f1refly··on Dr. Mengele, USA Style: Lessons from Human Rights Abuses in America [pdf] (2022)
How is that relevant in any way?
f1refly··on Gov. Inslee signs bill to remove death penalty from Washington state law
The murder has been staged. Organized crime found a doppelganger, made him wear the victims clothes and kill the other guy on cctv. They contacted the victim and told him to either confess or they will kill his children and parents.
f1refly··on Ask HN: What is a good gift for a mechanically oriented 8 year old
Am alternative to lego technics: Fischertechnik (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fischertechnik). Depending on where you are it might not be available, but in my opinion its a far better system for kids who like to tinker with machines.
f1refly··on GNU+Linux laptops with Libreboot preinstalled, based on coreboot
> Weirdly enough you can mod it to charge with a USB-C PD cable instead of the thinkpad one.

Not weird at all, you just need a 20V decoy board, those can be bought for about a dollar a piece on ali. They obviously won't transfer data. It just so happens that the barrel charger module is in a nice separated large block of plastic that can be hollowed out to fit the usb c socket inside.

f1refly··on Framework’s computers aren’t perfect, but they are exciting
The x220 it replaced had a smaller battery and two ddr3 sticks instead of a single ddr4. It still lasted longer than the framework laptop when comparing suspend times, even with deep sleep enabled.
f1refly··on Framework’s computers aren’t perfect, but they are exciting
I'm using my Framework for about a year now, and it's a worthy replacement for the lenovo x220 I had before. The lenovo had some broken plastic clips from the many times I disassembled it, imagine my excitement when framework announced they would use magnets instead! The only complaint I have is the battery drain in suspend, but it seems like this is an issue with the 11th generation Intel processor my mainboard bears. Not a great excuse by any means, but tolerable when weighted against the rest of the package. Now that they finally announced matte displays, the only things I'm missing is a better shell than the cheap looking aluminium alloy type they currently use and a trackpoint option.
f1refly··on Meta wants EU users to apply for permission to opt out of data collection
"Simply impossible" is relative once you don't use whatsapp anymore. People will just adjust to send you sms or call you instead for important information.

f1refly··on The Fediverse Is Already Dead
This whole posts lacks arguments and reads like a lot of text to say "This is not what I wanted and I'm sure all the people enjoying it hate it without knowing yet". She complains about how a solution to a problem is bad, but the next paragraph is about how that solution is not applied radical enough. I don't think she knows exactly what makes her so angry about the world herself.
f1refly··on Disqualified from a National Web Design Competition for Using GitHub

f1refly··on Gentoo Linux 2022 Retrospective
Any suggestions how to get started building a cross rootfs with gentoo? My experience is limited to half a year of gentoo on my laptop in highschool, but I hate yocto with passion and would love to move to gentoo.
f1refly··on The Samsung Galaxy S23’s bloated Android build somehow uses 60GB of storage
Actual android takes about 800MiB, judging from the lineagos flashable zip files.
f1refly··on Show HN: I trained an AI model on 120M+ songs from iTunes
> But to me this is a feature, not a bug. I could see this or something like it opening my eyes to music I would never possibly have found on my own.

What makes it different from a big "play me a random song" button then?

f1refly··on Twitter TOS Change
> Leaving aside why someone is still using RSS in 2023

> Reddit does it, Instagram does it

One website known for its hilariously broken performance and a Facebook subsidiary. Nothing anyone should look up to.

f1refly··on How to own an airline in 3 easy steps and grab the TSA nofly list along the way
The jurisdiction is quite questionable. If someone in north Korea would decide I'm guilty of breaking some bizarre law, I couldn't care less. Why would a Swiss citizen care about what the united states think is a crime?
f1refly··on Ask HN: Why is on-device search terrible?
Try `find / -iname "foo" 2>/dev/null`, works every time. Also can take quite some time.
f1refly··on Jabber.org has migrated to Prosody IM

TDD helps a lot against fragility imo. The main issue is explaining why your project takes so much longer as your tests force you to work out every edge case.
f1refly··on Omg.lol – A lovable web page and email address
I believe the issue for many people is not the "non-corporate / non-billionaire-control" part, and more the "twitter" part. It may sound weird to people who use twitter, but much of the world don't have the slightest interest in the concept.
f1refly··on React Native is not the future
I think at least the android app is very much native
f1refly··on Ask HN: Why is the wait for the new iPhone or gadget not as rousing as before?
The main difference would be that the vanilla android ui is now less responsive, the main camera is a bump in the phones back, the front camera is a hole in your screen and that the 2022 phone doesn't have a standard 3.5mm jack. The 2022 phone loses bigtime honestly.

f1refly··on All About USB-C: Illegal Adapters
I've had two broken USB-C connected phones in the past, the Oneplus 3 and Oneplus 5. Both had their C ports on a separate flex cable, with the port itself screwed onto the aluminium back of the phone on both sides. I was pleasantly suprised by this, it is a really solid construction. I've never had a broken USB-C socket though, it's been the battery for both phones. I think the C port is the best mobile connector on the market ever from a physical point of view.
f1refly··on All About USB-C: Illegal Adapters
Lightning connectors only have eight pins, the other side of the connector has the gold plating just for the looks of it. The socket is monitoring both sides with flipped pin order, one side is always unused. It's a ridiculously wasteful design. I'm glad other companies can't use it.
f1refly··on I'm done with Google
The key point for me with valve is their ongoing efforts to make software they license to me easier for me to use. This is completely opposed to the rest of the media industry, who are working exclusively to make my experience worse. Thanks to valves efforts I can now easily run many games that would've been windows only a few years ago.
f1refly··on I'm done with Google
A service problem is when the media mafia refuses to sell me files that I can keep. I'd like to open some website and pay 15 bucks for a movie (the same as I'd buy for a recent bluray in a store) where I'm then allowed to just download a .mkv that I can throw on my nas. Major streaming sites refuse to serve me content with resolution higher that 480p (I think?) because my computer obeys me and not them. Sure looks great on the big screen in my living room.
