The rare, fully-vaccinated, delta / delta plus breakthrough cases tend to be very mild. Anti-vaxxers are an existential threat to sane people because that's where variants are going to evolve that could defeat current vaccines.

If we're going to "optimize" life for as "little risk as possible," then optimizing for the wrong things is inevitable. I can see WfH if commute times, costs-of-living, and 99% of coworkers are assholes, but then there's social interaction, facetime, and how are people going to get promoted if their effort goes unnoticed.

Dayam. Change the carpet or take off your shoes already.

This is a no zap safe-space, unless it's a consensual thing.

Cool. It reminds me of one of the characters from Shooting Fish (1997) who has a penchant for "psychoanalyzing" mid-century electric appliances so he can repair them. And, Brazil with needless complexity everywhere.

Pepperidge Farms.... D: NOOOOOO

My grandmother made those in her Sunbeam toaster before loading them with room-temperature butter and Laura Scudder's smooth peanut butter. (Yes, my grandmother kept butter at room temperature but refrigerated the eggs. Go figure... grandmothers.)

The iTailer will shutdown all servers for that model on Jan 10, 2021, rendering it a glorified paperweight. Sorry.

They said the next newer model of that will no longer receive updates at the same time.

I don't want an ESP32 or an ARM in my toaster.

I don't want bluetooth in my toaster. That shit is hard to clean.

I don't want a flashing OLED emoji on my toaster judging my diet. I do plenty of that myself: flashing emoji.

I don't want a toaster with a "personality." I want it to toast, only toast, and nothing but the toast, so help its electronic soul.

Sunbeam Radiant Control: ride or die. Anything made after the 60's is junk by definition.

failwhaleshark··on Sorry, we replaced that old technology, “see-through glass”
Speaking of see-through.

Has anyone ever seen two-way glass that allows bidirectional observation within proximity of it's surface but diminishes with distance of either observer or view-field depth?

It was used in a pair of bathrooms (men's and women's) for the washbasin "mirror" at a restaurant or nightclub on or near 6th Street ATX about 2004. It allowed washroom patrons to see each other in the other bathroom, but not past a certain distance within each bathroom and didn't work if the viewer were far away.

failwhaleshark··on Ask HN: Feeling guilty for doing the bare minimum at work
Currently, I cannot read even one page of a book much less an entire book. I also get bored of people and interests easily.

Which type? I have ADHD-PI diag at 38, but it maybe a direct consequence of low testosterone.

It's interesting that the major parts of my body are very masculine while others aren't as much as they were. And, it's not Klinefelter's or a karyotype issue. Attractive members of my preferred gender for adult activities are frequently "shouting" overt interest nonverbally that doesn't register to me as anything other than a potential threat. My instincts should be of curiosity, delight, and novelty.

Starting on clomid tomorrow because the memory, concentration, alertness, and fluid/crystalized intelligences became disabled to the point where I cannot work. I may also have to take hCG too. An endocrinologist has to research the primary cause because it could be an HPG tumor or something else, because the low T issue is absurd.

failwhaleshark··on The Most Dangerous Censorship
Why I carry weapons for defensive purposes but speak facts and reality even if other may wish to impugn or murder me for it. Tribal ideologies are intellectual dishonesty cults incarnate. Saying you're a "D," "R," "communist," etc. puts your mind and your positions in a camp to defend. Why not weigh each issue, policy, and scenario standing-alone with consistent common-sense?

If you don't have a weapon, others with weapons with different beliefs can and will eventually silence you permanently. This is what happens in Mexico to reporters and civil society activists. They don't carry guns and so they make themselves easy targets to eliminate.

failwhaleshark··on The Books We Can Use to Rebuild Civilization
Nothing needs to be destroyed or reinvented, only returned to common-sense and integrity. There are essentially no new ideas.

- Everyman's Library Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is worth having.

- A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies / Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias is another title important to understand what happened in the Americas as well as slaves taken from Africa.

- Other titles by: Aristotle, Sartre, Kant, Plato, Rousseau, Benjamin Franklin, Marx, Chalmers Johnson, Kaczynski (accurate and precise in analysis, dead wrong in prescription), Chomsky, Thomas Paine, Zinn, Stiglitz, Richard Wolff.

Like a scientist if they were to invent compact fusion power in their garage but were so bad at marketing and communicating it that they couldn't sell even one, books alone are static print on dead trees that cannot accomplish actions. This is especially true if their messages fall on deaf, ignorant, or greedy/selfish ears.

failwhaleshark··on USC professor’s DIY online teaching hack to engage students goes viral (2020)
There's too many office people who have no interest / refuse to learn any new skills. Many can't cook to save their lives. I doubt 0.1% of them can solder, 0.03% could troubleshoot something electrical, and I'm doubtful of their ability to handle and finish drywall.

It's very sad when people think everything else is beyond their reach or they don't even look to see what could be there.

