fegu··on A software thing I built: GPS on a 25MHz 486-SX
Oh how I have fond memories of Dr.Dobb's journal.
fegu··on Google Hits 50% IPv6
I agree. NAT, while occasionally limiting, was a godsend. Just imagine how the world would look if everyone out there was at the mercy of a well configured router with firewall.
fegu··on Princeton mandates proctoring for in-person exams, upending 133 year precedent
Could it be non-proctoring has served Princeton by inflating grades due to some cheating, but only now have cheating become rampant enough that it must be curtailed to destroy the reputation entirely?
fegu··on Shingles Vaccine Linked to Slower Biological Aging in Older Adults
Very interesting. I got this vaccine (needs to be taken twice) last year. Since then my back pain linked to possible beginning bechterews, which I have had for about a year, is gone and has stayed away for 2 months now. Could be unrelated, but it is so pronounced that I have been looking for an explanation. Very happy with it.
fegu··on Stop using MySQL in 2026, it is not true open source
I used MariaDB in Azure, but got notified it was retired. Anyway, migrated to sqlite.
fegu··on Pfeilstorch
The arrow must have been a drag. "I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow to the neck."
fegu··on Succinct data structures
Memory is expensive. In the cloud especially. Using a succinct structure could enable cheaper computing for specific tasks. This benefits everyone.
fegu··on How rqlite is tested
There seems to be some copy pasta in the FAQ on if any node can be contacted for writes or reads, the paragraph on reads mentions writes.
fegu··on The Static Site Paradox
The same (pros use less, consumers pay for more) goes for internet connectivity. A techie knows he will never need or saturate more than, say, 200mbps. While a consumer will see the "200/500/1G" offer and opt for the middle.
fegu··on Show HN: OpenFreeMap – Open-Source Map Hosting
Just out of curiosity, is there no clever way to solve this within nginx with rules instead?
fegu··on Fort Botox, Where a Deadly Toxin Yields $2.8B Drug (2017)
This is very interesting and completely new to me (I'm European). Suddenly so much of the situation in the American health business makes sense.
fegu··on A seafood firm wants to farm octopus. Activists say they're too smart for that
This 20kg figure sounds wildly inaccurate. Fish feed is in general 75% plantbased. It is also very efficient (in terms of conversion rate to growth). Could this 20kg figure be decades old?
fegu··on Men on Viagra may reduce their Alzheimer's risk – study
Or these men simply lead more active lives with regular exercise. Hard to tell.
fegu··on Collision Detection (2015)
I enjoyed this :)
fegu··on Did English ever have a formal version of "you"? (2011)
To "the" or not to "the" before a name or noun.
fegu··on Popcount CPU instruction (2019)
Haskell added a function popCount in https://hackage.haskell.org/package/base-4.18.0.0/docs/Data-... some years ago to allow easy use of this operation where present.
fegu··on GNU Boot sent a cease and desist to Libreboot
It would be interesting to read more about this. You should start a blog :)
fegu··on Welcome to Wikifunctions
Most interesting functions use other functions. I did not find how they solve using existing functions, avoiding duplication of basic functionality, but also handling how things might break if an underlying function is independently updated. Does anyone know how they solve this, it is an interesting problem?
fegu··on Speeduino – Arduino based engine management
This is so cool, a nice push towards low cost repairs and de facto "right to repair" for hobbyists. The MX5 is also a cool and inexpensive test vehicle. Hope more models are added.
fegu··on In Praise of the Long Movie
Shorter is better
fegu··on Guantanamo inmates showing signs of 'accelerated ageing,' ICRC says
Over 20 years later, Guantanamo is still here. While most of the detainees are surely there for a reason, due process has not been observed. This will be a blemish on US history for a long time.
fegu··on Why TinyML is still so hard to get excited about
Different areas of the world have different trust levels. In northern Europe nobody would think twice about letting in the repairman, we trust each other. It is a great place to live.
fegu··on Tesla removes parking sensors, the results are predictably terrible
They did the same with rain sensor a few years ago. Result: auto rain wipe is still in beta in 2023!
fegu··on Analyzing multi-gigabyte JSON files locally
I have been hit by this many times. Do you know of any good resources on how to reduce this overhead? (Choosing other data structures, choosing other string types etc)
fegu··on Improved audio rendering with an optimised version of memcpy (2013)
I love when one can't tell if someone are serious or not. This made my day.
fegu··on Refurb weekend: Cobalt RaQ 2
Fond memories of web startups using these in aftermath of the dot com bust, such as Euroweb in Norway early 2000's.
fegu··on I quit infosec and I couldn't be happier
I am a CISO, but transitioning away. It is just plain boring. Lots of admin, reports, reviews, very little actual IT.
fegu··on How to build a super-slim smart mirror
The text says not to go lower than 300 nits for the display, but the linked display is 250 nits?
fegu··on Show HN: I made a tool that turns screenshots into dramatically angled photos
This is by a company in the middle of farmer county in Norway. Kudos!
fegu··on Coworkers are less ambitious; bosses adjust to the new order
This is my strategy. Global index funds. 7% is what you can expect. Inflation reduces the net yield. Research ways to avoid tax on stocks until you pay out to yourself, most countries have this in one form or another.
