fatherzine··on Gold prices are hitting records
Excellent idea. minimum / median / x% quartiles.
fatherzine··on Gold prices are hitting records
inflation is emergent of interest. interest is multiplicative, which compounds into an exponential. sadly i am no boltzmann, so i can't provide a formal derivation -- challenge for the mathematically gifted amongst us.
fatherzine··on Gold prices are hitting records
Exactly. Use gasoline instead.

See e.g https://www.macrotrends.net/1380/gold-to-oil-ratio-historica.... Over 80 years (since 1946), the ratio held stable within 10-40 range, with a few brief spikes. The variance from the average held in a band [-2x, 2x], with a few brief spikes of ~ +-4x.

See also e.g. https://www.creditdonkey.com/gas-price-history.html for the raw price of gasoline, exponentially shaped. The increase over 80 years (since 1946, to match the ratio dataset) is 15x.

Extra wrinkle. The exponent of the exponential is not quite constant over time, currency can debase much faster than one would naively expect by extrapolating historical trends.

Edit. For completness, the BLS inflation index tracks a price inflation from 1946 to 2023 of, guess what, 15x. https://www.in2013dollars.com/us/inflation/1946

prices, of all goods, inflate exponentially

the relative value of specific goods fluctuates within a small constant

in the long run, the exponential dominates the linear

----

thus the price of gold is a yardstick of the exponential inflation of prices, irrespective of the relative fluctuations of gold vs food vs energy

fatherzine··on Gold prices are hitting records
the gold price serves as an independent yardstick for the level of real inflation. it defeats the purpose to 'adjust for inflation'.

'adjusting for inflation, prices have been remarkably stable for the past century'

fatherzine··on Ask HN: Why is it taken for granted that LLM models will keep improving?
what if we already did and all that's missing is the skeletomuscular system?
fatherzine··on Ask HN: Why is it taken for granted that LLM models will keep improving?
unbounded possibilities! imagine, and hear me out, asking the box: 'how do I build a box that can answer fairly complicated questions', and getting the output in an automatized way all the way from atoms, ready to be plugged into the power grid.
fatherzine··on Ask HN: Why is it taken for granted that LLM models will keep improving?
"create a mechanical god that will rule the planet" -- on what basis people call this 'optimism'?!
fatherzine··on Ask HN: Why is it taken for granted that LLM models will keep improving?
a more apt analogy is Moore's law

fatherzine··on Why the decline of US power has been greatly exaggerated
They do pay tribute. Slightly obfuscated behind the financial order that comes with that 'protection'. Look up debt levels, or how ownership of strategic assets changed hands in the historical blink of eye since eg Eastern Europe joined NATO / EU.

The point is to instill fear through humiliation. Bonus if you quit on your own, so they don't have to pay severance.

If only. How about product placement seamlessly melded into any digital interaction? BRB, prompting ChatGPT for a YCombinator funding pitch.

they have the potential to take over the control systems of the explosive stuff. including the decision making processes of humans themselves.

to quote none other than sama, oct 2023: "i expect ai to be capable of superhuman persuasion well before it is superhuman at general intelligence, which may lead to some very strange outcomes" https://twitter.com/sama/status/1716972815960961174

also, manufacturing robots and self-driving cars.

"just like any other tool in hands of humans" -- the scale of damage a tool can do matters, e.g. civilization cannot withstand nukes being sold at walmart. and, of course, self learning will be here this decade.

"95% of the staff" -- this is Kim Jong Un approval rate territory. caution advised.
fatherzine··on My north star for the future of AI
picking the ethical option will not create financial value for key stakeholders. the metrics are misaligned. smart and wise people spent 2000 years seeking an workaround for this problem. there is none. there are only convoluted excuses.
fatherzine··on OpenAI staff threaten to quit unless board resigns
Upper management is usually compensated with financially meaningful ownership stakes.
fatherzine··on OpenAI staff threaten to quit unless board resigns
This rings true, though I will throw in a bit of nuance. It's not greed, the desire of making as much money as possible, that is the shaping factor. Rather the critical factor is building a product for which people are willing to spend their hard earned money on. Making money is a byproduct of that process, and not making money is a sign that the product, and by extension the process leading to the product, is deficient at some level.
fatherzine··on Meta disbanded its Responsible AI team
The second paragraph is veering extremely close to shamanic person worship territory -- shamans have privileged access to the otherworld that we mere mortals lack.
fatherzine··on Meta disbanded its Responsible AI team
not entirely sure what you refer to, but here's a possibly flawed and possibly unrelated analogy: while our nervous systems depend on low intensity electric fields to function, subjecting them to artificial fields orders of magnitude more intense is well documented to cause intense pain, and as the intensity increases, eventually to death by electrocution. i submit that, sadly, we are going to observe the same phenomenon with intelligence as the parameter.

there are rumors that the latest gen drones in ukraine use crude embedded vision ai to increase terminal accuracy. launch and iterate, this will only get more lethal.
fatherzine··on Meta disbanded its Responsible AI team
oh, these teams are useless bureaucratic busybodies that only mask the real issue: ai is explosively powerful, and nobody has the slightest clue on how to steward that power and avoid the pain ai will unfortunately unleash.
fatherzine··on Meta disbanded its Responsible AI team
a multimodal llm is a general purpose device to churn sensor inputs into a sequence of close to optimal decisions. the 'language' part is there to reduce the friction of the interface with humans, it's not an inherent limitation of the llm. not too farfetched to imagine a scenario where you point to a guy in a crowd and tell a drone to go get him, and the drone figures out a close to optimal sequence of decisions to make it so.
fatherzine··on Meta disbanded its Responsible AI team
not sure it's fair to trivialize ai risks. for just one example, the pen is mightier than the sword.
fatherzine··on Update on the OpenAI drama: Altman and the board had till 5pm to reach a truce
The only winning move is not to play. Sutskever has no clue how to contain the genie, nobody has. Why do we put our hope in some engineer or another, beats me. There are throngs waiting in the wings for their shot at ephemeral glory and riches.
fatherzine··on Why Aren't More People Getting Married?
such a sad painful subject. and toxic to boot. in seeking a partner the women in the article are looking in all the wrong places. humbly submitting that seeking a husband may lead to different outcomes. though that requires a level of commitment and sacrifice that our society can't fathom anymore. for either gender. good luck and godspeed.
fatherzine··on What Ilya Sutskever really wants
we are reading 'panic' the same way :) fight panic all you want, but ai rendering the vast majority of humans redundant is quite a more pressing problem to fight, i would say.
