explorigin··on Ask HN: What is interviewing like now with everyone using AI?
Part of my resume review process is trying to decide if I can trust the person. If their resume seems too AI-generated, I feel less like I can trust that candidate and typically reject the candidate.

Once you get to the interview process, it's very clear if someone thinks they can use AI to help with the interview process. I'm not going to sit here while you type my question into OpenAI and try to BS a meaningful response to my question 30 seconds later.

AI-proof interviewing is easy if you know what you're talking about. Look at the candidates resume and ask them to describe some of their past projects. If they can have a meaningful conversation without delays, you can probably trust their resume. It's easy to spot BS whether AI is behind it or not.

explorigin··on Pornhub Is Now Blocked in Almost All of the U.S. South
> Seeing a boob never killed anyone

This is a straw-man attack. Porn produces a huge dopamine dump. Do some research on how dopamine works in the brain. Regular dopamine dumps can have a huge impact on quality of life leading to depression and building an addiction cycle.

explorigin··on Pornhub Is Now Blocked in Almost All of the U.S. South
This is an important distinction. The legislation requires customers identify themselves...not unlike being carded at a brick-and-mortar store. It's Pornhub that's refusing to take that step.

It feels like honest conversation doesn't happen so much in the public space these days if an issue can be politicized. But what will be very interesting to track would be the rate of change of social vices in the next 15 years.
explorigin··on 3D-printed neighborhood nears completion in Texas
SIP walls are basically this. It's a foam-core panel board with chases built in for electrical.
explorigin··on Llama.cpp guide – Running LLMs locally on any hardware, from scratch
Privacy, available offline, software that lasts as long as the hardware can run it.
explorigin··on Ask HN: Where to put a static page that would last forever
Whether its right or wrong advice depends on GPs audience.
explorigin··on Show HN: Kotlin Money
Timezone conversions don't change by the minute. Currency conversions do.
explorigin··on Kotlin Money
I can't speak for C# but the Python Decimal type handle significant figures correctly.

> The decimal module incorporates a notion of significant places so that 1.30 + 1.20 is 2.50. The trailing zero is kept to indicate significance. This is the customary presentation for monetary applications. For multiplication, the “schoolbook” approach uses all the figures in the multiplicands. For instance, 1.3 * 1.2 gives 1.56 while 1.30 * 1.20 gives 1.5600.

explorigin··on Show HN: Open-source real-time talk-to-AI wearable device for few $
I don't think you're their target audience. I'd love something like this for my kid (who isn't ready for a smartphone).

Other problems are persistence. Have you looked at how hard it is to keep an app running in the background on an iPhone? on a Samsung phone? For an app that needs to be always-on, it's a non-starter unless you're Apple or Google respectively.

explorigin··on Rio: Web apps in pure Python
Streamlit seems to be doing ok.
explorigin··on FDA Authorizes First Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Software
+1 on this. I use them with my android phone, steamdeck, windows computer, TV. They work great!
explorigin··on Small asteroid to hit Earth's atmosphere today
As long as you can see them in time.
explorigin··on Show HN: Omi – Open-source AI wearable for capturing conversations
This! LLMs have a lot of potential to fill the "support person" role for high-functioning autistics.
explorigin··on Ask HN: How are you finding the job market in July 2024?
Same for me. The only recruiter messages I get seem desperate because they don't even match my profile skill-set.
explorigin··on U.S. maternal death rate increasing at an alarming rate
Unless there's some threshold in how obesity relates to risk factors that such a small percentage still crossed.
explorigin··on Ask HN: Is there any software you only made for your own use but nobody else?
I once ripped the corner of my windows install code sticker. I was missing the last 2 characters. I wrote a script in SikuliX to bruteforce the remaining 2 characters. It took about 4 hours to run but in the end, I got the full valid code.

explorigin··on Wild horses reintroduced to Kazakhstan steppes after absence of two centuries
That's weird. I was there 20ish years ago and ran into a group of (what seemed to my untrained eye) wild horses when I was hiking in the Tien-shan mountains.
explorigin··on Sprint, T-Mobile Merger Killed Wireless Price Competition in U.S.
Let's not forget the amazing Palm Pre that was released 18 months too late. If it could have been released on time, it might have done much to save Sprint. But by the time it was released it was merely competitive instead of compelling.
explorigin··on We gotta stop ignoring AI's hallucination problem
I guess there's not much training data out there to introduce ideas about facts that are not in the training data. We have to teach models that unknowns exist.
explorigin··on Ask HN: Which tools are the best for internet safety for kids?
I started out with this idea. Unfortunately whitelisting quickly gets out-of-hand. Try shutting off everything and then start whitelisting addresses to get Minecraft working.

It's better to have DNS policies: NextDNS, Pihole, Adguard, etc.

If you go with a DNS filter, make sure the browser they will have access to does not use DoH (Firefox does conditionally by default now).

explorigin··on Ask HN: Which tools are the best for internet safety for kids?
tl;dr; pihole, qustodio, device & network policies

For my young, innocent children, my goal was to protect from accidental clicks. Ad-blocking DNS (pihole, NextDNS) is very effective for that.

Then they got a little older and had friends showing them gore and horror things (because they had unlimited access). This was not age-appropriate content and resulted in multiple sleepless nights as they tried to process the images. Not wanting to perpetuate the cycle, I installed Qustodio on their Android devices. I'm satisfied with that.

I recently bought a Synology RT6600ax and love it. It gives the ability to assign different devices to different sets of network rules so I can customize my parenting to my children as they go through different developmental phases. Having this is a good complement to qustodio because you can configure it to shut off internet for all devices in one place. It does take a technical user to use it to it's potential though.

explorigin··on Mazda’s rotary engine in the age of the electric car
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5UOqZn43gY It has longevity-issues due to an internal roller bearing on the main shaft.
explorigin··on Software vendors dump open source, go for the cash grab
FTA: There is a threefold reason these companies did this. First, all of them, at one point or another, mistook "open source" as a business model. It wasn't then, it isn't now, and it never will be.

This is a hit piece on Redis.

explorigin··on BeagleY-AI: a 4 TOPS-capable $70 board from Beagleboard
4 TOPS is the same as the Coral Accelerator. Look on YT for how people have used it. Another poster mentioned video object recognition with Frigate.
explorigin··on Ludic: New framework for Python with seamless Htmx support
The idea of nested function calls to build HTML is not new. Back in the hey-day of JS frameworks, this was a common vdom pattern. I kinda miss [MithrilJS](https://mithril.js.org/#dom-elements)
explorigin··on Inside the Massive Alleged AT&T Data Breach
Theory: AT&T has a known relationship with the NSA. Maybe the leak was due to an NSA screw-up. In that case, they're telling a half-truth but wouldn't be allowed to tell the whole truth.
explorigin··on IRS has launched its free tax filing service, Direct File, in 12 states
To give you the opportunity to pay taxes on money you made under the table (or get benefits from non-tracked donations you made charities). There are things they don't know about.
explorigin··on Automakers are sharing consumers' driving behavior with insurance companies
Surely these cars have an "offline-mode". Anyone know how to force it? (I almost said "airplane-mode".)
