eyphka··on Scientist treated her own cancer with viruses she grew in the lab
I would encourage reading about Jim Allison (the nobel prize winner in medicine for immunotherapy) and his difficulty having his research acknowledged / getting funding as an immunologist working in cancer research.

Wired magazine did a piece on him detailing how funding for this type of research was largely stonewalled because it ignored status quo ideas on cancer treatment.

My understanding is that traditionally ovt research was nearly impossible to get funding for but has begun to become easier as the status quo research and researchers from the 2000s have been replaced.

“A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.”

eyphka··on OpenAI Is a Bad Business
The question is when the model can make money from advertising.

If the ai is asked to recommend products, does it show an ad or even an argument for paying for some product.

eyphka··on Y Combinator is predicated on startups that require low capitalization
Simple reason for bad 10 years - pg stepped away from day to day 2014
eyphka··on The Architecture Behind a One-Person Tech Startup (2021)
Seconded, (and also started on elastic beanstalk!)

Has kept surprisingly well over time, with some hiccups around platforn version changes.

eyphka··on The curse of the goitre in Switzerland
While the cases were high in switzerland, they were not unique.

Link to an academic article discussing how the USA is now in the dangerzone of iodine deficiency.

eyphka··on Did English ever have a formal version of "you"? (2011)
Interesting, and are those used as the informal you? Or in reference to singular?
eyphka··on Seeing like a bank
I’m having trouble remembering, but that was the predecessor to finastra phenoix right? I’d love to grab you virtual coffee and talk - chris@prelim.com
eyphka··on Seeing like a bank
Out of curiosity, was it metavante?
eyphka··on The ten year anniversary of the Healthcare.gov rescue
This was a fantastic read and looking forward to reading more. Also, I’d love to learn more about the “people who were in the room” so to speak.

Also I hope that some academic historian has been in touch to catalogue that notebook!

eyphka··on Lodash just declared issue bankruptcy and closed every issue and open PR
There are a couple of weird things in my experience, like the old implementation of zip, but by and large it was mostly either restrictions of js itself or browser implementations of js.

Lodash has and still is a good standard / reference for these simple operations imo.

eyphka··on When did Postgres become cool?
Running Postgres in production since 2017. Some trivia required, but nothing like priest knowledge needed for MySQL.

I love not having to be trivia king.

eyphka··on Why are there no startups in the real estate construction sector?
Plangrid (yc) comes to mind, which was acquired for 875 million by auto desk.
eyphka··on US vendor accused of violating GDPR by reputation-scoring EU citizens
Imo it does as it complicates the narrative. It is now an EU company hiding its practices via an offshored company.
eyphka··on US vendor accused of violating GDPR by reputation-scoring EU citizens
Got it, but the owning parent company was Belgian, isn’t it?
eyphka··on US vendor accused of violating GDPR by reputation-scoring EU citizens
I’m not sure why it says US when the company owning is Belgian I believe.
eyphka··on France’s Mistral AI raises a $113M seed round to take on OpenAI
If something is already built, why do they need your hundred million?
eyphka··on US Rural Hospital Closures Since 2005
This is beyond the scope of my knowledge, but what I can say is that the original issue in the 90s arose from a fear of too many doctors coupled with too much spending on said doctors which resulted in multiple regulatory changes to prevent this outcome.
eyphka··on US Rural Hospital Closures Since 2005
The reason for the scarcity of talent/ doctors is due to a regulation change in 1983/1996 that wasn't adjusted until last year that was restricting the number of residency spots for doctors in the US.

See a vox piece from 2022 on this topic: https://www.vox.com/22989930/residency-match-day-physician-d...

*Also note this has been slightly fixed with an increase of residency spots, but still puts the US in position to have fewer doctors per person than almost all other developed countries.

** Also see this piece published in medical economics for further reading on the subject of physician shortage: https://www.medicaleconomics.com/view/match-day-2023-a-remin...

eyphka··on 10 years after Snowden's first leak, what have we learned?
I believe the criticism usually stems from the following tweet and the silence after the invasion of Ukraine.

https://twitter.com/Snowden/status/1493646431743356931

eyphka··on 10 years after Snowden's first leak, what have we learned?
Snowdens recent conversations around Russia and Russia's invasion of Ukraine have tinted or confirmed biases against Snowden as a traitor and stooge of the Russian government.

eyphka··on Automatic emergency braking should become mandatory, feds say
The engine failures are mostly for combustion, and have resulted in multiple deaths, including nearly my own.
eyphka··on Automatic emergency braking should become mandatory, feds say
Hyundai has been having engine failures, would not recommend as experienced spontaneous engine failure on a less than year old car. Check consumer reports or source below.

“In 2020, NHTSA announced civil penalties for the companies—totaling $210 million—for not recalling vehicles in a timely manner. In 2021, a whistleblower who provided NHTSA with information that led to those penalties was awarded $24 million, the agency’s first-ever whistleblower award.”

eyphka··on The Bronze Age has never looked stronger
The parallels are definitely there. Two issues happening are imo primary causes, corporate consolidation and the move towards "Demand-driven Supply Chain".
eyphka··on Teasing strange matter from the ordinary
One thing to note, associate professor is often a tenured position.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_ranks_in_the_United_S...

eyphka··on The age of average
For much of this article, I know nothing.

But on the one area I can speak intelligently about, video games, this article is dead wrong. There has been an explosion of experimentation in terms of anything measurable: genres, art styles, etc. And from a product/ company point of view, this can be seen by the diversity of who is winning. The largest game in the world in terms of revenue AND number of users is Minecraft, which looks zero like the next best selling game.

This makes me think the whole article is wrong.

eyphka··on US Says All SVB Deposits Safe, Creates New Backstop for Banks
No bailout. Investors and executive wiped out. Depositors will be made 100% whole. Fed did its job today and prevented a mass bank run.
eyphka··on Yellen says government will help SVB depositors but rules out bailout
This is simply not true and very easy to verify via

https://banks.data.fdic.gov/bankfind-suite/bankfind

Most banks actually have most of their deposits NOT insured. Most banks are not bofa.

Prelim (YC S17) | Software Engineers, Customer Success, Marketing Manager | REMOTE (US ONLY) | prelim.com

Prelim is a digital originations platform for banks. (We're a Y Combinator backed company! YC S17)

Banks spend billions of dollars on one-size fits all solutions to originate their products. When banks want to do something as simple as change copy, or add a new set of questions, banks are forced to either pay per hour, seek out a new vendor, or build it themselves. Our platform empowers banks to give their customers better experiences, instead of having to post a pdf on their website.
