eva1984··on China won't be luring foreign tech talent any time soon
True.

China, or PRC, has issued fewer than 2000 green cards to foreigners every since its foundation, and most of them are issued to people who have Chinese ancestry.

Race. Chinese people are pretty...racist to TBH. But if you are White, it is probably going to benefit you. Good luck if you are people of colors. People hate PC here, but you will hate China for zero PC as well. A part that I really don't like about China, is a lot of people seem to judge others like it is their own damn rights, unacceptable.

Religion. Not really a lot people care, not even the government does, if you just practice yourself. But you are openly advocating about that, people will frown upon you, and will keep you distance.

eva1984··on China won't be luring foreign tech talent any time soon
To say Ng is THE top guy while ignoring Hinton/LeCun is pretty hilarious. Ng still works in US though.
eva1984··on China won't be luring foreign tech talent any time soon
This article is just typical Western nonsensical way of looking at China that let ideology fool the you and your audience.

If you look at China in a realistic way, its pro/cons are very obvious:

Pro:

1. Chinese market is huge

Cons:

1. This market is very competitive. Local giants are not far from their US counterparts, and they learn(copy) quickly.

2. Pays are high comparing to other jobs in China, but not living up to US level(but on par with Europe and Japan).

3. Long hours and no play.

4. Air pollution.

5. Language barrier for Westerners. You cannot go too far if you don't understand Chinese.

6. Foreigners, even if they want to, have nearly zero chance to be a permanent resident. (Extremely anti-immigrant policy, but the reason is actually consistent. CCP think China is too crowded, so they don't need extra people, they don't even let its own citizens to have more than 2 kids! :P)

How hard is that to figure this out? However, this article is just making everything looks like it is about their cherished liberal ideology. No, if China has money to dig, people will go. But it is not for foreigners, and probably not worthy it.

eva1984··on Ok, let me explain: it’s going to be Angular 4.0
Next next is Angular 8? Neat
eva1984··on Google has reportedly stopped developing its own self-driving car
Not that to me. They might just realize a Google branded car is not going to sell well as a BWM.
eva1984··on Why I still won’t review for or publish with Elsevier
Thanks for clarifying. I guess ML community is different though, even conference cannot keep up the pace of development, journal would be way too slow. But that might not be case for other domains.
eva1984··on Why I still won’t review for or publish with Elsevier
What value does Elsevier provide comparing to something like arxiv.org? Just curious.
eva1984··on This AI Boom Will Also Bust
>> Good CS expert says: Most firms that think they want advanced AI/ML really just need linear regression on cleaned-up data

Not nearly true. The simple counter-argument is that prior to DL, we don't have good approach to really 'clean' data like images.

The author states this fact as if cleaning data is a piece of cake. No, it is surely not. In fact, part of the DL's magic trick is the ability to automatically learn to generalize useful features from data. From another perspective, the whole DL frontend, prior the very last layer, can be viewed as a data cleaning pipeline, which is learnt during the training process, optimized to pick the useful signals.

The author clearly isn't an expert on the matters he trying to put claims on. Yet his statement comes with such big confidence or ignorance. This shows why this revolution will be a truly impactful one, for even some of the claimed intellectuals cannot understand its importance and divergence of its predecessors. They will be caught off-guard then left behind. It would be very enjoyable to watch what their reaction would be once it happens.

eva1984··on Who Lives with Their Parents?
Real estate is much more expensive than last few decades and birthrate is lower than ever, this is hardly a surprise.
eva1984··on AWS Step Functions – Build Distributed Applications Using Visual Workflows
Not useful. Those graphical programming interface all end up miserably. Don't understand why people still trying to sell it.
eva1984··on AWS Batch – Fully Managed Batch Processing
What is the selling point of this? Poor man's Map(no reduce)??
eva1984··on Artificial Intelligence Generates Christmas Song from Holiday Image
This is not even a proper song.

