fab1an··on Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine approved for use in UK
I am curious about a thing I read about Sweden, and would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this as a Swede: is it true that nursing home inhabitants per default (and regardless of a pandemic) do not get ICU level care anyway?

In Germany, you typically get 100% care unless you have specified that you do not want it (or your relatives make this difficult call). So the triage threat has been described by doctors as something along the lines of "we would effectively no longer try to treat a 90 year old nursing home patient with severe dementia in our ICU"

fab1an··on In study, acetaminophen makes risky moves seem less dangerous
This is very interesting - I had recently read about the empathy lowering effect of Paracetamol and the cynic in me could not help but wonder if any corporate folks may have (ab)used it to become more sociopathic (which is a requirement for success in many of the more dysfunctional corporate contexts)
fab1an··on The impact of Apple Silicon Macs on Broadway
It's a little weird, especially since the musicians aren't visible to the audience - why would you play live?
fab1an··on Maps.me is gone, and we must bring it back
I did a hike a few years ago with nothing but a drawn map and a compass - it's a very enjoyable experience indeed.
fab1an··on Maps.me is gone, and we must bring it back
Thank you for the recommendation, looks amazing, instantly bought.
fab1an··on Maps.me is gone, and we must bring it back
Too bad, maps.me was by far the best maps application for non city use, and ideal for hiking. Commendable initiative to bring it back in its original version!

A few examples of why it was so great:

Simple, non social bookmarks. As in: place a bookmark so you don't get lost while hiking, or when you find a nice spot you want to come back to later. Yep, a utility feature that doesn't somehow map to some stoopid business OKR in advertising. I am sure this is possible with Google maps or Apple maps somehow, but only after you've created an account, logged in, and made sure you have the equivalent of a South Korean inner city internet connection.

Also, easily downloadable maps that just stay on your phone. I am hiking, I don't have internet and need the map on my phone. I know Google Maps allows you to do that but it is tedious unlike maps.me, which is instant.

fab1an··on Ask HN: Earning 100k EUR in Berlin?
Yes, sure. Then again I'd prefer my kids to grow up in a society where almost everyone has similar access to daycare, schools and uni, as opposed an increasingly stratified one that ultimately isn't safe outside of your gated community..
fab1an··on Ask HN: Earning 100k EUR in Berlin?
Anyone saying that this isn't possible in Berlin is stuck in 2010. Today there are most certainly well funded startups paying 100k for top senior engineers and/or managers, but that is in the top 10% of salaries in this field.

Beyond startups, there are 1. some smaller, but crazy profitable software companies (think dozens of M in annual revenue with less than 50 staff and a handful of owners) that will also pay this type of salary and 2. some larger companies (think Zalando).

Compared to US and esp Bay Area salaries (which ofc can be multiples of that) one needs to bear in mind massively cheaper costs of living (while often providing higher standards) - day care for kids for example is 100% free (as in tax funded) in Berlin.

That being said, the pandemic is certainly taking its toll as many companies have gone into a hiring freeze.

At the same time, the decline of SF and the remote work trend will likely mean an increase in intl salaries (due to Big Tech hiring remotely) and a decrease in SF salaries.

fab1an··on Pfizer Covid vaccine approved for use next week in UK
I get your point, but maybe Mainz would be more well known if we called it the Mainz vaccine? ;)

Hell, we let Trump present the Mainz vaccine as if it was his personal achievement.

Germany has got to do better here.

