felix··on How to Survive 80+ Hours of Programming Every Week
Alternately, don't do this. Survive 80+ hours a week by not working 80+ hours a week.
felix··on Hello, World
Today, I will leave behind the digital world that changed me from human to robot, I will begin building a tiny home and I will commemorate almost getting down to this honest days work by blogging about my new-experience-to-be working the soil.
felix··on How Etsy Alienated Its Crafters and Lost Its Soul
Is there an Image comics to Etsy's Marvel/DC? Curious if there's a place that re-captures the soul of indie crafts? Or if the successful crafters simply open up their own store and etsy remains the primary place for people to become successful crafters.
felix··on Coin, Wocket, Plastc: The all-in-one cards trying to sprint ahead of Apple Pay
Do you honestly shop at only places w/ NFC readers? Do you not eat at restaurants? Do you not take cash out at ATMs? I mean - sure Apple Pay is slicker and maybe more secure - but I can not imagine anyone now ditching plastic to go 100% Apple Pay, Google Wallet, whatever.

I like it when internet folk comment about current technology as legacy because some tiny fraction of its market now uses something new and shiny.

felix··on Coin, Wocket, Plastc: The all-in-one cards trying to sprint ahead of Apple Pay
Note. Shipping notice does not actually imply actually shipping, as I just discovered from their customer service agent. It just means they've created a shipping label for you and some time in the future (exactly when he didn't know) it will be used to ship you your coin.
felix··on Apple Accidentally reveals iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3
Does everyone kvetching about Apple's product line realize that they have many different product lines? And that there are only 2 iPads (which only people on HN refer to with a generation number, Apple just calls them the iPad Mini and iPad Air).

Steve jobs came back and simplified their desktop and laptop lineup from each having like 10 models to each having 2 or 3 clearly defined models. As they add phones, tablets and watches should each have only 1 model so that the absolute number of models in all of Apple's businesses stay constant?

felix··on Money Is Pouring into Tech Like It’s 1999, and That's Not Good
After trying to figure out if he was actually going to back up his argument anywhere - at some point I realized he was essentially saying that Uber is not different than Pets.com and stopped caring about the article.
felix··on Show HN: Shortwhale – Get fewer, shorter, and better emails
Am I expected to watch 15 minutes of videos in order to understand how and what to email Dan? It's an interesting choice - in the context of efficiency and saving time - to decide to put in videos (and some >3 minutes) to watch in the FAQ.

While I appreciate that a lot of email is a problem for many people - solutions need to be aware of the preciousness of everyone's time not just yours (the recipient's).

felix··on Entitlement issues (2009)
tl;dr GRRM is not your bitch. Remember that.
felix··on Free, Worldwide, Encrypted Phone Calls for iPhone
Makes sense - do you know if they will be re-branding RedPhone on Android? Just curious.
felix··on Free, Worldwide, Encrypted Phone Calls for iPhone
Curious why this is different than RedPhone - same company, same product(?), diff't platform - why not keep app branding?
felix··on Seriously Oracle? Who employs you guys?
It's versioning, not a floating point number... http://semver.org/
felix··on Seriously Oracle? Who employs you guys?
10.10 wins.
felix··on Most StartSSL certs will stay compromised
Is there any actual data anywhere (ANYWHERE) that suggests this is the case? Or statistically more the case than any other CA with a more traditional payment model?

Or is this hand wringing about the stupid people who got the free certificate from the stupid company that likes to give away free certificates but under normal circumstances they might actually charge people for some other part of the service that almost no one ever uses?

felix··on In defense of the Google Chef (2011)
Regardless of whether or not one feels he's deserving of this - it's the payment all parties agreed to. Do companies now consider compensation notional? Should they be able to take it back whenever they feel like it? If they think that actually a chef was totally useless for the first year - why stop with options - why not make him pay back 50% of his salary?

This whole line of reasoning is senseless. Compensation was agreed to - that in the end Zynga valued their options less than they ought to have should be irrelevant to employees retaining them.

felix··on Apple Explains How Secure iMessage Is
Much better than I expected, it may not be perfect but it seems like the most secure of the mainstream chat services. I would love to also have seen forward security but that's asking for quite a bit.
felix··on Technology and Wealth Inequality
He makes this article about technology, but talks consistently about the top 1%. He draws no direct connection between the top 1% and technology. Are people in the top 1% taking the google bus to work? What percent of them are in technology vs say... oh... finance?