This is an open question
eva1984··on Facebook has cut off Prisma’s Live Video access
Are people serious about style transferring while live-streaming? I mean it is cool and fun, but isn't it also a distraction once people get used to it?
eva1984··on Silicon Valley Has an Empathy Vacuum
This might be the best way...to be honest.
eva1984··on Adapting to American culture as a Chinese student
I think you implicitly assume adaptation meaning losing someone's identity with his/her own culture.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive, IMO. Quite on the contrary, I think in order to successfully adapt, you have to know where you stand in the first place. What fits you, what does not. It is an ever-going process, long and sometimes painful. But in the end, it will force you to better understand your own background, its virtue and weakness alike, and what difference has America bringing to it.

eva1984··on Of course Zuckerberg wants to bow to Chinese censorship

Please do tell me where I can get this deal :)

eva1984··on Facebook Said to Create Censorship Tool to Get Back into China
Laugh aloud, so long ideological America, welcome to the era of pragmatism!
eva1984··on MXNet – Deep Learning Framework of Choice at AWS
Exactly. Among those DL frameworks, I think what TensorFlow gets right the most is the tooling support. The metric collection/visualization/checkpointing is plug-and-play in TensorFlow, others not too much. For example, summary a.k.a metric collection is just a subgraph of the whole computational graph, which can be evaluated at any time. A simple and neat abstraction indeed.

Those properties combined make TensorFlow the most engineer/practitioner friendly choice in the market. If AWS hopes to compete with TensorFlow in all seriousness, they need to catch up with support on those seeming trivial but important details.

eva1984··on MXNet – Deep Learning Framework of Choice at AWS
> we have concluded that MXNet is the most scalable framework

Without back by any benchmarks? This claim is lazy.

eva1984··on Keyframes: Delivering scalable, high-quality animations to mobile clients
My reaction exactly...JSON seems a horrible choice to encode numeric data. Protobuf will be much better.
eva1984··on Why does it take so long for us to form our first memory?
First memory when I was about 1.5 years old, where my family, specifically the man who I now called father is having a dinner.
eva1984··on Alien life could be so advanced it becomes indistinguishable from physics
This is pure speculation, or fiction. What is the real meat here?
eva1984··on Facebook Must Really Suck At Machine Learning
Whitelist or blacklist or assigning PageRank to websites are tempting but also controversial because it will fall under the accusation of censorship. Take the below link as an example:

http://www.breitbart.com/2016-presidential-race/2016/10/16/m...

This is not 'fake' news, in a literal sense, because it just says someone is about to release something about Clinton. But for some people, this news could simply be seen as an indictment. Can we claim it is fake in that sense? As I have said above, it is equally controversial to penalize such websites for editorialization, because find story out of non-story is how most news agencies makes money and they have incentive to do this. Blame modern media and journalism for this.

In the end, using one simple algorithm to battle this is kinda of naive, not because it won't work for simple cases, but it fails to cover corner cases. In such scenario, human judgement is still crucial.

eva1984··on Facebook Must Really Suck At Machine Learning
No. Google is fooled by fake news too.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/googles-top-search-result-for-fi...

I have some problem with those claims that offer little to none details. Use the above link as an example, how do we teach machine to verify this news? First, we need to teach them to formulate a question, in this case, 'Who has a larger number of popular vote [as of now]?', then it needs to find its way to verify the number from reliable sources, possibly need to struggle between conflicted sources as well.

This is no trivial, if we solve this, we might as well solve the problem of understanding human language as a whole.

The mentioning of Princeton students' Hackthon project is really offbeat, if the author really bothers to look into what that project actually is, nothing more than an API mashup.

https://github.com/anantdgoel/HackPrincetonF16/blob/master/b...

Disclaimer: I worked for a major news app, and the effort to battle fake news or low quality non-trustworthy news is ever growing. While application of machine learning is promising, human, especially experienced human is still the real workhorse for this problem

Edit: Typo.

eva1984··on Found in translation: More accurate, fluent sentences in Google Translate
I mean the quality of the translation is good...but not that good for deep understanding. It is good enough for informational messages, like news stuff, but for things like reading a paper/textbook, where sometimes you need to spend hours to read certain section repeatedly in order to fully understand the meaning behind, this thing is far from being good enough to be useful.
eva1984··on Google joins .NET Foundation as Samsung brings .NET support to Tizen
Nothing can replace Java for android, unless it can also replace all the libraries current Android application is replying, which is the reason why I believe Google isn't going to switch off Java anytime soon.
eva1984··on Google’s top news link for ‘final election results’ is a fake news site
Fake news is a hard business. Even human cannot tell whether it is true or not, if without intensive fact checking.
