evilswan··on Joel Spolsky - A Unified Theory of Internet Startups
Bravo.
evilswan··on Show HN: I shipped my first product
Cool - I wish you well with it.
evilswan··on Show HN: I shipped my first product
Neat idea. The app runs in the background and tracks when you move to a new location.

You say it uses very little extra battery - and also that it may affect battery life.

Do you have any test data for how it affects the device battery lifespan?

evilswan··on Why Has BlackBerry Been Blamed for the London Riots?
RIM have likely already complied with the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA):

evilswan··on NASA finds DNA components in meteorites, says they originated in space
This could just be the most significant news in all of human history. Mind blowing that there's now evidence that the building blocks of life exist off-Earth.
evilswan··on Black Hats, Grey Hairs
Meh. Weak, and ending by trying to conflate Anon/Lulz with China's wholesale theft of industrial data is flimsy.
evilswan··on Top Gear caught faking another electric car "failure"
This is being reversioned for the US as a Scion IQ

evilswan··on Secure your browsing using a home VPN
For the same use-case, a very quick howto on a disposable EC2 proxy for coffee shop browsing...

evilswan··on Google Plus defines an era of disruption at a moment's notice
I think it was a poorly-developed: "things can change fast on the internet these days".
evilswan··on Why are programmers afraid of not using semicolons in JavaScript?
"...but you have to be aware of some edge cases"

There's the reason.

evilswan··on 10 people who don't matter (2006)
Don't turn to CNN for your technology industry predictions. They're fine reporting facts, but predictions are hard for anyone!
evilswan··on 10 people who don't matter (2006)
That'll do nicely, sir.
evilswan··on 10 people who don't matter (2006)
Tough job making any prediction like this.

They were right about Aurin Sarin and Sony - but for the wrong reasons.

evilswan··on Many New York City Starbucks Locations About To Put An End To Squatters
Bang goes the only reason to ever visit Starbucks.
evilswan··on Fukime - The Mobile Cloud Platform
The name will hold them back.
evilswan··on How I explained MapReduce to my Wife?
This is even better.
evilswan··on Free icons for any object in the world
The site is REALLY slow right now.

Have you tried viewing the html - there's some neat ASCII art at the top.

evilswan··on When patents attack Android
If the "innovations" in Android were already covered by prior patents; they weren't innovations at all, were they?

Not necessarily my point of view, but isn't that how patents should work? Protecting prior art.

evilswan··on Wireless data from an LED lightbulb
This is really, really clever.
evilswan··on Launching your iPhone & iPad App With Amazon Web Services
Designed to be sluggish?
evilswan··on Launching your iPhone & iPad App With Amazon Web Services
Nice - interesting that EC2 instances vary so wildly in their performance. Will Amazon ever attempt to spot and 'repair' sluggish instances?
evilswan··on [dead]
Question: each 'server' is made up of cheap commodity hardware - but is the storage side of things handled elsewhere? YouTube alone takes 2 days worth of new video every minute - and stores multiple bitrate versions and the source video. That alone, for example, would cause problem for 900,000 commodity-sized hard disks...
evilswan··on Why Users Fill Out Forms Faster with Unified Text Fields
Yes true, but the reason isn't tabbing.
evilswan··on Show HN: Would you use this Twitter iPad App?
So.. it plots tweets on a map.

I live in a sparsely-populated area, so there'd never be the density of my Twitter friends to make it work for me.

evilswan··on Why Users Fill Out Forms Faster with Unified Text Fields
+1

Article says: "This is because users don’t have to tab as much."

Strongly disagree - 'average', non-technical users simply don't tab between fields. They mouse and click, mouse and click, etc.

I can't remember ever seeing a user in a field test (I do UI testing) use tab to traverse a form.

evilswan··on Idea dump | willgrant.org
Wouldn't the wiki-community-spirit help prevent this kind of thing? Guess not, it'd be one person vs another.
evilswan··on Idea dump | willgrant.org
Very nice - though some of the content integration mentioned would be a nice option.
evilswan··on Idea dump | willgrant.org
Are identical plates duplicated across states - if so, then yep, a state too! (us-ca, us-ny, etc would work)
