exolymph··on GPT-3 Creative Fiction (2020)
Personally yes I think Gwern is the best, but Scott influenced me more earlier on.
exolymph··on We could have deleted any LinkedIn Post
What a missed opportunity, shoulda deleted them all!

exolymph··on Tell HN: Google search partial outage while rolling out new search?
Parallel thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35622873

Intriguingly, while google.com isn't working for me, google.ca is.

exolymph··on Tell HN: Google search partial outage while rolling out new search?
Interestingly, while google.com isn't working for me, google.ca did return results. I wonder what's up!
exolymph··on Spanish climber emerges after 500 days in cave
All of that is pretty fucking impressive? Why do you feel like the appropriate comparison point is lifelong dedicated yogis rather than normals

exolymph··on How the World Is Getting Better
Bankruptcy is substantially better than death so yeah this seems like a win?
exolymph··on Paul Graham on Twitter's anti-Substack measures: “It's a mistake.”
I feel like it'd be out of character / off-brand for Musk to care about the ADL
exolymph··on Ask HN: What helps you focus and get things done?
Deadlines / other people waiting on me.

Changing settings (can be as small as switching from couch to table).

If it's something boring, putting on YouTube at the same time so my whole "attention space" is filled despite the tediousness of the task.

exolymph··on Ask HN: Are you still doing intermittent fasting?
I was up until I got pregnant! (Intermittent fasting pairs extraordinarily poorly with morning sickness. And then once that wears off you're ravenous all the time.)

> weekend comes and it becomes 10X harder, especially if others are eating around me. And then a sunny day comes and you "have" go have some barbecue and beer, an hamburguer at night, etc.

It's okay to take days off! Especially if that makes the diet/lifestyle more sustainable for you overall.

exolymph··on Redditor took out $76,000 loans to trade meme stocks thanks to Wall Street Bets
There are infinite people telling you to do any given dumb thing. Most of us manage alright regardless.

People still fall for Nigerian prince scams, it just isn't novel anymore.

exolymph··on ‘Preparing to die has a lot to do with having had a good life’
Not having kids also produces this dynamic. A childless person is less likely to have strong connections amongst the still-vigorous once they're very old.
exolymph··on Ask HN: How do I keep my elderly father safe on the internet?
Great comment. You're a good son. One small note:

> the most frustrating thing is how many of these people we delete that just keep re-adding themselves. Facebook really should not re-suggest a friend if you delete them.

Try blocking them? That might prevent re-recommendation.

exolymph··on Walking 8k Steps Twice a Week Could Prolong Your Life, Study Finds
Most likely it's a feedback loop that goes both ways. Generally healthy —> activity is easier and more pleasurable —> exercise makes you healthier —> being healthy makes exercise more viscerally rewarding, and so on.
exolymph··on Why Americans Care About Work So Much
Go to church anyway. You don't have to believe to attend services.
exolymph··on Incompetent but Nice
What a heartwarming success story :) Username checks out!
exolymph··on The TikTok ban is a betrayal of the open internet
If it goes through, they'll just use Instagram Stories and Reels instead. Possibly also Snapchat.
exolymph··on After a decade, South Dakota's Amish are moving on
Descriptive =/= prescriptive.
exolymph··on Launch HN: Play.ht (YC W23) – Generate and clone voices from 20 seconds of audio
Who says it has to be someone else's voice?
exolymph··on Ask HN: How are you using GPT to be productive?
Similar to Google Docs but with GPT4 (previously 3 and 3.5) built in.
exolymph··on Ask HN: How are you using GPT to be productive?
I'm a writer (copy, social, all-purpose) at a startup. I've been using GPT4 via Lex.page to generate crappy first drafts which I then improve and expand. It can speed up the process quite a bit, but needs handholding and someone to add in personality.
exolymph··on [dead]
You can fire someone who is pregnant, just not because they're pregnant.

exolymph··on Meta Layoffs
> In person work, though a logistical headache and social annoyance, drives team cohesion.

This is probably true, but the thing is, I don't care. Team cohesion is not worth commuting. So any company that wants people who feel the same as I do to work for them is going to have to bite the bullet on the tradeoff.

exolymph··on Community’s 25yrs without a newborn shows scale of Japan’s population crisis
It's a pure hypothetical because the people who do reproduce under conditions of modernity will become the future population.
exolymph··on Show HN: Quality News – Towards a fairer ranking algorithm for Hacker News

exolymph··on America and China are preparing for a war over Taiwan
Not due to lack of practical capacity but lack of the political will to commit large-scale massacre. (Not saying we should have.)
exolymph··on Banning words won’t make the world more just
The ranking is the point of the initialism. Black and indigenous people were already included in the blanket term "people of color," so why introduce BIPOC if not to highlight those groups specifically?
exolymph··on Why the rate of single men in the US looking for dates has declined
May or may not be true in general, but there's an obvious selection effect on who your pharmacist friend is exposed to.
