falseprofit··on Ancient Roman Board Game
The wear on the pieces and board was not an input for the AI tool they used.

Also, they didn’t “ask” an AI anything, as it was not a natural language AI tool.

falseprofit··on How physicists track and trap the elusive neutrino
Maybe it isn’t changing mass at all, and what’s changing is just the probability distribution resulting from a hypothetical flavor measurement. If we could measure the mass (collapse to mass eigenstate), I think I understand we would see no oscillation.
falseprofit··on How physicists track and trap the elusive neutrino
Not a physicist, but here are a couple Wikipedia excerpts I found: From page “Conservation of mass”:

“In general, mass is not conserved. The conservation of mass is a law that holds only in the classical limit.”

From page “Neutrino oscillation”:

“Neutrino oscillation arises from mixing between the flavor and mass eigenstates of neutrinos. That is, the three neutrino states that interact with the charged leptons in weak interactions are each a different superposition of the three (propagating) neutrino states of definite mass. Neutrinos are produced and detected in weak interactions as flavour eigenstates[a] but propagate as coherent superpositions of mass eigenstates.[23]”

falseprofit··on Yes, It's Fascism
The U.S. itself has been engaging in similar behavior around the world for a long time. The specific relevance of Israel may only be a combination of recency and amount of U.S. attention.

But “scapegoat”?

“Israel did 9/11” is treating them as a scapegoat. “IDF often calls men they killed terrorists with no justification” is just stating a fact.

falseprofit··on Work disincentives hit the near-poor hardest (2022)
I would guess that was not a joke. The benefits could drop all the way to 0 at a reasonable point unless you impose the stronger condition that the function be analytic.
falseprofit··on Three kinds of AI products work
I actually agree with your premise of ruling out “not at all”. I was just responding to your characterization of “if ever”.

I’m not quite as certain as you are, though. Just because a technology is possible does not mean it is inevitable.

falseprofit··on Three kinds of AI products work
Let’s say there are three options: {soon, later, not at all}. Ruling out only one to arrive at {later, not at all} implies less knowledge than ruling out two and asserting {later}.

Awareness of a fundamental limitation would eliminate possibilities to just {not at all}, and the phrasing would be “never”, rather than “not soon, if ever”.

The phrasing was matter of fact. And there is nothing inherently wrong with reposting. Certain other websites have developed a culture opposed to it, but I have yet to see that here.

falseprofit··on The Business of Betting on Catastrophe
Felt like the article ended before a thesis statement.
falseprofit··on The Business of Betting on Catastrophe
One aspect worth pointing out is that ILS are transferring insurance risk outside of the insurance industry. Appetite has gone up and down but e.g. hedge funds would normally not be available to assume insurance risk otherwise.
falseprofit··on Brain aging shows nonlinear transitions, suggesting a midlife "critical window"
If it isn’t, it should be. No one asks in a forum because they want to hear from an LLM.
falseprofit··on 'Obelisks': New Class of Life Has Been Found in Human Digestive System
One thing that makes soft sciences softer is that it is inherently more difficult to achieve the same statistical significance, due to both higher underlying variances and logistics of obtaining large samples. Publishing with higher p-values results in lower reproducibility by definition.

The problem with psychology is that despite the fact that the subject matter is inherently more difficult to study, researchers are forced into the same publish-or-perish system as biologists and mathematicians. A higher degree of skepticism towards new studies might technically be prejudice, but it’s certainly justified.

falseprofit··on South Korean president declares martial law, parliament votes to lift it
I’m not sure the military is ignoring the constitution. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe they’re supposed to follow the president’s orders.
falseprofit··on Square Roots and Maxima
Median and mean are not the same distribution. Consider three uniform values. For the median to be small two need to be small, but the mean needs three.

I think order statistics are more useful than what you described, because “min” and “max” are themselves quantiles and more conceptually similar to “median” than to “mean”.

Trying to imagine how to bridge from min/max to mean, I guess you could take weighted averages with weights determined by order, but I can’t think of a canonical way to do that.

falseprofit··on Corporate HR is taking "Equity" out of DEI
There’s a great cartoon here which makes the case for “equity”:

https://unitedwaynca.org/blog/equity-vs-equality/

I find it compelling in the context of social services, but it’s no surprise that goal-oriented organizations are shifting away from this overtly redistributive focus.
