ewalk153··on Ruby vs. Python comes down to the for loop
I read it as the opposite of the GP.

You've highlighted the idiomatic differences in the language design and how each lends itself to a different style of thinking. Neat.

ewalk153··on ProctorU is dystopian spyware
I have found that two to three strong points far out weight a list of 5-10 weaker points. This extends to the case when the original two points are included in a longer list.
ewalk153··on Canadian Real Estate Prices Are Overvalued by Up to 91%: Moody’s
Speaking for Montreal here: there is a lot of demand chasing a limited supply.

I’ve seen prices increase by ~30% in my neighborhood over the past 3 years.

ewalk153··on Replacing my Octopress blog with 200 lines of Babashka
This is a lovely, honest sentiment. Thanks for sharing (here and on your blog).
ewalk153··on Scaling Indexing and Search – Algolia New Search Architecture
Does this give independent term weighting per tenant, or is that common across the group?
ewalk153··on Use of GitHub Enterprise
Trust: easily lost and hard won. Looks like a small step on the path to recovery.
ewalk153··on Facebook-owned sites were down
Folks are still chatting here... seems to work as designed...
ewalk153··on How close is nuclear fusion power?
“This project will produce 10x the power output we put into”.

Yes, the Congress shares some of the responsibility for following the science so loosely that point wasn’t challenge. Still folks here are arguing about the moral relativism of deception to maintain funding.

Is there any dispute that the use of Q by scientist is anything but misleading?

ewalk153··on After DeepMind’s cofounder was placed on leave for bullying, Google promoted him
That seems odd for corporate communications at a publicly traded company.
ewalk153··on Booking.com to repay €65M Dutch State aid after €28M in bonuses for 3 US execs
Not sure of the history of the Ms, but it could come from French: 1000 = mille 10e6 = million 10e9 = millard
ewalk153··on Google goes nuclear against Roku by adding YouTube TV to the main YouTube app
No it doesn’t stop working. The app continues to work but will not receive updates until the dispute is resolved.

You can’t buy a new Roku and set up YouTube TV on it until the app comes back to the Roku store.

It still sucks for consumers.

ewalk153··on Speeding up SQL queries by orders of magnitude using UNION
If this is a database for reporting, using a temporary table is probably fine and a union all wouldn’t concern me.

On Mysql, using a union all creates a temp table which can perform catastrophically under database load. I’ve seen a union all query with zero rows in the second half render a database server unresponsive when the database was under high load, causing a service disruption. We ended rewriting the union all query as two database fetches and have not seen a single problem in that area since.

I was shocked by this union all behavior, but it is apparently a well known thing on MySQL.

I can’t speak to Postgres behavior for this kind of query.

ewalk153··on How Shopify Uses WebAssembly Outside of the Browser
Perhaps in the future (on the team that added subscriptions at Shopify)
ewalk153··on Redis official site not working because it cannot connect to a redis
You can see in the stack trace that it’s using the cuba [1] framework.

ewalk153··on Quantum Supremacy Using a Programmable Superconducting Processor
I think that’s where the

> and with far greater fidelity

comes into play.

ewalk153··on Rails 6.0
I would probably write a flask wrapper and expose an api to the Rails app. I’ve seen this done successfully at scale in a large Rails app.
ewalk153··on Paternity Leave Was Crucial After the Birth of My Child
There is room to acknowledge that men and women are biologically differentiate, while also noting the spectrum of needs in each couple. Be it two fathers, two mothers, or a mother that goes back to work before a father.

The invariant need is a child that has a loving home environment and is well fed.

Living in Canada as an American citizen, I deeply appreciate the leave benefits we have here in Canada/Quebec.

ewalk153··on Rails 6: B-Sides and Rarities
Use a Sinatra app and include ActiveRecord. There are a few gotchas like making sure to clear connections at the end of requests.

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/41400202/replacing-activ...

I’d love to see more examples of picking pieces of rails and combining with other libraries.

ewalk153··on Cowboy 2.0 released
I assume that this is the same cowboy server that provides the Heroku routing layer. Does this mean anything for our Heroku apps?
ewalk153··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2017)
Sonder | San Francisco (SF) | ONSITE, https://www.sonder.com/engineering

Full Stack Engineer, iOS Engineer, Android Engineer

Ruby on Rails, Postgres, Heroku, iOS, Android

Sonder is hiring full stack Ruby on Rails, iOS, and Android engineers. We use React.js for some components on the site and happily use "classic" Rails where there is a fit. If you're a native app engineer, you'll work closely with a backend engineer to develop and launch our first Sonder application.

=== What we do ===

Sonder provides short-term rental apartments for business or leisure, designed our expert team, and cleaned by professionals.

You can book your Sonder through us directly, or find us on Airbnb, HomeAway, Booking.com, and Expedia.

When you travel with Sonder, you get an authentic local experience plus the comforts of hotel hospitality. Sonders are located in one-of-a-kind, explorable neighborhoods, and each home is equipped with a Neighborhood Guide full of local wisdom about the best places to eat, drink, shop, and relax in the area. Although Sonders come in all shapes and sizes, inside each one you’ll find the same consistent standard of quality: crisp linens, professional cleaning, high-speed Wi-Fi, and 24/7 concierge service. It’s travel made tranquil.

ewalk153··on Speeding Up Rendering Rails Pages with render_async
It takes the total cost to a server to render a page and multiplies it.

Under low load, it could make it faster for one user.

Under higher load, each initial page request will be more expensive and therefore will result in exhausted resources sooner.

ewalk153··on Speeding Up Rendering Rails Pages with render_async
Those are great steps to follow for yourself and to reach new members of your team :)

I still hold that sparing use is important.

The overhead for steps before your controller action method can often be a significant portion of the overall response time.

ewalk153··on Speeding Up Rendering Rails Pages with render_async
I would use a technique like this sparingly. It looks to be the "web request" equivalent of an n+1 query.

Imagine you have a table of results and each one is taking time to render. You add this for each row, but you only test it locally with a few rows. In production, maybe that table has hundreds of rows.

You've just DOSed your server.

ewalk153··on Apple receives permit in California to test self-driving cars
Exactly! And Montana is a safe place to develop the tech in a lower density/risk environment.
ewalk153··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2016)
Sonder | Montreal, Canada | Full-Time | ONSITE | Full stack engineer (junior and senior)

Sonder is building the operating system for the future of the hospitality industry. Building a software platform that is reliable, scales and stays agile under demanding product needs is a serious technical challenge. ewalk153··on The Mandelbrot set in JavaScript
What does this title mean? Why 51? Looks like a simple Mandelbrot set in Javascript.
ewalk153··on How We Use Asana to Build Products at Flatbook
Flatbook CTO here. This has been a great approach for us. We've iterated a lot to get to the processes discussed in the article. We continue to improve and evolve it as we learn more about how Asana works for engineering + product.
ewalk153··on Airbnb JavaScript Style Guide
There is also a link on the page to browser compat style guide of es5 https://github.com/airbnb/javascript/tree/master/es5
ewalk153··on Ask HN: Should I use K&R to learn C?
I strongly recommend Learn C the Hard Way http://c.learncodethehardway.org/book/

You'll get a modern approach to C programming and it had great exercises.

ewalk153··on I'm using the standard library
This goes back to the argument between monolithic applications vs small single purpose utilities chained with pipes.

With a simple application that simply prints out the article titles, I get a 6.6M binary on my local machine.
