fblp··on The Drivers Cooperative
I would probably pay 20% more and wait twice as long to contribute to a worker owned coop with each ride. Come to sf asap!
fblp··on The algorithms that make Instacart roll
This is a elegant writeup that explains how instacart works with detail that I feel like I've never seen from other companies that face similar challenges (uber, doordash). Thank you to the authors!
fblp··on Ask HN: What was the biggest contributor to your happiness in the past year?
Meditation practice
fblp··on Launch HN: Chatwoot (YC W21) – Open-Source Alternative to Intercom, Zendesk
I'm wondering if you've considered an additional option - "donation subscriptions". For people who are deriving a lot of value from a fork, and want to support you!
fblp··on Compensation as a Reflection of Values
Hey thanks for this response - i didn't read the that as an explicitly example of how you'd handled it. More the blog acknowledged that it might not scale to this. Good luck!
fblp··on Not knowing how to flirt is the main reason behind “involuntary singlehood”
The headline is misleading as it suggests causation rather than correlation. The article actually states this:

>>""reverse causation” might also play a role here. A longer time being single, for example, may lead to worsening flirting skills. It might also cause people to conclude that they have poor flirting skills, which can lead to hopelessness, which in turn can lead to putting in less effort to find a partner. "

fblp··on Honda's now selling the first production car with level 3 self-driving
> "Honda claims Sensing Elite was tested in 10 million unique simulated scenarios and 800,000 miles of real-world testing before it decided the tech was ready ready for primetime"

This is not much compared to Tesla's 3 billion autopilot miles and Waymo's 20 million driven miles.

fblp··on Compensation as a Reflection of Values
This company looks to be pre-revenue and raised a $20mil seed in late 2019. Although I like the ideal of everyone being valued the same - this may be easier to do when the company has plenty of VC cash and just needs to make cool stuff. Over time, people who are more committed and more experienced will emerge.

Are the founders going to get the same pay as the new admin hire in year 4 when there's only 1 year's runway left?

Who's going to leave first - your junior sales hire on 170k, or the sales hire that has been with the company 4 years, has a book of business that generates 5x more revenue (that is now helping pay for this salary policy) and has only received 5k raises each year?

fblp··on Woice.me – async voice communication for teams: work, at your own pace
Understood on voice messages substituting written communication - but what about when they substitute synchronous meetings and calls? Sometimes async voice can be better where you can communicate a couple pages of thoughts in a few minute, with tone of voice.
fblp··on A Terse Guide On Hiring Your First Engineering Manager
Well said my fellow Australian. Hierarchies can push people into all kinda of tribal behavior depending on the org. Checkout the book https://www.reinventingorganizations.com/ for some alternate frameworks!
fblp··on Feedback Welcome: I am developing an e-paper calendar as a consumer product
Get the panel separately and work with a local woodshop on the frame so that you can test lots of prototypes. Then send your frame design back to wherever the whole thing is getting assembled (assume, china).

Also, how much does an e-ink panel like that cost these days?

fblp··on Expanding our testing in San Francisco
Yes I'm wondering how they're going to deal with vandalism in a city like sf.
fblp··on Element (Matrix chat app) suspended from the Google Play Store
Hi there, if you're a small business impacted by this please comment how below, i can raise the issue with congressional representatives via the national small business association. I've seen a couple posts about this already.

From my perspective, decentralized, free and open source software enables and supports a range of small businesses. The replacements for tools like Element are big-tech tools ranging from Whatsapp (Facebook) to Slack (Salesforce).

fblp··on Tamale King: ecommerce website from 1990s
Is this actually an ecommerce site? I can't see a way to buy.
fblp··on Poll: Do you currently work in tech?
I haven't worked in tech/IT for 5 years and i keep coming back to Hacker News for the content and insightful comments. I'm curious what proportion of the community currently works in tech?
fblp··on Tesla’s charging stations left other manufacturers in the dust
Suggested improvement: To be eligible for government electric car subsidies the car maker should meet certain standards for their chargers and charging stations that enable interoperability and a more competitive market.
fblp··on Split keyboards and how to build them
I'm curious if anyone else is wanting a split keyboard tray to go with these split keyboards? I'm currently making one - 2 individual trays that can be moved in and out and tucked under the desk.
fblp··on I made Deskreen, open source app to make any device a second screen for computer
Can you gleen anything from how Facebook messenger does screen sharing on Android and iOS?
fblp··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
The author uses the word "united" liberally, implying there was some kind of collusion between Amazon, Apple and Google. I would imagine it was quite the opposite, they each would have independently banned/limited Parler regardless of what the other company did. Parler also doesn't compete with any of those companies. It competes with Facebook and Twitter. So where's the anti-competitive conduct?
fblp··on Sriwijaya Air flight SJ182, a Boeing 737, has disappeared from radar
Very informative article, thank you ^ "The water is about 15 to 16 meters deep at the crash site“ Although this is tragic, the relatively shallow water will make this a faster cleanup and investigation compared to other recent crashes.
fblp··on California law bans delivery apps from listing a restaurant without an agreement
I agree with this law in principle but i hate that it is getting implemented at a state level with specific industry language. Broad federal consumer protection laws could be expanded. For example, misrepresenting an affiliation with a business by omission could be made an offense regardless of the industry. The test would be "would a reasonable person think this (intermediary) is affiliated?". This is inspired by Australian Consumer Law.
fblp··on FAA issuing new rules to allow drones to fly over people and at night
i think parachutes for drones is a great idea and i hope advocates for that to the FAA.
fblp··on A drone pilot was fined $182K by the FAA
Thanks for sharing. That video to me indicates that he has a child-like blind love for his drones. I imagine he couldn't give up that love even as he got the letters from the FAA.
fblp··on MDMA-assisted couples therapy investigated in pilot trial
Interesting. Got a link to a study?
fblp··on The Death of Tony Hsieh: A Spiral of Alcohol, Drugs and Extreme Behavior
I agree with the sentiment of your comment, but in this case it did appear that he was seeing a therapist so he was getting some professional help.

I think the help that may be missing is friends who are "lovingly firm" with him sooner. But it's easy to assume a billionaire is going to be fine and "tony is just being tony".

fblp··on A chain cuts through a capsized cargo ship filled with cars
"Insurance losses on the ship are estimated at $70 - 80 million, and $80 million in its contents."
fblp··on An upcoming story about Coinbase
I think the specific pre-emptive denial of claims by specific ex-employees reads as righteous and dismissive. Who knows what is going to be published in the final version? They later state that only 2 of the four claims were investigated by third parties.

"likely quote three former Coinbase employees and a former contractor by name, and include photos of some of them....The story will likely imply that Black employees were discriminated against during this process; this is false."

fblp··on Poll: Have you experienced depressive symptoms over the past two weeks?
woah - how do you make polls on HN? and thank you for posting this.

Also: this is an Australian initiative that encourages you to ask yourselves and others: Are you OK? https://www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask

fblp··on Launch HN: Gather.Town (YC S19) – Spatial video chat for remote teams
Remember accessibility. The avatars are already quite small. I'd suggest something obvious like you could highlight yourself green or wear a green hat if you want to talk. You don't need to imitate real life - leverage the fact that you can manifest obvious queues in the digital world. If only we could make instantly make ourselves bright green in the real world when we want to meet people (sometimes people use wristbands or necklaces to do this IRL)!
