There's a successful one running purely on donations in Berlin: Resi https://www.resi-ressourcen.org/
fhackenberger··on Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic
Cargo bike?
fhackenberger··on Show HN: A singing synthesizer for the browser with automatic 3-part harmony
This is such a great way to practice! Thank you for creating it! Could you perhaps add pitch indicators on the side and multi touch support? Or maybe it's open source?
fhackenberger··on Commercial tea bags release microplastics, entering human cells
I'm not deeply into that topic, but the pan I use that's made of iron was 'burned-in' using linseed oil several times to create a non-sticky surface. Whatever that has as negative side-effects aside, that layer might trap the iron additives quite effectively.
fhackenberger··on Fixing an Elgato HD60 S HDMI capture device with the help of Ghidra
Would love to see Elgatos response to your writeup :-)
fhackenberger··on Postzegelcode
There's a very similar system in Germany with a hashtag code from Deutsche Post since 2020, called #PORTO:

fhackenberger··on Inside North Korea's Forced Labor Program
Even if that were true, who paid for all this? It's mother nature, who's in such a bad shape that we'll soon start paying the price for it again and all the workers that this system has and still is exploiting in other countries (directly through bad working conditions/unfair pay or indirectly through pollution where they live). Please look up 'capitalism externalities' for reference.
fhackenberger··on Turing Complete Transformers: Two Transformers Are More Powerful Than One
Paper written by one transformer?!
fhackenberger··on Undermining Democracy: The EU Commission's Controversial Push for Surveillance
Have a look at 'liquid democracy' it would solve these issues. You basically choose someone to delegate your vote to, but can change that at any time, or vote yourself for specific decisions.
fhackenberger··on Do judges give out tougher sentences when hungry? A study too good to be true
Definitely doable and very common in many old cultures, have a look at the film "The science of fasting" (original German), might be eye opening: https://youtu.be/WgLJ_dfKy1E
fhackenberger··on Compostable fast-food packaging can emit volatile PFAS
You can create a perfect non-sticky surface on cast iron pans like this:

- clean well with strong soap and a metal sponge until it's one smooth silver surface

- put a few drops of flax oil on a paper and rub the pan with it (also inner sides)

- take off all excessive oil with a dry kitchen paper

- remove any non-metal handles from the pan

- open your windows

- heat your oven to the max and put the pan in for about 20 minutes

- repeat about 5 times

After using the pan, wipe with a kitchen paper. Maybe a little bit of warm water, better not. Never any soap.

fhackenberger··on Write a Wayland Compositor [video]
Bit off-topic: My major pain point a while ago was that Gnome-shell crashes take down all running applications. Is that still the case?
fhackenberger··on Upgrade a 1TB PostgreSQL DB in under 10m
We used pglogical to upgrade between from version 9.5 to 13 with minimal downtime (< 10 minutes) running a large DB installation of 1TB in size and multiple extensions.
fhackenberger··on WikiHouse – Open source, modular, wood based, zero carbon housing
One aspect that's missing for me here is the toxicity of the glues used in OSB products. Compared to multi layer timer its massive amounts of glue being using in these OSB panels. Nothing you want in the room where you breathe at least 8 hours a day/night.
fhackenberger··on My customized Wim Hof breathing method
I'd suggest to look into Holotropic breathwork. The WH high is ahmmm tiny in comparison ;-)
fhackenberger··on Launch HN: Helio Sleep (YC S21) – One-stop portal for sleep apnea
I can recommend read the book 'Breath' by James Nestor before buying an expensive device. It shows that most breathing problems are related to the fact that people have changed from nose to mouth breathing, which works against how our bodies are designed.
fhackenberger··on I moved this blog from Medium, here
About 5c per msg, a bit lower for some countries, a bit higher for others.
fhackenberger··on Self-Hosting Dozens of Web Applications and Services on a Single Server
I guess mailcow would suit your needs. Two years ago I replaced an old OpenXchange setup with mailcow and it was fairly easy to switch over. It also support IMAP copy from the admin UI.
fhackenberger··on LAPD declares ‘ghost guns’ an ‘epidemic,’ citing 400% increase in seizures
To me it's obvious that the increase in homicides et.al. is very likely rather due to the increased psychological issues due to the covid-19 restrictions on people...
fhackenberger··on Lenovo Selling Linux Laptops Directly in the US
Quite hilarious to see the page with photos of the laptops showing windows running...
fhackenberger··on My $3.3M Mistake (2009)
That's why it's legally necessary to involve a notary for these kind of transactions in Europe. They can be expensive, but not nearly as expensive as mistakes like this.
fhackenberger··on Ecosia – the search engine that plants trees
The best way to reduce the amount of land we use, is to stick to a plant based diet. Facts, see http://www.cowspiracy.com/facts
