ffssffss··on Thousands trapped on Pine Ridge burn clothes for warmth in wake of storm
That paper also seems to heavily qualify the findings, implying that environmental factors may dominate genetic ones (or may not, the point is that we don't know):

However, these loci explain only a small proportion of the genetic variance. The “missing heritability” may be explained by other genetic mechanisms and gene*environment interactions

ffssffss··on What ChatGPT can't do
I stand corrected. I'm sure they mentioned this at some point and I skipped over it.
ffssffss··on The cold hard truth about electric vehicles in winter
Ah, if you don't think climate change is going to be an issue, then I think I see where you're coming from. I hope you're right.
ffssffss··on The cold hard truth about electric vehicles in winter
I think you're missing the bigger problem here - climate change. We cannot drive in ICE cars forever if we want our environment to remain livable. Your car-based lifestyle might be fine for you, right now, but it's still unsustainable and contributing to a worse world for your kids and their kids. If EVs aren't going to to be a drop in solution, then we really do need to talk about reorganizing society away from cars, so that we can have a society at all in the future.

The only other option is some kind of technological silver bullet for carbon capture that manages to arrive in time.

Personally I'm fairly pessimistic about this problem. I don't see a political path to widespread mass transit in the US, and I don't know how you remove the incentive that developing economies have to pollute. It feels like a prisoners' dilemma.

ffssffss··on What ChatGPT can't do
It's pretty affordable though: https://openai.com/api/pricing/

The most up to date LLM is $0.0200/1K tokens (I believe this is tokens returned, approximately 1 word = 1 token, but not quite). I set a billing limit of $50 a month and spent a couple hours playing around this afternoon. It has cost less than $1 so far.

ffssffss··on TikTok banned on government devices under spending bill passed by Congress
I should have been more precise with my words, I'm talking about universities where adults are attending. I don't think that's true for most universities? At least it wasn't 10 years ago. Back then we all used Facebook quite a bit!
ffssffss··on TikTok banned on government devices under spending bill passed by Congress
The two schools are University of Oklahoma and Auburn University.
ffssffss··on TikTok banned on government devices under spending bill passed by Congress
I guess what concerns me is that in some schools, students are required to live in dorms. So to me, it feels like an encroachment on what I would consider the students' personal, private home, where I suppose they should be allowed to access whatever content they like (minus, of course, the content I deem objectionable, like child exploitation, but thats much easier for us all to agree on I think).
ffssffss··on TikTok banned on government devices under spending bill passed by Congress
This is already happening at a state level, and with some not-unconcerning implications: https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/22/tech/tiktok-universities/inde...

For those two schools, students are completely blocked from accessing TikTok on school networks.

Queen of WSB and yolo record are not a good thing... that is a subreddit that mocks bad risk management by ironically celebrating it. They know exactly what she is over there.
ffssffss··on Bankman-Fried's Shrinking ‘$250M Bond’
There are a lot of people building their understanding of this situation out of breathless headlines and misleading tweets. And I think there's an element of something like, "if he escapes, that means he really was a genius all along, and now I feel a little less bad for losing my money/believing in him".
ffssffss··on State of the Sanderson 2022
Not only is it rare for someone to experience success like Sanderson, it's even rarer for an author to so consistently put out high quality work. The man practically writes a 1,000 page novel a year. He's lucked (and hard-worked) into a lot of leverage here.
ffssffss··on Is Worldcoin a Crypto-Currency for the Masses or Your Digital ID?
What stops someone in a wealthy country from just hiring a bunch of destitute people in a developing country for pennies and borrowing their Worldcoin identities to do bot-stuff? That's kind of how influence networks work anyway, individuals are paid to be indistinguishably legitimate users. It's not like some random guy trying to feed his family is going to give a shit about emailing you his private key if you'll send him some cash in exchange. Odds are he'll never use a "dapp" so it doesn't matter if you trash his Worldcoin identity for your own purpose.
ffssffss··on Ask HN: Is the industry saturated with data scientists already?
I think it's less a case of saturation and more a case of companies realizing that most data scientists don't actually deliver value commensurate to the salaries they were asking. Most companies simply don't have enough data, or don't have hygienic enough data, or don't have the engineering heft to build a reliable data pipeline, so the data scientists often find themselves set up to fail. I've seen that happen a few times.