>Also, I feel like this is super indicative of the gate-keeping mentality a lot of IT and tech

That lumps people together. I'm in IT/tech but don't value intricate, difficult, extreme novelty over everything else. That would be absurd.

Remember Stanfords $1 paper microscope for looking at blood samples? Now that was badass.

The cleverness is in the saving of $7940 to solve a problem. Dumpster-diving for parts and materials, or even freeganning Whole Foods are all perfectly valid too.

I remember a guy used his seat aisle's window on StartupBus as a whiteboard with dry-erase markers, but I guess he should've brought an LED light strip to make it pop more. The trick is installing it. ;-)

failwhaleshark··on Policies that make the poor less poor
Then do something and stop talking about "more discussions." Tax the crap out of empty investment housing. Give people homes.

I lived in vehicles for 9 years, so don't get self-righteous or white-knighting. It is cruel to criminalize poverty, and it is cruel to "benignly" neglect homeless people with a lack of services, treating them like criminals in the assistance programs, offer a troublesome patchwork of charity resources rather than integrated delivery, and give only a pittance of assistance instead of doing what is cost-effective and humane to get people into better situations holistically and comprehensively. Mental healthcare including psychiatry, social skills training, and therapy, substance treatment, nutrition, and good medical care are just some of the essential aspects of raising people up.

The US typically has an awful and abhorrent track-record when it comes to delivering necessary social services. For example, in Santa Clara County, an average homeless man without Social Security can expect to receive ~$149 in almost cash and ~$205 in SNAP (previously known as a "food stamps"). The ABAWD requirement comes-and-goes periodically with mandating work in order to receive benefits. (How can a homeless person hold a job if they don't have shoes or the resources to clean themselves?)

Healthcare is provided by substandard Medi-Cal (Medic-Aid) which now includes slightly less horrible dental services (Denti-Cal).

Cell phones are provided by the Lifeline service.

failwhaleshark··on Vancouver School Board Is Eliminating Honors Programs
Independent of individual honors' programs, California's Gifted And Talented Education (GATE) program in the 80's and 90's, AFAICT, consisted solely of IQ tests, i.e., timed triangle arrangement tests. I didn't see any point to it other than spending taxpayer money and/or for the education department to tick a box that they had a GAT program.

Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist wingnut, but a country should inventory its smartest students. I believe GAT programs are how it is done in the US. If this were the case, it seems plausible these students are tracked and recruited by intelligence (no pun intended) agencies and strategic opportunities later on if they meet certain criteria. Hypothetically, GAT data would feed such a human assets program.

failwhaleshark··on Vancouver School Board Is Eliminating Honors Programs
Affirmative Action: Anti-Intellectual Edition:

- Eliminate SAT and ACT as admissions criteria

- Lower admission standards to where merit doesn't matter

- Accept as many student "customers" as possible

- Everyone gets an A+ for participation

- Graduate everyone

- Axe honors programs because they're ableist

- Bus the white and Asian gifted kids 3 hours a day to the "magnet" under-performing schools when there's a perfectly good school 0.1 mi / 0.2 km away from them (ask me how I know)

- Disband Gifted And Talented programs, because you know, ableism again

- Stop offering The College Board - Advanced Placement (AP) exams because it gives smart, dedicated students an "unfair advantage"

failwhaleshark··on Policies that make the poor less poor
I live in ATX near I-35. Homelessness is being brutally re-criminalized here. It's all about sweeping poor people under the rug so tourists can get drunk without being offended that the society is so unjust, uncaring, and unequal.
failwhaleshark··on Policies that make the poor less poor
Hate and demonization of homeless people is entirely inappropriate. I suggest you look at yourself before judging people you don't know.
failwhaleshark··on The first Black-owned social job network built on blockchain launches Juneteenth
The danger of unmooring treatment from merit is that it inculcates an entitlement, low-confidence, fragile superiority mentality instead of a performance, accomplishment one. Plus, no one with self-respect would want to be advanced over more qualified people solely because of their attributes. And, it doesn't help advance equity for all and collectively-punishes those who don't happen to be micro-minority enough. Affirmative action, diversity, and other such biases policies are the factual definition of -ist/-isms with a pendulum the other way by exhaustive exclusion of all but one or two groups.

Want a just society? Stick to merit, shun hate, and minimize bias.

I guess it's best to always leave the door open, curtains/blinds open, and not be secluded with any employee you don't trust implicitly since a disgruntled worker of any gender can cook-up a "they touched me in my special place" story.

Exercise is usually great. Is there another type other than physical I don't know about?

> No sun screen in your face / around the eyes

And get wrinkles and skin cancer. Excellent!

> Throw away your sunglasses.

And get cataracts. Good one!

My apologies but these recommendations come across like the side of Dr. Bronner's soap bottle. Entertaining but I'm not sure how useful or scientific they are.