I am not disputing that wealth inequality in the states has already reached incredibly disturbing levels but making this argument about technology (without any actual support for it) is not only silly but distracting to the core point.

felix··on Memo to Stripe: Winning the hearts of Valley startups is not winning payments
“It’s literally inconceivable that someone starting a company would choose to use Braintree or PayPal,” Rabois says. “Stripe has become the monopoly for new startups.”

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. Really.

Braintree and Venmo are services that he could not even conceive of a startup using? I suspect that they might have like.. um.. facts that might dispute that worldview.

felix··on The Mission of Tesla
Whatever you think of the blog post and Musk's spin - he puts his money where his mouth is. He's put into writing that if a 3rd party investigation into the fires finds anything they can do to improve safety - everyone gets a free retrofit. And short of an owner actively trying to destroy their car, Tesla's warranty will cover fire damage.

How many CEO's have that level of confidence in their product? Can you imagine Honda, Audi, BMW or any of the others reacting that way to something like this? And they've been around for much longer.

felix··on Britney Spears' music used by British navy to scare off Somali pirates
I don't know which is weirder, that the British Navy is using the Minmay Defense. Or that Britney Spears is Minmay.
felix··on The Coding Bootcamp That Wants To Be The CS Degree Of The Future
Is hiring so insane out west that companies are hiring people with 12 weeks of vocational experience 6 figures?
felix··on Logo, Bullshit & Co., Inc.
I'd say the most annoying part (of so many annoying parts) was when he says:

"The hard part is defining what your brand is and what it aims to become."

And then somehow supports that with the opposite:

"Is Yahoo “whimsical, yet sophisticated. Modern and fresh […] human, personal […] proud”? Currently, Yahoo is not associated with being whimsical or sophisticated, rather it is mostly boring and dull. It doesn’t portray modernity or freshness, it feels obsolete and dated."

Apparently had he been hired, he'd have designed a logo to what he believes are Yahoo's current brand - dullness and obsolescence instead of what he suggested at the outset which is what you want your brand to be.

felix··on The most useful thing in bash
Or there's always "set -o vi" then you can search through your history with /foo and n to find the next match.
felix··on Startups, you don’t need to be in Silicon Valley
Most businesses will succeed based on a variety of metrics, there are environmental factors that help some of those metrics.

Startups are hard - setting up shop in a startup hub helps you succeed at being a startup. There's support and best practices in the air for you at being a startup, which is super super helpful. SF being the largest and most robust of these hubs provides probably the greatest support on this front.

Nevertheless, it is sometimes forgotten that startups often don't exist in a startup vacuum - they interact on a variety of levels with the world and different locations will help them succeed in these other aspects. If your startup deals with publishers, being in the location where all those publishers are helps you immensely. If you deal with fashion being in a fashion hub helps you. If you're schtick is some fancy machine learning thing, maybe you want to set up shop by MIT. Etc.

So while generically being in a startup hub will help most startups more than other locations. Specifically your startup might see greater benefit elsewhere, or not in SF or whatever. And maybe, just maybe, you don't need these environmental boosts so just go wherever the hell you want to live. It's startups, break the rules when you want to - just know what you're giving up and what you're getting in return.

felix··on The San Francisco Safety Net
It is adorable that the poster feels like unemployed developers line the streets of New York, Boston and other non-sf tech hubs. That's really what I love most about being in NYC - it's so easy to hire developers.

Come on. We get that SF is rightly proud of its startup culture. It was the first and still the biggest. But really. There are other places too with their own very distinct advantages over SF for whole swathes of startups. Lets finally get past this SF is the best mentality and just remember that it is hard enough running a startup - let's help each other succeed wherever we are.

felix··on Scientists Inject Human Brain Cells Into Mice, Make Them Smarter
I know how this movie ends...

with the whole colony trying to get to the lee of the stone.

felix··on [dead]
I have nothing but worry about this movie. Nothing. But. Worry.
felix··on Are We An Unjust People?
Sorry to disappoint! But different felix. :) I'm still nice, though.
felix··on Are We An Unjust People?
I don't believe this was a Python problem or an issue of the Python community, it's a general issue plaguing technology. We're all trying to figure our way through it as best we can - and when things like this happen we need to do our best to stay calm and rational and keep everything in proportion. I think no matter who's "side" you were on in this debate, everyone can agree that most reactions were overblown for the actual events that occurred.

So I think as long as the Node community remains aware of the gender issues and goes to lengths to promote a friendly and tolerant environment that's the key. But to put it in perspective, I think that everyone should be doing that no matter your language of choice. :)