fab1an··on Pfizer Covid vaccine approved for use next week in UK
This should really be called the BioNTech or even "Mainz" vaccine (similar to the "Oxford" one), but Germany is terrible at this kind of marketing
fab1an··on Show HN: Train your leadership skills in 2 min a day [iOS app]
The workplace RPG character sheet model is pretty promising I think, great to see more innovation in this space (akin to https://boingboing.net/2004/03/16/ninjas-and-pirates-d.html)
fab1an··on CAPTCHAs don’t prove you’re human – they prove you’re American (2017)
hCaptcha team here - thanks for the feedback, we'll look into this!
fab1an··on hCaptcha now runs on fifteen percent of the internet
Not sure what you mean by click type?
fab1an··on hCaptcha now runs on fifteen percent of the internet
Unlike Google, which is making hundreds of billions with ads, we have zero reasons to track users - customers pay us to stop bots, and that's the product we provide.
fab1an··on hCaptcha now runs on fifteen percent of the internet
With our hCaptcha Enterprise product (https://www.botstop.com), showing a CAPTCHA actually only happens in rare cases (relatively speaking..) - vast majority of bots are caught and stopped in the background (using ML), and most users will never see one.
fab1an··on hCaptcha now runs on fifteen percent of the internet
Great catch. If you'd like, you can actually submit a better translation via a pr here: https://github.com/hCaptcha/hcaptcha-i18n
fab1an··on hCaptcha now runs on fifteen percent of the internet
Google reCaptcha likely discriminates against non Chrome users, hCaptcha does not. Also, we support and co-develop https://www.hcaptcha.com/privacy-pass !
fab1an··on hCaptcha now runs on fifteen percent of the internet
Google uses reCAPTCHA labels exclusively for themselves, and is extracting hundreds of free person years of labor from internet users every single day via this. hCaptcha lets anyone access this type of service, provided they follow certain ethical AI guidelines
fab1an··on hCaptcha now runs on fifteen percent of the internet
You only put hCaptcha / BotStop where you actually need the protection, and it certainly doesn't follow your users around unnecessarily
fab1an··on hCaptcha now runs on fifteen percent of the internet
I think parent means hCaptcha enterprise in passive mode, where hCaptcha is detecting bots in the background using ML: botstop.com
fab1an··on hCaptcha now runs on fifteen percent of the internet
OP here, and full disclosure I work with the hCaptcha team. Yep, Cloudflare is a big part of this, but you'll find our enterprise offering (BotStop.com) running on many many other large sites and apps. If you've used the internet in 2020, you almost certainly interacted with our products :)
fab1an··on hCaptcha now runs on fifteen percent of the internet
hCaptcha runs anywhere, even works on Telegram groups: https://github.com/hCaptcha/telegram-bot
fab1an··on hCaptcha now runs on fifteen percent of the internet
Unlike Google, hCaptcha isn't running an ad network "on the side" of their bot management business :) joking aside, hCaptcha is an extremely privacy-conscious operation, Google is not.
fab1an··on How Much VCs Make
It's interesting (in a "responsible conspiracy theorizing" kind of way) to note that there has been very little innovation in this space (with the exception of the very recent emergence of 'rolling funds'.) The VC model that funded Apple in the 80s is afaik pretty much the same to what Lemkin describes in the post for today.
fab1an··on ReCAPTCHA and the Anonymous Experience
Consider hCaptcha - it's basically a superset of reCAPTCHA's functionality, but much more privacy-friendly and more affordable at scale. Also, it lets anyone label their data on it, not just Google. Full disclosure, I work with their excellent team.
fab1an··on Coinbase Card
I assume this is marketing play to get more people into crypto by at least somehow creating the appearance of it being an actual currency already. I doubt many people will actually use it, but it may convince more crypto-curious folks to actually join the "movement"
fab1an··on Reading too much political news is bad for your well-being
I've been trying to cut news and social media out of my daily habits as much as possible, and am attempting to replace it with reading books whenever possible. It sure isn't easy, but I feel significantly more productive, healthier, happier and overall more human on days where this works particularly well.

What helps is to not have the phone in your bedroom and charge iit elsewhere instead - replace it with a Kindle or a book and rread that instead for a few minutes upon waking up.

fab1an··on 'Long Covid': Why are some people not recovering?
Good to see some data on how common/uncommon this may be: it seems that 2% of confirmed patients suffer from some form of "Long Covid", which definitely isn't great news, but certainly better than what some overeager media have irresponsibly reported (the Rome study comes to mind, where hospitalized patients where somehow taken to be representative of the entire pool of infected people).

One does wonder about the 'nocebo' factor, too - if you've been told to watch out for lingering symptoms are an infection that certainly affects the way in which you are observing your own body, especially so if you're even minimally hypochondriac. There is an understandable media narrative to portray mostly severe cases (again, understandable from some sort of public health perspective) but that also adds to psychological add-on effects one might face with this disease.

I'm in no way part of the just-the-flu crew, but feel that the OMG-COVID crew hasn't necessarily thought the above aspects through either.

fab1an··on Ask HN: Should I move to London and open an business (as a founder from EU)?
Really depends on what you want to do. For most things, I'd say forget London. Brexit means Brexit.

Do consider Berlin. Yes, it's more bureaucratic, but depending on what you'll do you'll have access to a much larger market. Operating a business is more expensive than London, but cost of living is much cheaper and QoL arguably better.

However, you should probably be willing to learn some German.
