falseprofit··on This page knows your battery charge level (unless you're using Firefox)
If I go to a restaurant but don’t let them know how hungry I am, is that fraud?
falseprofit··on Show HN: YouTube banned adblockers so I built an extension to skip their ads
Would it be ok for me to manually mute the ad and spend the 20 seconds on a bit of breath work? I'd hate to do wrong by the monopoly...
falseprofit··on We Automated Bullshit
I dug around to find the study you're referring to (after a now-deleted comment asked about it). Is it this one?

https://hurlburt.faculty.unlv.edu/heavey-hurlburt-2008.pdf

If so, the interpretation you describe seems pretty far off base.

Also, my impression is that that meme was not sparked by a psychological study, but that a few people did draw on this study to justify it.

falseprofit··on 37, the median value for the second prime factor of an integer
I'm taking the median of the limiting distribution, and I agree that the sequence of medians you describe does not converge.
falseprofit··on 37, the median value for the second prime factor of an integer
2.5, the median value for the first prime factor of an integer
falseprofit··on No Man's Sky just keeps getting better
That does sound shallow, actually. Once you learn to leave behind the vain realm of sensory experience, then you'll really be able to enjoy quality video games.
falseprofit··on Proxima Fusion looks to take stellarators commercial
you think that high pressure material would just sit there in space, absent gravity?
falseprofit··on Inside the Wuhan lab weeks before Covid
Can't they block the subdomain?
falseprofit··on Tell HN: ChatGPT is probably leaking chat data
I can confirm that this is definitely happening, and people are talking about it in the OpenAI Discord server. I've also found other users' email addresses by finding them auto-populated into the email field on the payments page.
falseprofit··on Microbes are 'active engineers' in Earth's rock-to-life cycle
Why prescient? Did it really predate the relevant scientific understanding?
falseprofit··on Microbes are 'active engineers' in Earth's rock-to-life cycle
Rocks get chewed on by literally anything. Air, water, and yes, microbes.
falseprofit··on Psychological and psychiatric terms to avoid
It's standard practice to plot independent variables on the x-axis and dependent on the y. To my knowledge, this is how learning curves are typically plotted as well, and the use of "steep" is usually a misnomer.

Is there a reason you believe people have this unintuitive plot in mind, rather than simply conflating with the difficulty of physically scaling a steep slope?

falseprofit··on Discovering Novel Algorithms with AlphaTensor
In practice, the constant factor and the exponent need to be considered together. The constant factor on its own is very uninteresting, practically meaningless without the exponent. >”Even if all you cared about was the exponent”

There are really only two things to care about: the exponent on its own, or practical runtime.

The claim is that there is a significant range of computations for which Strassen has stood as the fastest.

falseprofit··on SIM swapper abducted, beaten, held for ransom
The term “trigger” in this context was initially used by mental health professionals in the context of setting off post-traumatic stress. I believe this here is an example of this primary (non-problematic) usage. It then got politicized and associated with “snowflakes”, and endlessly mocked and memed. Actually may be that more people know the word now from right-wing trash talk than from mental health concerns.
falseprofit··on Mindustry – Open-Source Game
I see where you’re coming from, and I guess I’m still undecided on the issue. I’d have to re-examine in a specific case if such a rip-off were to be more popular.
falseprofit··on Mindustry – Open-Source Game
I don’t think that’s right. Assets aren’t the only aspect of a program which can be protected under IP law. (Not that I take the law to be the paragon of ethical guidelines)
falseprofit··on Why thinking hard makes us feel tired
More discussion on the article in Science here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32435019

Top commenter there seems to find the reporting problematic. I’d love to see more discussion in that thread from anyone who is knowledgable.

falseprofit··on Mindustry – Open-Source Game
Some of those listed are remakes of games which are still being developed and sold by their original independent developers (e.g. Baba Is You, Stardew Valley…). Is this acceptable?
falseprofit··on Two weeks in, the Webb Space Telescope is reshaping astronomy
So feed them.
falseprofit··on Two weeks in, the Webb Space Telescope is reshaping astronomy
The appropriate levels of hype and/or excitement to discoveries in science and math are entirely subjective. You just aren’t as excited about it as their target audience.
falseprofit··on Two weeks in, the Webb Space Telescope is reshaping astronomy
I think you mean galaxy-by-galaxy.
falseprofit··on Two weeks in, the Webb Space Telescope is reshaping astronomy
The cost is nothing next to what we spend on war
falseprofit··on Two weeks in, the Webb Space Telescope is reshaping astronomy
What part?
falseprofit··on Show HN: A JWST/Hubble deepfield comparison on a zoomable/pannable map interface
Check out some of the reddest galaxies in the Webb image. Even the big ones are entirely invisible on the Hubble image.
falseprofit··on Show HN: A JWST/Hubble deepfield comparison on a zoomable/pannable map interface
Just Wonderful Space Telescope
falseprofit··on Show HN: A JWST/Hubble deepfield comparison on a zoomable/pannable map interface
The furthest back potentially visible stuff before the dark age won’t be galaxies, which formed after the first stars. We still have never seen a first generation star, and I’d be surprised if Webb could.
falseprofit··on Google almost convinced me to spend $400 on useless laser treatments
I took that comment to mean they had specific treatments in mind they wanted to try, and had difficulty convincing docs to write the Rx.
falseprofit··on Quordle: Four Wordles in One
One of today’s words appeared recently. I don’t know how many 5-letter words there are, but I feel like the optimal time between appearances should be a bit longer. (Not to mention this word is an alternative spelling, which may be frustrating to some.)
falseprofit··on Uyghur kids detail abuse at China's boarding schools in Xinjiang
The above mentioned deflection is weird, but this implication isn’t there. The article is from NPR.
falseprofit··on Joni Mitchell joins Neil Young in protest against Spotify
sure, if the buffoon was spreading dangerous misinformation and misogyny.
