fedorhk··on Ask HN: Have you ever been hired without an interview?
Yup, first time via internship. Another time I wrote an SDK for a company’s API and they’ve sent me an offer.

2 times I did an interview but CTOs new me upfront from either previous job or my public presentation so it was just a formality and in both cases they target to hire me upfront.

Hope this helps.

fedorhk··on Tell HN: YouTube requires watch history on for home screen
That’s great! I can now return to YT app instead of using it via a browser with a complex custom blocking to remove recommendations.
fedorhk··on In every country people think others are less happy than they themselves say (2017)
> Yup, and it shows that most people are happy but still think that most other people are unhappy

This (and alike) conclusion is likely wrong.

If there is a societal/cultural/political expectation to project happiness, people will say they are happy. Many people wouldn’t say they are unhappy to a stranger.

Fun fact, sociologists in Russia asking people nowadays “how do people around you feel? good/bad/worried/etc.” exactly because getting sincere answer to “how do you feel?” is impossible.

fedorhk··on I don't have hand function and need help replicating my assistive tech solution
Hi, just an idea, if the company is out of business, any way to ask them if they can open source their apps?
fedorhk··on Russians are trying to flee – data from Google Trends
Hey, have you considered https://www.e-resident.gov.ee/ can be an option to receive money outside Russian bank system.

My friend in Georgia (Russian) told me that while TBC refuse to open accounts, Bank of Georgia still do. Also seems like leading party pushing against this discrimination.

Situation may change fast (already?) so check Bank of Georgia asap.

fedorhk··on Poll: Where do you live?
Hong Kong & Macau are missed. Counting them as China would be quite a stretch.
fedorhk··on Why some tech workers are turning down jobs at TikTok
The important thing to understand, it's not because of some important business deadline. It's not about business goal at all.

It's a very cultural thing, partially a work culture rooted in factory-style production instead of innovation, quality, and mastery, partially a status thing a symbol of control and "ownership" over the workforce. Welcome to China.

fedorhk··on Why some tech workers are turning down jobs at TikTok
> “Everyone there is utterly miserable, and life is too short,” the source said. “During my first year before the pandemic hit, I can count possibly four or five weekends during the year where I did not work.”

Just typical Mainland China company, checking HQ location should be enough to make the right decision.

Addition (from reply below):

"It's a very cultural thing, partially a work culture rooted in factory-style production instead of innovation, quality, and mastery, partially a status thing, a symbol of control and "ownership" over the workforce. Welcome to China."

fedorhk··on Ask HN: [Urgent] Schizophrenic brother in US jail
get him a lawyer
fedorhk··on Ask HN: How do we know Signal or Telegram don't store our data on their servers?
Isn't it as they describe it? Unless you created e2e chats specifically (Secret Chats).
fedorhk··on Ask HN: Who is working on fully decentralized social networking?
> My concern is that, while seizing control of social networking from big corporations is surely a great idea, it may be initially inundated (and thus, socially formulated) by the same whackjob culture that flocked to Parler from Twitter. > How can we ensure that balanced and healthy communities form on the decentralized web?

Sigh. The problem with all decentralized platforms/solutions is that they're focused on "decentralized", not on "platform".

So high level plan should be: 1. Make platform that actually compete with w/ FB, Twitter, etc. 2. Decentralize it.
