evadne··on How the Apple Store Lost Its Luster
It is almost impossible to pay in person but the Apple Store app offers ability to scan the barcode on almost any accessory and pay on the spot for it without ever seeing staff. I do not have many issues with this model, in fact it makes visits to the Apple Store for the odd cable quite easy. However, I did find that sometimes specific accessories are simply not presented and one must flag down staff to have one pulled out from storage.

It is the repair/service story that has really deteriorated over time and Apple would bode well to remember that although PC vendors need to play catch-up they will eventually become good enough.

I did find Joint Venture invaluable. Essentially it is a Pay-to-Play scheme which allows you to book same-day appointments and access the Business Team (which gives a slight discount).

Anybody remember the good old days when you could have AppleCare send you a box and a return label?

evadne··on Ask HN: How to deal with a senior colleague who acts like he's boss?
If you are new, you could quit easily… which is indeed an approach to consider.
evadne··on Ask HN: Why Isn't Functional Programming Taking Over?
Wadler had a paper on inhibitors: How enterprises use functional languages, and why they don’t. [1] Hope that this is relevant.

I would encourage thinking about this through the lens of survivor bias. If said pieces of software were so bad, they would have been replaced. So, the business utility delivered by these pieces of software surely exceed the cost of maintenance and upkeep.

I use a Kinesis Advantage and while it is not split, it does have concave key wells which in my opinion is superior to the flat ones on ErgoDox. The middle section is large enough to fit a Magic Trackpad 2 and I have seen people mod their keyboard to place a wireless charger beneath.

evadne··on Ask HN: Going from Developer to Manager. What should I know or learn?
The most important thing in my opinion is to thoroughly understand people, those who report to you, and who you are responsible for: their biases, fears, motivations, habits, and strengths. Upon this basis you can form a cohesive strategy for any task at hand, while at the same time ensuring that the team grows with you during the temporary alliance they have formed with the firm.

At the end of the day, code has to work, and it might be easy to lose sight of this in a myopic and cacophonous world.

evadne··on Ask HN: How do you fix engineering culture?
One way to make it work is to fire everyone and start from scratch. If the application is extremely simple then I trust it could be built by an external team (i.e. outsourced), while you rebuild the team by hiring/vetting one engineer at a time?

On one hand you can not try to fix people. On the other hand, this applies to managers too.

evadne··on Toyota Investing $500M in Uber in Driverless Car Pact
This reminds me of the SEC filing for Toyota which I had to pull up earlier out of curiosity

https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1094517/000119312518...

> As filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on June 25, 2018

> Toyota and Uber Technologies, Inc. have entered into a memorandum of understanding to explore collaboration with respect to ridesharing. As part of the partnership, the companies created new leasing options in which car purchasers can lease vehicles with connected terminals from Toyota Financial Services and cover their payments through earnings generated as Uber drivers

So not their first rodeo, Toyota sells cars after all

Also Toyota Connected is making quite a big splash in Europe at the moment with a London office having been established March 2018 to soak up local talent.

evadne··on Ask HN: Best way to block the sound of human voices in an open office?
Yes, I ordered a moving van and started working from home again… the only way to win is not to play.

Besides audible noise there is visual noise too. And you can’t exactly demand that people leave you alone, not unless if you are jwz [1]

[1] see tent-of-doom

evadne··on Ask HN: What to do about dogma in a company culture?
The reason why work weeks are capped at 40 hours is so you have some time left over for yourself to explore other technologies.

However, if you can’t get the team lead’s or the CTO’s ear, quit.

evadne··on Setting Up a Fast, Comprehensive Search Routine with PostgreSQL
The first solution uses a materialised view. It essentially precomputes what the query can possibly return and uses up additional disk space, plus WAL traffic unless if it is configured unlogged. There has been no mention of how long it takes to rebuild such a materialised view: you will still have full table scans then, but at build time against the primary read instance.

The second solution is better, but please read documentation [1] before replicating it. Also to_tsvector takes an optional regconfig parameter [2] and here is what I get right now

    psql (9.6.2)

evadne··on MacBook Pro throttling not a CPU issue, but rather power throttling of the VRM
Apple statement: Following extensive performance testing under numerous workloads, we've identified that there is a missing digital key in the firmware that impacts the thermal management system and could drive clock speeds down under heavy thermal loads on the new MacBook Pro.

evadne··on Google warns Android might not remain free because of EU decision
This is preposterous. Android is more or less AOSP + Google Play services, and the latter are not free for manufacturers to use. There is a license fee. In addition devices need to pass a compatibility test suite (CTS) for them to be eligible for Google Play services. Similar requirements for using Google Pay.

In my personal opinion Android is abused by Chinese OEMs who want the cheapest free thing they can put together. They buy SoC solutions from Mediatek, Allwinner, etc. and the end user never get OS updates or security patches anyhow. The OEMs need to be forced to support what they have shipped.

evadne··on Ask HN: Going to lead a struggling dev team in a different culture, now what?
Cancel the gig.

You can not fix prior mismanagement with technical means and definitely not by bringing in an outsider who probably also does not speak the local language.

In addition you will be limited in who you can hire locally if this is the first time you are moving to a particular country. You will not have connections that are necessary for identifying and retaining high quality staff, should it be found that there has been some sort of acrimonious interactions between the CEO and his/her local team which has impacted morale, which essentially requires you to replace the entire team in order to fix.

So in your situation, you might be forced to try to fix the local team which is a coin-tosser (50/50 chance of this working out), and entirely not acceptable if an artificial deadline has been established.

Cancel the gig. Save the money you would otherwise have spent, and go on a vacation in the same country if you must.

Now, if you’re mad and still want to proceed, you might do well reading https://www.marshallcavendish.com/marshallcavendish/genref/T...

evadne··on Show HN: Hasura – Fast, instant GraphQL APIs on Postgres
I suppose this can be done with row-based security if you are willing to mirror/maintain this in Postgres and/or fork the query engine to issue them under the right roles. There was a talk at PG Day UK 2018 about this but there are no performance benchmarking results available AFAIK.

As to triggers, you can totally do this with event sourcing in triggers, so when something is modified you write a row to the audit table, and you use another process to read from it and do the right thing, etc.