But, it's not like the fundamentals of the field are wrong. Predictive modeling is still really useful. It's just larger firms are the only ones capable of realizing that value.

ffssffss··on Acceptance of evolution by high school students: Is religion the key factor?
You typically find these people in Evangelical churches that adhere to a literalist interpretation of the Bible, which is the main distinction from other sects of Christianity. These groups also tend to have out-of-mainstream views on eschatology and their own role in bringing the "end times" in the near future (often they believe it will happen in their lifetime).
ffssffss··on ByteDance confirmed it used TikTok to monitor journalists’ physical location
Which US companies are tracking journalist locations for the Chinese government? Tesla?
ffssffss··on Caroline Ellison and Gary Wang are cooperating in the criminal case against SBF
What would be the appropriate prison, one where she lives in depravation and is regularly assaulted by guards and other inmates? Our prison system is deeply unjust and more people should be going to her kind of prison rather than vice versa by my view.
ffssffss··on Don't call yourself a programmer, and other career advice (2011)
The criminal liability is in lying specifically about having the PE license, for work that requires it. Nobody is going to prison for calling themselves an "engineer" on their resume when they apply for a job that itself is called "engineer" by the recruiter.
ffssffss··on Pfizer Penalties Since 2000: $10B
This is exactly the quantity over quality tactic that he's talking about. "You aren't qualified to debate me unless you read this pile of links to conspiracy blogs and unreviewed open access publications". Nobody is going to engage with that, since the best outcome we can expect is to carefully refute each one, only for you to show up with another pile and again demand we play along.
ffssffss··on Caroline Ellison and Gary Wang are cooperating in the criminal case against SBF
She got 11 years of which she'll have to serve at least around 9 because it's federal, and that was for something that probably wasn't fraudulent from the very beginning. So, seems like they... won't be okay.
ffssffss··on The war on merit takes a bizarre turn
This 22 second youtube video is the supporting evidence linked by the article for that "equal outcomes for every student" line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujpcvIsMZBU

So, your guess is as good as mine, because that video certainly is not some kind of school policy position, as the article implies. I'm pretty suspect of the rest of it, since as someone else pointed out, the school actually did notify the students! They just didn't hold a big ceremony. The actual issue that the parents had is that the physical awards - which were delivered to students, in paper, at school, on their desks, did not arrive before early admission deadlines. The students were informed prior to the deadline by emails to their official school district accounts, which the article says they don't often check.

This just overall feels like a culture war hack piece, it's full of red flags from top to bottom, and I mean, it's from a Federalist byline...

ffssffss··on Mastodon's federation model encourages specific instances with peculiar rules
Maybe a better title of this would have been, "Mastodon isn't a good social network for me". It sounds like you'd rather be on some kind of discussion forum with different areas for different topics all united under the same consistent moderation policies.
ffssffss··on Palantir’s SPAC bets backfire
I think the answer is that the investors aren't OK with this and they've all closed their positions! The stock is down 65% in TTM.
ffssffss··on The Tesla Semi cab from the practical POV of someone who drives trucks
There are several other electric semis, the thread lists their manufacturers at the end.
ffssffss··on BloomTech, previously Lambda School, cuts half of staff
It's not about the importance of the act of filing paperwork, it's the fraud of lying to customers that you are following the law and then taking their money. For what it's worth, I don't think prison would help. But maybe some non-dischargable liabilities and a ban from being a corporate officer would.
ffssffss··on Hiring tech lead to help solve major historical puzzle
He founded Xamarin and ran Github after the acquisition. So he has the money and is clearly competent as a manager. The lack of detail makes me think it's probably something dumb though, or something that domain experts have already told him is unlikely to succeed. I wish he'd post more info!
ffssffss··on Twitter has fired more software engineers
Even this metaphor breaks down, in what way would someone who eats at 5 star restaurants be qualified to comment on the structure of the recipe or the reliable sourcing of ingredients? The truth is pretty clear at this point: Musk has no technical chops.
