fahadkhan··on When did software go off the rails?
There is a cost to the company for non performant front end code though. If the front end preforms poorly users are less likely to use it.
fahadkhan··on Ask HN: Which companies give programmers offices?
This is of course location sensitive. In London, UK, I have not heard of personal or shared offices anywhere but very small companies.
fahadkhan··on Ask HN: Which companies give programmers offices?
I agree. But if you consider having a personal office a smart thing, this isn't going to easy or even possible.
fahadkhan··on Why some of the best developers keep quitting
I fend generally "unglamorous but important tasks" are too difficult for most juniors and requires massive amounts of handholding.

Also I find it better to deploy juniors to glamorous tasks wherever possible. They benefit from the glamour to become self sufficient non-juniors.

fahadkhan··on Developers who use spaces make more money than those who use tabs
Oh no! Someone started the Tabs vs Spaces holy war on HN again.
fahadkhan··on The Future of Go Summit – Ke Jie vs. AlphaGo
"The real match would be Tencent vs Deepmind."

I really like this, as it puts into to context that there is nothing artificial about the intelligence, it is the achievement teams of people.

fahadkhan··on Guaranteed Minimum What?
I believe education is currently undergoing a similar transition that music and film and been through. At the end of Education will be cheaper. It already is a lot cheaper in some cases.

Health care is tougher, due to stricter regulations (rightly so) and reluctance from doctors but I think the transformation there is about to begin. Look at what is happening with (open source) prosthetics.

Prime reason for rent and mortgage that I can see is wealth generation and in a society where wealth is less important perhaps these will also decrease. You can see more and more interest in open source, not just in software but also other fields, is this a shift away from wealth accumulation?

From another angle, people are beginning build homes with recycled plastic and by 3D printing this hopefully will reduce build cost. And hopefully that will filter down to the end consumer.

fahadkhan··on Guaranteed Minimum What?
The current population is growing. Evidently there is enough resources to population at this level (food, water, space, air, energy, etc). If production of resources is automated why can't resources distributed to sustain current population?
fahadkhan··on Post-Brexit Britain and the UK’s Shrinking Tech Talent Pool
The other element of this is that highly skilled EU worker would demand higher salaries than those from non-EU countries. How this will affect British workers is again hard to call.
fahadkhan··on Post-Brexit Britain and the UK’s Shrinking Tech Talent Pool
"the more we can demand."

As long as there is work to do!

fahadkhan··on Post-Brexit Britain and the UK’s Shrinking Tech Talent Pool
It will be interesting to see how this pans out for developers that stay in the UK, like myself. It's too hard a call it either way. In the current anti-immigration climate I can't see the UK tech industry competing as well as it has been.
fahadkhan··on Crash course to Amiga assembly programming
I can't see them being anything but proud of that legacy! In fairness they tried with IA-64, but the world didn't want it. And perhaps both HP & Intel were half hearted about it.
fahadkhan··on Get started making music
"Right now, musical notation strives for a single notation that tries to encompass the entire work—and to also serve as a canonical, lossless transcription of the work, from which it can be recovered."

I don't believe this to be true. (Modern) Guitar Music is most often written in tab often without accompanying staff notation. Also staff notation is not loseless, musicians will interpret the music differently. For example, with violin, whilst some instruction is given on bowing it is almost never complete and the musicians will find different ways to fit the bowing to the rhythm, this can make a huge different to overall tone as (most simply) the up bow sounds distinctly different to the down bow.

fahadkhan··on Facebook staff reject female engineers’ code more often, former employee claims
that's not quite the cobra effect. For that the number of female developers would need to have been reduced and not code quality.
fahadkhan··on The 10x developer is not a myth (2013)
You can't be expected to exact as the square root of 10 is irrational. Perhaps that says something about the 10x developers.
fahadkhan··on The 10x developer is not a myth (2013)
Wow, it's even better 10.24x developers exist!

fahadkhan··on Dr John Goodenough’s story suggests some people become more creative with age
There are many more people who are considered obsessed with something and are not considered geniuses than there are people who are considered geniuses.

An easy example is music. The world is full of professional and amateur musicians, many of who are considered obsessed and yet people considered geniuses rare, perhaps only a handful every century.

fahadkhan··on How to answer the “What’s your current salary?” job interview question
Interesting, my view has been almost the opposite. It's difficult to get your first developer role. But after a year of that and salaries increase quite rapidly. likewise with contracting / freelancing.

Of course my view of cheap and expensive may be different from yours.

fahadkhan··on How to answer the “What’s your current salary?” job interview question
wow! Not sure how I feel about that. I find it strange that anyone can find out the price paid for any house in Britain. I often see people often 'valuing' other people with this information. I can't imagine what it would be like if people could find salaries directly.
fahadkhan··on How to answer the “What’s your current salary?” job interview question
Do you need any one job that badly? Appreciate I am in a fortunate position but I was under the impression that there is more demand for developers than there is supply.
