fantasybroker··on Ottopot, a sophisticated DIY MIDI controller
Monogram has a 3 slider controller, plus it's modular so you can build something for your specific workflow.
fantasybroker··on Ottopot, a sophisticated DIY MIDI controller
You might be able to combine a small physical MIDI controller with a cheap phone/tablet for controlling more advanced features like envelopes.
fantasybroker··on Fixing annoying blue standby lights
A raised plexiglass shelf/cover, perhaps?
fantasybroker··on Ottopot, a sophisticated DIY MIDI controller
This looks great. If only I had the time and the skill to build something like that!

If anyone is looking for an even smaller (non-DIY) MIDI controller, Monogram and Intech offer really great options: modular, snappable desktop devices.

For a long time it puzzled me how few small controllers existed on the market, with the only ones I could find being DIY. Personally, I rarely need more than 1-2 knobs/faders.

fantasybroker··on Fixing annoying blue standby lights
That's a great tip! I bought an air purifier that has a very bright blue light illuminating the entire room at night.

Now if only I can find a way to disable its annoying on/off chimes.

fantasybroker··on Microdot: Yet another Python web framework
Thanks for posting this! I am not planning any new projects but this is a cool example of implementing a micro-framework in Python. Might just use it as a reference to build my own.

As a side note, I noticed you have Flask tutorials, it could be interesting to make a tutorial on writing a framework from scratch using Microdot as a production ready example.

I don't have much experience with soldering, but would it be possible to buy a device that uses this chip and take it out/re-use? E.g. this listing in my area: https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/atq/d/san-jose-tasmota-smar...
fantasybroker··on Email addresses are not good 'permanent' identifiers for accounts
From what I understand "core" is a central part of a fruit.
fantasybroker··on Email addresses are not good 'permanent' identifiers for accounts
I mean - yes? I understand what a stable identifier is. Having a unique user ID in a database doesn't magically enable likes on all features. But for the purpose of this discussion I limited my opinion to "public services", i.e. services with a social aspect, which overwhelmingly have this mechanic (to such an absurd extent that I can "like" payments made by people I don't know on Venmo).
fantasybroker··on Email addresses are not good 'permanent' identifiers for accounts
Yup, I used to use them back then.
fantasybroker··on Email addresses are not good 'permanent' identifiers for accounts
It’s a list, not a comparison.
fantasybroker··on Synctify – Sync a music drop with a time in the real world
Contextually I like the word "drop" more too. Saying that, I might want to sync a moment in time with a particular Yann Tiersen's piano phrase that's hardly a drop, more like a favorite bit that I want to hear right when the clock strikes midnight.
fantasybroker··on How to run a small social network (2019)
Right, I partially misunderstood your idea. For notifications and such you would need to modify the source code at a deeper level. But for just customizing the home feed (update steam?) changing the theme might be enough.

Ideally there should be a personal ActivityPub instance implementation, something that doesn't require hosting all Mastodon content and can be easily customized in various ways.

> No it doesn't. There are zero people on the registry for urinating in public. This is a myth that pedophiles like to claim.

Yes it does. Puppy killers like to claim that it doesn't. /s

Here are a few examples with names: https://www.menshealth.com/trending-news/a19541024/you-might...

There is a ton of posts from lawyers confirming the fact that in many states you can get convicted for public urination and put on the sex offender list. For example, here is a post from a Texas-based lawyer: https://www.craiggreeninglaw.com/can-you-really-become-a-sex...

The reason it's so hard to estimate the real number of these cases is that the crime is listed as indecent exposure or lewdness.

fantasybroker··on Synctify – Sync a music drop with a time in the real world
Hi. I like the concept but could not figure out what this app does before I read your comment. I am familiar with the concept of a "drop" in modern music but didn't immediately associate it with the feature. An example or a more detailed description could be helpful.
fantasybroker··on How to run a small social network (2019)
The only thing I can think of is hosting your own ActivityPub server (e.g. Mastodon) and customizing the theme. Maybe that's the future of more individually-tailored online experiences.
fantasybroker··on How to run a small social network (2019)
Not sure what your experience is, for me forums still work great but they have transitioned from general social hangouts to very specialized niche communities. I don't mind that and still get a lot of value from e.g. music production forums like Mod Wiggler and Gearspace. However, other than HN I don't frequent any other small-ish communities where conversations can go outside of the stated purpose.

How do you keep track of all local, state, and federal laws?
fantasybroker··on How to run a small social network (2019)
I don't use that, but AFAIK on most existing social networks you can follow tags instead of users.

For many people Telegram will never be a viable option. It has strong ties to Russia and is being run from Dubai. While maybe it's not big tech (i.e. Silicon Valley), it definitely lacks trust as an entity.

Not sure why you have such a strong opinion on this. There are countless examples of people suffering immense harm for trivial things that are considered unlawful in some jurisdictions. And no, "so change the law" is not the full answer, that's just blaming the victim.

fantasybroker··on Email addresses are not good 'permanent' identifiers for accounts
"Sex offender" at least in the US is a ridiculous classification that includes people who peed in a fountain while drunk. I don't think they should be punished for the rest of their life and be on a public list with serial rapists.
fantasybroker··on Email addresses are not good 'permanent' identifiers for accounts
Personally, I like the idea of hardware-tied auth (phone/FIDO2 key), that could work for me eventually. However, I am also one of the "anon-in-the-ether" people and don't want a permanent identity on any public service.

A permanent identity comes with many additional mechanics, far beyond just a stable identifier. The biggest one is post karma (including likes): IMO it's at the core of almost everything what's wrong with the modern web. It introduces vile personal and group incentives and leads to an eventual destruction of any honest conversation. While this mechanic exists on public forums, I won't use a permanent identity.

fantasybroker··on Compare Google, Bing, Marginalia, Kagi, Mwmbl, and ChatGPT
On the plus side - in addition to Marginalia's own success, you can take partial credit for how good Kagi search results are (IIRC Marginalia's index is one of the sources for Kagi search results). So... thank you for that!
fantasybroker··on Compare Google, Bing, Marginalia, Kagi, Mwmbl, and ChatGPT
Thanks! If you are that "single person" who built Marginalia... hope you are not taking my criticism personally. I am more annoyed by this blog post that uses a few handpicked queries to present generalized long winded conclusions that are completely disproven when using a different set of queries.
fantasybroker··on Compare Google, Bing, Marginalia, Kagi, Mwmbl, and ChatGPT
I think for single word queries like that Wikipedia covers more ground than a dictionary. Personal preference, perhaps. If I need a definition I search for "define dildo" (Kagi shows Merriam-Webster, Oxford, etc dictionary entries).
fantasybroker··on Compare Google, Bing, Marginalia, Kagi, Mwmbl, and ChatGPT
I am not sure what the intention of this post is. In my handpicked results Kagi far outperforms Marginalia.

#1 "Gordon ramsey" (misspelled "Gordon Ramsay"). Marginalia shows "The Life I Imagine: are my cheeks red?". Kagi corrects to Gordon Ramsay and shows relevant results.

#2 "Ukraine war". Marginalia shows an article about the Russian Orthodox church and a Substack post about the war. Kagi shows Wikipedia, Al Jazeera, etc up-to-date summaries about the war.

#3 "Dildo". Top post on Marginalia is "Students for Concealed Carry Embraces UT Dildos | Students for Concealed Carry". Top posts on Kagi are Wikipedia (read) and Amazon (buy).

> How is Marginalia, a search engine built by a single person, so good?

Because it's not good?
