Steadily | Austin, TX - Remote| Full-time | Python, Django, PostgreSQL, AWS, React | www.steadily.com

Steadily is a venture backed insurtech startup for landlords. We've grown from five to over thirty people in less than a year as the demand for our service continues to rise. Our purpose is to give landlords all over the country a fast, modern insurance buying experience and amazing customer service so they’re confident they’ll have the coverage they need on a rainy day. Because of our technology and service, our customers love being insured by us, even when they have a claim.

feniv··on Chinese ‘Artificial Sun’ experimental fusion reactor sets world record
Not the same reactor, but this high speed video gives a great perspective inside a fusion reactor.

https://youtu.be/IhHsOwLdCu4

feniv··on Enigmatic designs found in India may be the largest images made by human hands
A simple explanation for it would be a farming layout for irrigation.
feniv··on Native Type Theory
Not yet. I've specced it out, but still working on the implementation. Here's a hand-written example showing how you can specify the constraints to validate a Knight's tour. You can then enumerate over the types to get valid tours.

feniv··on Native Type Theory
Seems like this is an extension of the Curry-Howard-Lambek isomorphism [1] relating type theory, logic and category theory together. I find that to be one of the most beautiful results in computer science and have been working on a practical language built on the same principles for a while (A mix of Haskell, Prolog and APL in a python-like language)

feniv··on Show HN: I made a Chrome extension to instantly show recipes without scrolling
Looks great! I've tried it out with a bunch of recipes and liked the cleaner layout of information. Using chrome-extensions to augment the web experience based on metadata like this is definitely an underrated capability.
feniv··on Stupid solutions: Live server push without JS
Seems like an interesting variant of SSE (Server sent events) without the JS code for retries. Both of these approaches are simpler than websockets, with the limitation that they're one-way (server push).
feniv··on XXH3, world's fastest hash algorithm, has reached stable status
If you’re interested in diving deeper, the SMhasher benchmark suite tests a much more exhaustive list of hash functions (including wyhash) - https://github.com/rurban/smhasher

https://www.strchr.com/hash_functions Is also a great write up of how some of the classic hashing algorithms perform of various data sets.

https://nullprogram.com/blog/2018/07/31/ is an interesting approach on generating hashing functions automatically.

feniv··on Cloudflare launches Workers Unbound, next evolution of its serverless platform
Does this also remove the 30 scripts per account limit? I looked into using Cloudflare workers to power a cloud runtime for WASM (think thousands of dynamically generated WASM binaries serving traffic for different sub-domains), but the script limit and CPU limits were a major blocker. I've had great experiences with Cloudflare and would love to use workers if it opens up these limits.

feniv··on GitHub Codespaces
Is the browser editing powered by Monaco or something else entirely? https://github.com/microsoft/monaco-editor

Both repl.it and codesandbox.io seem to be Monaco based. This seems to have better support for VS Code extensions than what's available in Monaco.

feniv··on Lightbeam: A Highly-Optimising Streaming WebAssembly Compiler (2019) [video]
If you can't watch the video, there's a blog post writeup of Lightbeam by the presenter here - http://troubles.md/posts/lightbeam/
feniv··on Multi-Value All the Wasm
TIL! Lucet is being switched over to Wasmtime as well [1]. I'll have to take another look at it.

[1] https://hacks.mozilla.org/2019/11/announcing-the-bytecode-al...

feniv··on Multi-Value All the Wasm
I'm looking forward to seeing this supported in Wasmer as well. A lot of these announcements seem to target wasmtime as the default standalone runtime (and it has come a long way, especially with the addition of the JIT) but having the option to compile WASM to native code ahead-of-time is still very valuable.

feniv··on Regular Expression Matching Can Be Simple and Fast (2007)
The author, Russ Cox, has a whole series of articles on the topic of regex - https://swtch.com/~rsc/regexp/

The rust Regex crate docs even refer to his posts as a reference since the rust version is based on his efficient RE2 Regex implementation at Google.

feniv··on Flying-V: Flying long distances energy-efficiently
From the title, I thought this would be about an airline flying using the V-formation like geese or military jets to reduce fuel.
feniv··on InNative: Run WebAssembly Outside the Sandbox at 95% Native Speed
WebAssembly on desktop and servers is maturing pretty rapidly! There are several backend interpreters already in Rust and Go (life). The native, compiled options are even faster, Fastly's Lucet compiler and runtime was one of the first to implement WASI (https://wasi.dev/): https://www.fastly.com/blog/announcing-lucet-fastly-native-w...

The differentiator for InNative seems to be the ability to bypass the sandbox altogether as well as additional native interop with the OS. Looks promising!

feniv··on Beyond Meat S-1
FYI - I've put up the extracted data and a quick visualisation here - https://thequarterly.org/S-1.html

Surprisingly, it doesn't look like the overall number of IPOs is any higher this year than in the past.

feniv··on The wave of unicorn IPOs
I've been curious about the recent wave of IPOs as well and did some data analysis here https://thequarterly.org/S-1.html

Despite several notable IPOs, the overall rate of S-1 filings doesn't seem higher this year.

feniv··on Beyond Meat S-1
I've been curious about the increased IPO rate as well. The data is all in EDGAR but it's not easy to find the trends - https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?company=&CIK=&type=...

I think it'll be a fun project to scrape the data and create some visualizations with it. Look out for a Show HN from me if you're interested!

feniv··on Joe Armstrong has died
I've only recently started learning Erlang (via Elixir), but I'm absolutely amazed by the underlying technology and the brilliant minds behind it.

I'll remember Joe by the several insightful, entertaining talks he's given in recent years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKXe3HUG2l4 in particular.

feniv··on Meshroom: Open Source 3D Reconstruction Software (2018) [video]
Is it possible to use the Apple Face ID sensor to perform a kinect-like 3D mapping of an environment or is the range of those sensors too limited for that?
feniv··on Earth’s magnetic field is acting up
Here's a gif from a 1995 supercomputer simulation of the reversal process - https://imgur.com/a/jgpZZBF "The tubes represent magnetic field lines, blue when the field points towards the center and yellow when away."

Original source: https://www.psc.edu/science/glatzmaier.html It took them a year of computing on a CRAY C90 and 2000 hours of processing.

feniv··on Earth’s magnetic field is acting up
Earth's magnetic pole has been known to switch sides in the past. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomagnetic_reversal

"183 reversals over the last 83 million years... A brief complete reversal, known as the Laschamp event, occurred only 41,000 years ago during the last glacial period. ... Geologists first noticed that some volcanic rocks were magnetized opposite to the direction of the local Earth's field.".
